Duke Game Survival Guide and Game Thread

The fact that the mid-week game against UVA was postponed this week has only added to the anticipation for tip off at Cameron tomorrow.   It’s hard not to get carried away.

The Terps have been cruising and Duke looks vulnerable (aka frighteningly unathletic); but we need to be realistic.  Here are six tips to get you through the game:

    1.  Expect a loss and be thrilled with a win

    2.  Expect one of our starters to pick up two fouls before the first TV timeout.  Officials just can’t handle the pressure of calling a fair game at Cameron.  They let the crowd dictate their decision making.

    3. Duke will shoot the three ball well.  They are at home. Don’t expect any different. The Terps need to turn their shooters into drivers and force the likes of Mason Plumlee and Greg Zoubek to beat them.

    4.  Terps won’t win with out a balanced attack.  It can’t just be Milbourne and Vasquez in double digits. Hayes will need to give us 2 to 4 threes and we need to pound it inside to J-Dub.  Gary will figure out a way to get the entire starting team involved.

    5.  Expect the broadcasters to gush about how great the Duke fans are.  If this happens go to the mute button, unless you want to hear about how “smart” they are and how they represent what’s great about college basketball.

    6.  Remember, this game is gravy.  We don’t need to win.  A loss here and then a sweep of the three games next week and the Terps are sitting pretty at 9-3.  If we win though, wow.  That would just be incredible.

I would never predict a loss on this site, especially against Duke; but I’m not predicting a win tomorrow either.  The Terps are better than the Blue Devils.  I truly believe that. There’s just an awful lot working against them when they go down to Durham.  The only thing that is for sure that I am really tired of waiting for tipoff.

Get it done, Terps. Get it done.

The games against Wisky and NoVa weren't even close (watch the replays), late buckets shaved the margin. Md was handled easily in those games - again they weren't even close.

Right you are, we had a 2 pt lead with 3 minutes left and ... guess what... we didn't score another fucking basket.

Bottom line, this team looked clearly outclassed today. Md has been hammered 7 of the last times against Duke.

And, again, UVA ain't half bad. We lost to 'em last yr, and they were far worse then.

    • Ricksterps
What Wheels said. Both our starting guards aren't very athletic and it was exposed today. You have to backdoor that overplaying defense and we didn't do it. We had a bad case of stone hands all day long as well.

GV cannot guard Scheyer. Not sure why we didn't put Mosley on him but what do I know. Our D was better in the second half but the damage was done at that point.

Not sure why all the anger when we knew a loss was most likely coming. It's our second bad game in the ACC this season. It happens guys, get past it.

We are flat out better than UVA. If we execute our offense we will win the game. I expect our seniors to lead us to a victory.

The dark side of the Soup has come out in full force today...

    • DiamondbackRuss
Mosley drew the assignent of guarding Singler.
    • Seneca3
"The dark side of the Soup has come out in full force today..."
      What?
I think these responses have been fairly even-keeled compared to other losses. Losing at Duke is almost to be expected, so its not that big a deal. Getting embarrassed two years in a row is not acceptable. It's a rivalry game that has become so one-sided its lost most of its luster.
We continue to show up small in big games, while crushing lesser opponents. We've yet to beat a real good basketball team. People come on here to vent their frustrations and most people have valid points. Go on a Carolina blog and read what these people are saying one year removed from a championship.
    • spmd
we lost to wisc and nova by 9 and cinci by 12. thats not getting crushed unless you and i have different standards on what a blowout is. "clemson couldn't throw the ball in the ocean, if they did we would have lost by 30 points" wtf is your point? if we didnt play crappy we couldve won. and we had the lead with 3 minutes left. and seriously lets bet on the uva game. i want free money if you're going to hand it out.
    • Wheels
Yeesh, people. I'm looking for 10-6. I don't care how they get there, just get there. The BooVa game now takes on paramount status. It's going to be an ugly game, and coming off of this thrashing, I worry about where this team's head will be.

This is where the seniors will have to step up. From the portions of the game that I did make myself watch, Landon was a no show. Eric played well for the first 5 minutes, and Grevis played well his last 5 minutes. MD is really unathletic, but we've known that since the start of the season. It's easy to overplay Greivis and Eric. It's easy to overplay I Seen Bowie because you can count on him to have stone hands. It's easy to overplay Cliff because he plays half of the game with his head somewhere else.

Can this team beat Dook at Comcast? I wouldn't count on it. That's why they need to get to 10 wins before that game. This season cannot come down to that last game.

Onto BooVa. Must win. Must win. Funky D and slowdown O...something MD hasn't played well against. This team must avoid losing streaks. They have a quick turnaround. If you're Gary, throw the Dook tape away. This week will define MD's season. Win 3 games this week, and punch your ticket. It starts with BooVa. Must win. Did I say that already? That this is a must win?
    • ChuckWoolery
I don't think JW got too worked. He's a frosh and will definitely improve. We clearly didn't box out. JWill didn't have his best game, but he's had a pretty good yr otherwise.

2nd half, I think GV said "fuck it"... and knew he had to take it upon himself to score.. otherwise the team wouldn't.
    • Seneca3
I don't blame Gary for this loss. We missed just about every open shot we took. JW got worked by Zoubek. Vasquez couldn't get it going until too late. This team needs Vasquez to get going early or we're in for an ugly game. Are we really surprised that we get raped on the boards when our tallest player is 6'8" and fat?

I don't care how bad we got beat today, I still think we can beat this Duke team. We won't shoot that bad again and the game will be called a little better. Seriously, I can't remember a worse foul call than Scheyer got on that 'and 1'. Thank God that we have that road win at UNCW to fall back on.
    • spmd
i guess this is the first game you've watched this season. we haven't been blasted by any team except dook. we're not mediocre. we will finish in the top 3 in the league. and if you'd like to bet on uva then just tell me how much.
    • ChuckWoolery
I've watched every game. I vividly recall it raining down 3's vs Villanova - they hit something like 20 3pts. Cincy manhandled us on the frontline, Wisky crushed us on the boards. Seems like you haven't watched much, period. Those games were effectively close to blowouts.

Fortunately, Clemson couldn't throw the ball in the ocean - if they could ... with our 25-30 TO's we should have lost by 30 pts. Apparently, you don't watch games... I do.

You're a fool, spmd, piss off.
    • ChuckWoolery
I'm not turning at all. I am saying this is a "mediocre" team.

When confronted with playing against top 25 teams, Md has folded like a tent.

Blasted by NoVa, Wisky, Cincy, etc. Md has looked especially bad.

Nobody came to play today, except GV.

So, keep your head in the sand if you wish -- I just can't dismiss this loss... especially with all the prep time Md had.

I wouldn't bet that Md will beat UVA, either.

    • spmd
its amazing how quickly are fans like chuck woolery turn. wow, md lost to a top 10 team on the road in a really tough environment and now we're trash? at home, duke has beaten wake by 20, fsu by 14, georgia tech by 19, bc by 20, clemson by 21 and now md by 21. big fucking deal. we're 6-3 in the league. if we beat uva and then ncst this game wont mean hardly a damn thing. some of our fans are the dumbest, most pathetic people in the world.
    • k_cali
It's amazing how quickly we crumble. That 9 minute span in the first half was just awful. We were completely taken out of our game and were literally just throwing the ball at the rim in a rush time and time again. GV wasn't that bad, they were trying to smother him and he actually did the right thing by giving up the ball, but couldn't guys get open, they were doubling him the entire time. And we have to be able to make SOME open shots. We got totally out coached, they had our number. Gary just could not get our guys to execute, you could see that he knew how to combat Dukes game plan, but our guys just didn't have the composure to settle down at all. Not the end of the world, but it would have been nice to have a better showing on national TV
    • ChuckWoolery

      Gerry,

This team IS mediocre. A good team that has TIME to prepare doesn't get hammered. Perhaps they may lose, but not get ass raped.

Duke is NOT known for it's front line. Yet, we get destroyed by Zoubek. Wake up, GERRY. A physical team like, say Syracuse, with a good front line would wipe the floor with Md IF MD makes the NCAA's.

By the way Gerry, MD is 6-3 and NOT 7-3. Better wake up quick, or Md will by 6-4.

Bottom line, at least for me, is that as USUAL when Md has a big time game, they get blown out.

Truly embarrasing for all Md fans and especially alums.
    • Slope
Gerry, it's like this. "We" can call ourselves muh-fuccas BUT no one outside the Terp family can do it. I can call my brother an idiot but no one else can.

That being said, I still think we can get to the second weekend. As much as I've trashed him but Vasquez has been a totally different AND better player since the Wake game. However, Milbourne has to be a running mate and go hard!! Can't disappear like today. He has to have his "gimme the damn ball" moments.
    • No one but Vasquez made a jumper in the second half. Not an observation, but a fact. Not a single person made a single jumper in the entire second half besides Vasquez.

One positive from this game: Duke has no answer for Greivis. None. Vasquez decided he couldn't rely on his teammates for a stretch (and he couldn't) and scored 9 unanswered. They couldn't do anything against him
    • GERRY
I hope our fans rember that Puke guard who just layed it in when both team were
in the customary end of game lock down.

      That's another mufa fucca.

Chuck, Chuck, Chuck.....Woolery. Losing hurts but please don't steal our hope and aspirations. This team is a lot of things but calling the 7-3 terps (2nd place in ACC)
      mediocre....is just not right.

Tell us how you really feel?

    • LJT98
Out rebounded. Out hustled. Out shot. Out classed.
I'm embarrassed to be a MD fan right now. 6 days to prepare..... and THIS!

For 7+ years now this team has done this to me. As soon as I'm about to drink the Kool-Aid the Terps smack the cup out of my hand.

I didn't expect to win, but I expected more heart.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Well that debacle is over. Out played and out coached. We just got RAILED. Better get their minds right for UVa
    • chiterp
Guys, please calm down. It ain't like Duke has not been blown out before (Duke was blowwn out by G'Town the other day). We played bad but these things happen. We still have another opportunity to beat 'em.
    • ChuckWoolery

Losing like this with all the time to prep reflects that this REALLY is a "mediocre" team at best. Terps would get abused by a real team like Syracuse etc. C'mon we are getting ass raped by Zoubek, LOL!

For all those bong smokers that thought this team could reach the Sweet Sixteen, WRONG.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Terps only had one extra day to prepare for Duke. The UVa game was cancelled the day b4 the game was to be played. But we clearly had no answer for their bigs, starting with Zoubeck who also had a "career" game against us in Durham last year.

My question is since Duke isn't the only team with several bigs over 6-foot 9 in their line-up, why didn't those other teams do this to the Terps? We just got outplayed & outcoached today. End of story. Deal with it and move on.
    • GERRY
Now take Scheyer for example....he's a true muf'a fucca.

He throws up crap and it oozes down the backboard into the bucket
    • GERRY
      Slope....that's more like it
    • LJT98
      No answer for Zoubek. Really?
    • Slope
Gerry, you know hurts? When we can't make shots. We don't have a lot of size for the paint and mno off the bounce quickness. But we run good sets and have lots of wide open shots. But we gotta knock 'em down!!
    • GERRY
Slope- Denigrating your own team players is less of a "right".....it's stupid.
    • ChuckWoolery

GETTING schooled by Greg FUCKING Zoubek.

WOW. He's more a stiff than Mike Mardesich, and has 16pts 17 boards. Our front line is pathetic.

Let's start hearing the apologists excuses about this game.

    • GERRY
Don't know what hurts most....the 3's or the uncontested putbacks.
    • Slope
      lol...have that "right"
    • Slope
Class of '84 here, baby. I'm old school. I have that to call us muh-fuccas!!!
    • jonbruns
where was that foul on Scheyer? I thought it was a walk. These refs suck ass. Fuck them all.
    • eddienj
That's bullshit. Phantom call for Scheyer.
    • GERRY
      FInally made a 3....that's 378 consecutive games.

We may well lose this game but we are beginning to see that we CAN beat Duke
      at Comcast.

Hey....we have no Muf; fuka's on our team.
    • DiamondbackRuss
We CAN beat Duke at Comcast? Really? We've shown today that we have no clue, no clue what to do with Duke's bigs.
    • ChuckWoolery
      Too little, too late.

What a fucking lame pathetic effort.

As usual, when pressed Hayes looks like a slow MoFo. He is only a catch and shoot player, exposed again today.
    • eddienj
I gotta give Dino an A for effort. F for skills but definitely an A for effort. He tried to dunk while he was under the basket. Then he tried to follow-up dunk when he didn't even have the ball. Dino's heart is there. The body just won't follow.
    • eddienj
over the back call on Zoubek? amazing
    • Slope
      That muh-fucca missed a wide open 3!!!!!!!!
    • eddienj
GV taking over. He has continued to find teammates for open shots and no one has delivered.
    • GERRY
Just when you caught the dagger GV is there to pull it out with 7 straight pts.
    • Rizzo
Is anybody else with me? I was SO looking forward to the game...scheduled my workout and lunch accordingly...and I have to suffer through this. I don't care if we play well and lose...but this is not even any fun. I liken it to all those blowout Super Bowls...so much anticipation and then, ??????
    • ChuckWoolery
Maryland is clearly a 2nd tier team. Any big game, we get blasted. Sad to say, but it's a fact. We get crushed by Duke, NoVa, a now mediocre Cincy team. Let's play Miami again so everyone can get back to hittin' the bong thinking this team is something it's not.

The ONLY thing missing from this debacle is that GV didn't run his yap.
    • DiamondbackRuss
No quotes from Greivis prior to this game because Gary didn't allow the press access to the players on the day before the game.
    • GERRY
Let me answer my own questions and we have been talking about this for 4 years.
Duke is geting WAO shots we aren't.

Ready for this? Their guards can get open, ours have to "be open". It's painfully
      apparent.

TO's killing us. We are full of "bullet holes".

We live to play another day
    • chiterp
i dont even mind that we lose this game, but how we lose is also important
    • Terpfan
Not going to win many road games shooting the ball like this and playing this kind of defense its that simple, especially at Duke. we are getting outplayed, hard to watch this after a week off.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Okay, this one is over don't let it ruin wuts left of your weekend. Wait..is that a Padge sighting?
    • Rizzo
Awesome! We got the lead down to 14...

OOPS..before I could finish the post, it's back up to 20...

We cannot hit a shot to save our life.
    • ChuckWoolery

      What a fucking embarrassment.
    • chiterp
      we have not made a 3 today....crazy!
    • DiamondbackRuss
Greivis made a 3-point shot, our only one
    • chiterp
fuck nolan smith. i am so glad the game is not on espn...i could not handle hearing vitale's voice with this massacre going on. fuck zoubeck too.
    • aholla3
Having the UVA game on Monday will help us. Forget about this game immediately and go and get a W.
    • GERRY
We have no answer on the OFF boards. Zoubeck with another (no blockout) Layup.

...and another thing....Our shooters are out of position. Very few of our shots are front to the bucket.

Hate to say it....but good scouting by Puke....They have us out of our game.

It's about to be "what can we learn from this loss" time.

    • eddienj
I think Vasquez is playing pretty well, except for that dumb shot Gregg mentioned. He has found the open man consistently but we have missed WIDE-ASS OPEN SHOTS all day. Biggest culprits are Mosley and Milbourne.
    • Slope
They scouted us well. Overplay us on D. We have no off the bounce cats that. Bowie is the only one we have period.
    • GERRY
Ever notice how 80% of Duke shots are simply not contested? Are they really that
athletic or have they figured out our guys have heavy feet?
Time -Out.....Gary's pissed. As well he should be.....our guys are missing assignments
and GW's losing patience with them.

      Is it the Cameron Hex.WTF

    • JohnE
Ugh...more of the same to open the second half. Ugly...come on Terps, show something.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Great start to the 2nd half. Smh
    • GERRY
We all agree Duke kills us with the 3 but have you noticed they are WAO (wide ass open) 3's?

They move the ball around with passes. We dribble and dribble and dribble some more.

Gary really needs to teach our guys to block out. Ever notice how many unchallenged put-backs other teams make against us?

Gotta Luv JWill but WTF ....he's always trying to shoot (directly) under the hoop...he has no hook shot or reverse layup. He needs to find his spots and get there. Wouldn't it be nice to see JW get an alley-oop and dunk? He's going to be great but Duke is
exposing his weaknesses. Dino....completely outmatched and looks confused.

What do we have 24 pts. Get this -not sure of accuracy:

      Hayes (6), Tucker (7) GV(2) (AB (2)....19 of 24 points from guards.

    • DiamondbackRuss
Duke honoring alumni at half time, one of them...Lefty.

K's birthday, his 1,000th game, Lefty honored at the half=perfect storm

Meanwhile, I noticed that Duke has made 5 three's to Maryland's none and Duke has made 7 free throws while Maryland hasn't even attempted one. Otherwise Duke has only made 2 more FG's than the Terps.
    • jonbruns
Its not over yet. We deserve a crazy comeback against Duke. Get it to single digits at the ten minute mark.
    • moguls
Mosley missed at least 2 wide open 3's. Bummer.
    • Will
This ain't over yet. Keep shooting--we'll heat up and the threes will fall. We got some good looks, they just didn't fall. But Milbourne has to get more involved offensively.
    • ChuckWoolery
It's over, pal. Mark the tape.
    • ChuckWoolery
Well, thought this game would be different. Wow, getting embarrassed once again on Nat'l TV.

This one is OVER. Better play better Monday night, or the euphoria will yet again turn into that "Bubblicious" feeling.

This is fucking awful. This game is DONE. As usual, GV chokes when it's the big game.
    • Gregg
Okay, Gerry get ready to let me have it.

I am not blaming GV for this wretched first half. All are to blame. HOWEVER. GV set the tone of desperation with that awful 3 point attemtp off the backboard less than 3 minutes into the game. It's up to him, Hayes, and Milbourne to settle the team down early and not show frustration/desperation so the rest of the team can be confident.

Also, I didn't see anything, but Tucker must have blown some defensive assignments. Other than that there is no reason he should have been taken out of the game with the way he started. That drive and spin move was pretty damn sweet.
    • gbx79
      threes...

and Duke is playing tighter D.

Hate to think that its over at halftime, but that's a deep 16 pt hole.

      Go Terps.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Duke's transition defense has been bad. If they were getting out and defending in transition it would be a slaughter right now.
    • DiamondbackRuss
This will never happen but Gary should start Cliff in the 2nd half and sit Mosley down. Cliff is the only perimeter player that is scoring the basketball.
    • moguls
We are not playing well....but the officials are finishing us off. Bullcrap!m
    • Rob
Stop crying about the refs. We are being whipped by a much better team.
    • Gregg
We will always cry about the refs Rob because they they get bullied at Cameron every single game. It's a fact. But nobody was saying they are the reason we are down.
    • spmd
zoubek should have fouled out. i think he has one foul. 5 on 8 per usual in cameron
    • DiamondbackRuss
Last year we only scored 44 points at Duke. Given the way we played in the first half it will be a challenge to beat that this year.

      t
    • eddienj
Please bring in Padgett. I can't take anymore of this Dino Gregory.
    • Gregg
Isn't learning to cross-over dribble without dribbling it off your foot one of the first things you learn in grade school??
    • aholla3
How was that trip on Singler any different than the Zoubek trip on Vasquez to open up the game?
    • Gregg
We aren't doing ourselves any favors, but these officals make me sick.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Are u EFFING KIDDING ME? Singler tripped, wtf
    • eddienj
      Come on GV. Popcorn machine.
    • DiamondbackRuss
C'mon #Terps lets get this down to single digits by half-time and regroup in the locker room.
    • eddienj
Good point on Zoubek DBR. The reason we're not getting that call is because we're not going after the ball hard enough. If you jump hard then the over-the-back is more visible to the refs.
    • eddienj
Hayes was fouled on that fast break layup. Landon had position.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Cliff must have been tired. Can't think of one reason he shouldn't still be on the court right now.
    • DiamondbackRuss
I guess Lerch...errr Zoubeck doesn't commit over the back fouls?
    • JohnE
Not looking good guys. We need some points from somewhere.
    • GERRY
Not much you can say. Don't know why Dino gets PT in an up & down game. He's ok
      in the half court.
Getting killed on the offensive boards and the 3....as usual. Also settling for shots that
we don't normally take. It's our kind of game- fast paced but Puke is taking us to class.

Why can't we D up Singler? Zone?
    • DiamondbackRuss
Duke has completely taken Greivis out of the game for the 3rd game in a row. Smh
    • jonbruns
Get it to 8 at half. I would be happy with that.
    • Harry
They can't miss, this sux watching a blowout with 8 minutes left in the 1st half
    • JohnE
Nice move by CT. Answered by dook w/ two threes! Ugh
    • eddienj
I don't know what made Gary think Hayes and Vaszuez can off the floor at the same time. Bowie is gonna bring the ball up in this game?
    • DiamondbackRuss
Naw, Smith didn't travel when he received that pass.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Cliff Tucker is feeling it today.
    • Harry
      CLIFF ON FIRE
    • DiamondbackRuss
      OMG we scored
    • jonbruns
This is one of those games that I can't imagine how we will get a good shot. Nothing seems to be going right. Terrible.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Duke is overplaying on D and we don't have anyone who can beat their man off the dribble
    • eddienj
Everything is rushed. Even open shots are rushed. Composure please.
    • JohnE
      Ugly...ugh!
    • DiamondbackRuss
Is this 2010 or a re-broadcast of last year's game at Duke?
    • Terps_R_Us
Ugh, already turning into a disaster. Gotta turn this around quickly or we'll get blown out.
    • JohnE
Need to settle down on offense and get some good looks.
    • jonbruns
      Ugh. Not looking too hot.
    • Gregg
My 3 year old just yelled "What are you DOING!!!??" at the TV. He is wise an accurate.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Wow wut a brick. That coulda killed someone. C'mon #Terps. Let's get it going.
    • Gregg
Gotta hit those open shots (and layups)
    • DiamondbackRuss
Holy crap how'd Greivis get that pass to Mosley? Wow

Getting a bit nervous guys, but excited at the same time! I should do like Wheels and DVR, but can't seem to bring myself to it. Nice post Jeremy! I think you captured it a lot of salient points about us in Cameron. Man have we experienced all tha s__t over the years in that place.

Here's the quick & dirty on what I'll be looking for early on: 1) do the Terps have any D for the 3?; 2) somebody's got to play the man on D besides J-Dub, especially on Scheyer and Singler; and 3) we need the General to LEAD us to victory. Ok shimmy a time or two to rile up the crazies, but bring your A game GV and leave the reckless hoops stuff outside the arena.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Hopefully Greivis can get it going from the opening tip. We need him badly today. Last season, he was held to a combined 14 points in the two games against Duke. His inability to score against Duke's defense basically led to our doom.

Some Cameron Crazies give Greivis some respect http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/12/AR2010021203230.html

Anybody got a link to watch? I'm in Zurich.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Wow, it's Coach K's 63rd birthday AND his 1,000th game too. Yeesh. I guess the ACC scheduled Maryland for this occasion because we're not Duke's rival.
    • jonbruns
      cheer sheets. That is lame.
    • DiamondbackRuss
They've used cheer sheets for years. Lame or not lol. But what's not lame is what Utah State's students do. Check out the video at this link http://sarahjane72.blogspot.com/2009/12/why-i-love-aggie-basketball.html

Jerome Burney is in uniform and warming up with the team. Not sure if this is an "insurance" move by Gary to have a big available in case of foul trouble or if this is an "accounting" move that makes it possible for Rome to travel and stay in the team hotel on road games. I can't imagine he'd see any game time since he hasn't played since the UNC game in '09
    • PC
Win or lose, I'll be glad when this game is over.
    • DiamondbackRuss
LOL u chuggin Pepto or something? :)
    • gregwtmtno
God, I just hate duke so much. I want a big game from Jordan Williams. In my opinion, he's the biggest difference between this year's Terps and last year's.
    • jonbruns
I am getting more and more nervous the closer this game gets. FWIW, two of the three heads on ESPN College Game Day picked the Terps. Hubert and Bilas picked the Terps in a close one and Digger picked the Devils.
    • okaybowler
I'm so pumped for this game. Agreed, it makes me sick to my stomach, but couldnt imagine not watching it.

I had a dream last night that GV and JW were on the break. A defender comes at Grievis, who drops a between the legs pass to a streaking JDub, who thunders home a dunk and comes down with the rim in his hand and a glass shower.

      Odds of this happening?
    • jonbruns
That is a great dream. That would be epic.
    • GERRY
I know the feeling about watching some of "these" games. However, the anticipation
always gets the best of me. When we beat UNC, at UNC, on national TV, when they were # 1 and undefeated I actually had a "why bother" feeling before the game.

Who would have thought GV would get a triple double that game? Who thought Boom would have scraped the boards the way he did.

Booms final act in that game was falling to the floor after we won, covering his
      face with extremene emotion.

We all were exhausted. What a treat.

C'mon Wheels and Ricksterps....we need your karma and cheers. Lightening has been known to strike twice. Aren't we the TOP-25 Killers after all. This could be
      # 8.

A replay is never better than the real deal. Expect you to be tuned in unless your
on prozac or oxycodone or similar.

I'll be checking for your half time posts.

      GO TERPS- Be the One.

    • Ricksterps
I will DVR it myself but I will start watching it about 45 minutes in so I will catch up right at the end.

The kids should be loose for this one. It is a total gravy game. A win would be huge but a loss would probably still have our RPI go up.

The match-ups are going to be really fun to watch. LM against Singler and Mosley on Scheyer should be a real battle.

The seniors have one before in Cameron, winning two times is something most ACC players never experience.

      Go Terps
    • idkwid
I am happy enough with a close game. Before the season, nobody chalked this up as a win. I just want to know that we can compete with them in their home arena.

My main concern is fouls on JW and DG. If we can avoid that we are ok. It is now that I am sorry that JP did not get more pt in the ACC because it is in games like this that we will probably need him. It is the only coaching shortcoming of GW I see this year, to not have a fourth big man with experience ready for such slugfests.
    • Wheels
      Dear fellow Soupers:

I won't watch this game live. I will DVR it and check the score online. I just can't take these kinds of games. It MD wins or plays close, I'll watch the DVR. If it's a bad loss, I will delete it. Instead, Olympic luge for me. Less hazardous for me (not the lugers, unfortunately).

Go Terps...please Lord, I know we're not supposed to pray for one team to win and the other to lose because sports can't be about pray-offs...but can't you make an exception for this one? No one likes Dook, and I believe that extends to celestial beings, too. From Thor to Jupiter to modern God....they all hate Dook. It's a scientifically proven fact.
    • eddienj
Haha. I feel you. I know what you mean. But the agony is sometimes the best part. What insignificant thing in your life (it's just a basketball game in reality) can draw out so much emotion from you? The gut-wrenching, breaking of furniture, screaming at the top of your lungs, that's all good stuff. A precious two hours away from the real world. I can't even put a monetary value on it. I look forward to big Terps games more than I do a vacation (except vacations to Vegas).
    • eddienj
The trick to this game is how are we gonna D them up. Are we gonna protect the glass or protect the 3-pt arc? It's tricky. I would guess that Gary is gonna emphasize "no second shots" and depend on our guards to jump out at the shooters. This is the way to go. Dook shoots so well from the 3, especially at home. But there is nothing more demoralizing than playing defense for 25-30 seconds only to give up the rebound. My guess is that if Dook shoots over 40% from the arc, they will win. That is unless......

Our boys are patient and run crisp offensive sets with hard cuts and effective screens. We can score on Dook if we are patient. The composure has got to be there. "Chicken with its head cut-off" is the surest way to a blowout loss. Run the sets, protect the ball and wait for the high % shot. Milbourne and Hayes will have to contribute alot, even more than they normally do.

GV will handle the ball even more than most games. Dook will pressure from the half-court line and over-play passing lanes. GV is our only player capable of handling this. He needs to be a maestro and show alot of poise. If GV shows poise the rest of the team will follow.

Vegas lists Dook as a 10-pt favorite. I keep telling myself that this game is a "freebie". We are expected to lose, and a loss really doesn't hurt us. But if we win, well then the ACC title will be in our grasp. It's not a must-game but it's a great oppurtunity to put together a special season.

I know alot of people here have extreme hatred for Dook. I really envy you. I did not have the privilege of witnessing those golden years first hand. I was in College Park during the Bob Wade and the probation years. My senior year was the Walt Wizard year. I have lived in LA and NY ever since. I wish I could go back in time and have been there at Cole when Battier played for Dook, etc. One of my small regrets in life.

    • wow that is really sad.

IS this NCAA legal?, I hope

Juan's had a hard time staying healthy the last couple of years. Many athletes say it helps them recover from injuries faster. Meanwhile, I'm gonna pretend I never read this.
    • jonbruns
Yeah that makes sense. Doesn't really bother me to be honest. One would be hard pressed to argue that roids would help Juans game (other than recovering from injury). He has never been a huge banger, or big body. I can understand how roids would help power hitters in baseball, but a sweet jumper? Not so much.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Pe'Shon led Oak Hill w/ 19 points. Michael Gilchrist, of St. Patrick's, almost took over the game in the 3rd quarter. Here's the NJ Star-Ledger's write up of the game:
      http://highschoolsports.nj.com/news/article/2879894414942254576/oak-hill-va-79-st-patrick-78-high-school-boys-basketball-scores-and-results/

Oh, and St. Patrick's was banned from playing in the NJ state tournament because they were found guilty of starting practice before the mandated official first day of practice.

GO TERPS! Great opportunity for a statement/resume building road win! Let's Goooo Maryland!

I forced myself to watch the Puke - UNC game the other night. Two reasons. First I wanted to see UNC beat Puke. Didn't happen. Next, I wanted to see (speculate) how we would match up against them.

As Scheyer and Singler goes, so goes Duke. Yes, they have always killed us with the
3-ball and it's difficult to believe Scheyer (especially) gets the open looks. Some extra D on him could throw him off. Singler drives the lane and somehow never, ever
      picks up a "charge".

Duke moves the ball around very well. They don't do alot of dribbling (like we do). They are looking for the open man and if it ain't there they will take it to the hole to get some contact or a score. I thought they were fairly quick on their feet.

Tucker and Bowie have to "re-emerge". If we can get 7 pts from Bowie (I say 7 because he will always miss one end of a 2 shot foul) and 9-10 from Tucker
that might be huge. Dino with 6-7 points would help. That's 20+ pts from this trio and of course some decent D could be a game changer.

Agree with the foul situtuation. You just know 1 or 2 of our guys will foul out. We cannot afford to have GV pick up early fouls and Hayes has got to come through. He and Mosely cannot go "stealth" on us.

      Go Terps
    • mightyterps
i hope we come out strong and do not spend the whole game chasing the score. we will get drained just trying to catch up. i respect coach k he will have duke prepared.

OH THE HELL WITH IT LET'S KICK THEIR ASS
    • chiterp
      Well, well, well, well....f**k Duke, f**k Duke, f**k Duke, F**k Duke, f**k Duke, f**k Duke, f**k Duke, F**k Duke.

Need to get that outta my system before the game ends on saturday. Md v. Duke games always make me sick (whether we win or not)...and I am really really tired of how i get so nervous before Md v. Duke games. It actuakky makes no sense. I did not get sick on my wedding day...why does a MD v. Duke game do this to me????!!!!

F**k Duke. We may lose tomorrow and that will be okay since we are at Duke, they do play better at home, some of our guys lose it on the road...and blah blah blah....

If this game is close, I willl be happy but I just might pass out....I hope not. I don't drink when the sun is out but I just might make an exception for saturday.

I will say a silent prayer for GV, Hayes, Landon, Mosley & JW tonite....oh! and especially Bowie, Tucker, Dino & even Padgett. Maybe something miraculous happens 2morrow and we do to Duke what we did to UNC last year and 2 years ago and 3 years ago.

I think that just might make my year. Go Terps!

    • jonbruns
I agree ChiTerp. I am generally a even keel calm dude, but during Terps Bball games I am a lunatic. Not just Duke-Maryland either. During close games I feel sick to my stomach, I pace around, yell at the tv. Other than a few really disturbing games (Dkue "Gone in 60", Giving up a 20 point lead to Clemson") I am pretty good about moving on. I am usually in a bad mood for the rest of the day. That's all.
    • Gregg
We also don't have a chance unless the bench comes to play. Expecting foul trouble as many of you have already mentioned. Tucker and Bowie have to play smart and confident, or at least don't kill us when you are in there. With all the games in the next week, the bench playing well will really help our starters not get worn out.
    • Jacob
I'm expecting a UNC-esque game from Tucker. After his semi-lame outing versus the real UNC this year, he might have been saving it for UMD's highest ranked opponent of late.
    • Good to hear that about Pe'shon.

I forgot to mention that the Terps better be prepared to battle on the glass. duke leads the ACC in rebounding margin. Yikes.
    • Samster
Before I read Jeremy's post, I was going to say to look for Jordan Williams to have two fouls called on him in perhaps the first 90 seconds. Or maybe it will be Mosley.

The Duke team that looked pretty tame against UNC will not be the Duke that we get. I have seen them play at home and on the road, and they are way better at home.
I don't think they will miss Thomas because Mason Plumlee is coming around. He is not as great a defender, but is better offensively.

I am not expecting a win. I will just be glad if we keep it close. Gary is probably telling the guys that the game against UVA is more important, which it is, as you have to defend your homecourt.

One thing I have never understood about Cameron is how the students are allowed to be so close to the court.

I saw the last few minutes of Oak Hill's victory. The announcers were slobbering all over Duke's point guard recruit, Kyrie Irving. It was really sickening. He was very good, but so was Howard.
    • timb
    • Jacob
Wow so many big things going on in Durham for this game.
      1. 70th anniversary Cameron Indoor Stadium
      2. Coach K's Birthday
      3. Coach K's 1000 game coaching the Blue Devils.

      high "sentimental" stakes.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Like Gary said on his radio show a few days ago, until you don't see Thomas on the court expect him to play.
    • Terpfan
Agree with your points, the muting one especially lol because you know that scenario will likely happen multiple times tomorrow as the announcers will be drooling over the Duke players and fans. Im so pumped for this game and on a side note i have been watching this whole Oak Hill game to get a good look at Howard and he has exceeded my expectations. Watching this game really reinforces my beliefs in how the high school rating systems for players is not always a key factor when judging a player. Howard is simply better than a 3 star player, he has played great against a high high level of competition. he has hit some 3's and jumpers, shown the ability to drive to the basket and create, can handle the ball extremely well, and maybe most impressive are some of the passes he has made both in transition and in their half court sets off his own drives.

Maryland is getting one hell of a player that looks like he can certainly play either the 1 or 2. Not to mention he is a well well above average defender, both strong and quick. He looks like Mosley, just with much more offensive ability. He dropped about 20 tonight and was probably the most impressive player on the Oak hill team. I am real excited to see this kid in a terp uniform next season

If we play the Duke that showed up against UNC we smoke them by 15. Mark the tape.
