    Terps Eviscerate Tarheels

Maryland asked all the right questions today of the Tarheels.  The Terps dared UNC to beat our press. For the most part, they could not. We forced them to execute in the half court.  They could not.

It can be argued that UNC is “down” this year.  Whatever.  They start two seniors, both of whom were more highly recruited than any of the Maryland seniors.  This season defines the essence of the Williamses.  Gary is a great game coach who gets the most out of his talent.  Roy is a great recruiter who can’t beat a dead mule without superior talent.  Maybe the great recruiter will wind up with more Championships; but I’m with the great game coach.  When will the HOF realize that Gary’s bust needs to be installed in Springfield?

Before I digress, let’s get back to today’s game.  The seniors, Mibourne, Hayes, and Vasquez all played like seniors.  Vasquez was sublime.  He scored 26 points effortlessly and dished out dimes as if he was working at a cash register.  Eight games into the ACC season and he is the player of year.  There is no doubt.  No one means more to his team and the Terps are in a virtual tie for first place.  The discussion is over.  If Duke sweeps us (I almost bit my tongue off writing that), and Scheyer soundly outplays Vasquez while doing it; then he overtakes Greivis. Otherwise, Greivis is the POY.

Milbourne has redefined his game in the back half of the year.  He is a complete player. He has the best mid range jumper I’ve seen in years.  He can finish in traffic and he can rebound when it matters (see Florida State).  But his most impressive attribute has been his defense.  He blocks the shots of bigger men.  He is all over the place in the half court.  He’s been phenomenal.

When Eric Hayes is hot from deep, the Terps won’t lose this year.  It just won’t happen.  He adds an extra dimension to the offense that makes the Terps nearly impossible to stop.  If he is able to find his shot in March, we will go far. Mark the tape.

A new AP and Coaches Poll comes out on Monday.  Have the Terps earned a ranking?  I believe so.  16-6 overall and 6-2 in the ACC is impossible to ignore.  Apparently, we lack a signature win; but we don’t have a signature loss either (stop losing William and Mary!).  Personally, I think the RPI matters more. I’d like to see the Terps in the Top 20 heading into the dance.  That should give us a seeding with a good chance to get to the second weekend.

OK, I’m getting ahead of myself.  UVA comes to town on Wednesday and they are a solid team.  They have beaten many of the teams that we have and almost beat Wake the other night. UVA hates Maryland and won’t look past the Terps.

It would be insanity to think that Terps would get careless and start taking their success for granted. Gary knows UVA is dangerous and with the annual 5 vs. 8 (5 Dukies + 3 officials) coming up in Cameron on Saturday, we need a win.

The next eight games will be tougher than the previous eight, but we are in the right frame of mind and playing the best basketball of the year.  Bring on the UVAs, Dukes, and Techs.

Hey with the second heavy storm in just a few days, is UVa actually going to be able to make it to UMD for the game?
Maryland can request that the thousands of on-campus and close-to-campus students fill the arena, but it would all be for naught if the opposing team and the refs can't get here.

Also, I'm surprised there isn't more outlash from the students at the administration to continue the system where if a season-ticket holder doesn't show, then a student gets to fill their seat. As a recent grad, I was heartbroken when I wasn't picked in the lottery to attend even mid-ranked ACC teams. I would look around at the hundreds or even thousands of seats of the people who paid for the tickets who didn't show and wonder why those seats couldn't be filled with the individuals in the arena who actually make noise (no offense to those of us who stand and cheer the whole game and actually pay for tickets).
    • Wheels
BooVa left Cville this afternoon and are in CP already. The refs? Who knows.
    • mightyterps
wheels, good post. we need to settle down. a big game with va. very big we should not lose at home. I think i would be satisfied with 1 out of 2. Remember we just crapped on the floor against clemson. GW will get us right. But i hate these words. We did not play our game and were flat. Coach Bennett will defense us which could keep uva in the game and make it tough.
    • JohnE
I think everyone has put it very well, we need to take down BooVa this week! I believe there are a couple of shopworn cliches that fit this team quite well: 1) they have to take it a game at a time. We alum and fans can look ahead and speculate to our hearts content, but they cannot. The Terps need to approach each game like it is the only one that matters. Forget Duke for now, all that matters is BooVa; and 2) with this team, from everything I've been able to observe, the whole truly is greater than the sum of the parts. They need to do everything as a team. When they don't, they start to unravel with sloppy/reckless play and the other team usually makes runs at them which keeps the game close. I know what I have written sounds like hoops 101, but with this team it just seems to be particularly true, at least to me. Thoughts?
    • DiamondbackRuss
Oak Hill won tonight. Pe'Shon Howard was high scorer with 24 pts.
    • terpbugman
A compilation of where the Terps stand in various rankings:

      RPI: #44
KenPom: #8. Uses a measure of offensive and defensive efficiency. His rating shows that MD has been becoming more efficient in both offense and defense as time goes on.
Sagarin: #23. Uses average of two methodologies. MD came into the ACC season in the 50's in this rating and have only been going upward.
      USA Today: #32
      AP: #29
Lunardi's Bracketology: #8, playing UAB, opposite Gary's friend Boeheim and Syracuse at #1.

By my estimate, in order to have a good NCAA run, MD needs to finish with no worse than a 6th seed. If MD continues to play as they have and finish 11-5, I think that will be good for a #5 seed. 10-6 gets them a #6 to #8 seed. They have to keep the heat up.

Alright folks, it was mentioned once earlier, but we need to start pumping up GV for the Cousy Award. http://www.cousyaward.com/vote.php

You can vote once per email address per 24 hours. Current leaders are John Wall and that Asian Kid from Harvard.

If GV can toss floaters over ACC frontcourts and rack up assists with the supporting cast he's had at MD, then I think he has a chance to be a solid PG in the NBA. The only question is, will he get the chance. Post-Season accolades may put him in the spotlight. I agree that he wins ACC POY if the Terps win the conference. Why not tack on the Cousy award too for good measure?

As for the UVA game, it is huge for all the reasons mentioned above. Can't wait til Wednesday.

It was the snow storm that opened the doors of the castle to all of those redclad students. The shots of those souls trudging up to the Comcast Center in 3 feet of snow looked like Napoleon’s retreat from Moscow. Gary was very moved (as was I).
    • Great reference to 19th Century military history! Can we liken Greivis running the break to Patton's army marching through France? Not sure if that fits; but we need to come up with more of these.
    • cjazh
Not a history reference, but I think I'm going to start calling GV, El Nino. Right now he's the perfect storm. I have been highly critical of him in the past, but he has pulled it together and I'm ready to give him the credit he deserves.
    • aholla3
Found this on Testudotimes.com, about CJ Leslie:

I could see Leslie at the front of the Maryland press, flying around attacking on both ends of the floor. It could be tough to pull off but Maryland fits this kid’s game. My pick: Maryland

This is from Reggie Rankin, a recruiting analyst for ESPN. He isn't basing this on anything except where he thinks the player fits best as far as coach, play style, etc.
    • eddienj
That's cruel. You are getting me excited about this.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Sure would be fantastic if he came to UMD
    • terps96
I'm sorry to interrupt but I need to make one rant....against god. Why you ask? Because prior to this year I have missed going to maybe 3 MD bball home game in the past 8 years (that includes going to that dreadful NIT home game in 06). So far this year I've missed 4 games either because of getting sick, or because a freak blizzard. And with yet another freakin snow storm about to hit the area tomorrow I'm probably going to miss the UVA game. Of course I did manage to show up for the W&M game.....

Now back to how to how important this next home game is.
    • okaybowler
Yeah, and if you have any tickets to unload let me know!
    • Ricksterps
No offense '96 but with that record I hope you don't make another game all year :)
    • Harry
I agree with DBR, the UVA game is more important then Duke at Cameron (AKA Juan Dixon) Stadium. We will be hard pressed to beat Duke there, but UVA at home is a must win and a game we expect to win.
It's unbelievable that were getting another foot to 20" of snow for that game. I will be there with boots and trusty SUV.
    • cjazh
Another 20 of snow? Wow! It must be the global warming. Or El Nino. Or something.
    • cjazh
El Nino ... maybe that should be GV's new nickname.
    • Ricksterps
"We should never lose to BooVa in any sport."

Didn't you link the report where they outspend us in both revenue sports? I know money isn't everything but when they pay one assistant coach as much as we pay our entire staff it starts to matter.

UVA has gotten serious about winning. That new arena had A LOT to do with that. Seeing it half empty most nights was the motivating factor in the coaching change.
    • Wheels
Rick...come on...don't bother with me with facts that I have presented before here on The Soup. My loathing of BooVa knows no bounds. That should tell you how much I hate them. My hate blinds me to my own rationale.

Their stupid little traditions...On Grounds and Mr. Jefferson...and ripping off Auld Ain Zein...and their lame striped ties.

Every serious historian knows Thomas Jefferson was a bastard, a coward, and an instigator to murder. He also died thousands in debt because he spent money like Paris Hilton. He was a douche and so is the university he founded.

Did I mention that I hate Boo Va? Did I ever tell you the time I got so drunk in CVille that I walked the streets making the VT Hokie "gobble gobble" noise at every passerby?

      But I digress...
    • Ricksterps
      Now that's funny!

I remember when it was a real rivalry. It has been lost because they have sucked so hard. It's hard to have a rivalry when you never play games that have meaning to both sides. They have Tech anyway. Which has owned them in both sports by the way. Go look up those numbers, it's god awful.
    • idkwid
I hereby revoke your right of free speech, and your other various rights he insisted upon.
    • okaybowler
Ha! Wheels, as a student of the American Revolution, I despise TJ as well. Most over-rated founding father by far.

idkwid, the Constitution and Bill of Rights were drafted by Madison and Hamilton. TJ was in France.

Glad we can open up the soup to some high-minded historical debating.
    • Ricksterps
Not to mention he never stepped foot on the battlefield during the revolution. As governor of VA he basically gave the British Richmond and then Charlottesville along with the Virginia Assembly.

Not saying he wasn't bright but he was no hero.
    • idkwid
I didn't say he wrote it. I said he insisted on it. I am correct in that.
    • can you overrate founding fathers? Can you underrate them? If so, I'm going with Sam Adams. At this point, all most people know is that he brewed beer.

TJ did have a checkered personal life, but he was quite the rennaisance man. He invented the swivel chair! he wrote the Declaration of Independence too (pretty ballsy considering that was a death sentence if the US had lost).
    • Wheels
I hate BooVa almost as much as I hate Dook. We should never lose to BooVa in any sport. This upcoming game is massively important. 8 games to go...we gotta get to 10 wins. BooVa is the easiest of the lot with Dook, GT, and Clemson all coming to Comcast. The NCSt and VT games are must win road game. I don't want this season coming down to either the game at BooVa or the home game against Dook. I want it all settled by then.

And no more rankings for this team. They haven't learned to handle success yet. The ACC is down this year and not just because UNC is down. The more angry this team plays, the better.

First things first. Must win against BooVa.
    • Gregg
And congrats to GV for winning ACC player of the week. He truly deserved it.
    • PT
And it looks like some in the media are giving GV his deserved recognition...

      http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/s...
    • Gregg
I am thrilled by not being ranked for the reasons stated above. This team cannot think they have accomplished anything. And judging from their reaction in the lockeroom yesterday, I don't think they are falling into that trap.

The final 8 games are clearly tougher than the first 8 and we need to continue to play they way we have. We may not shoot 50% from 3 again, but the defense has been strong in almost every game we've played in the past 2 months. A great sign.
    • DiamondbackRuss
In some ways I feel the UVa game is more important than the game at Duke. We beat Virginia and we're 7-2 plus we put some distance between us and UVa. We lose the UVa game and the Duke game takes on a "must win" status to keep from losing two in a row and having the team's momentum come to a halt.

Many teams have gotten off to good starts and then faded down the stretch run. Hopefully the Terps are thinking of the eight games ahead of them and not the eight games behind them.

      GO TERPS! Keep on eviscerating!
    • okaybowler
Ricksterps, UVA was the bottom of the barrel during that period. Also, I'm not surprised and totally fine with MD not being ranked. We beat a bad UNC team that everyone else is beating. Beat BooVA and Dook, then we should see a nice little number by our name.

This UVA game is huge! We gotta win this to keep surging. A 'W' establishes us at the top of the conf. An 'L' muddles things further. I think Mosley shuts down Landesberg and we get the W.

And it looks like its gonna be another snow game. Hopefully, they pack the castle with students again.
    • Ricksterps
Not in either poll. Not shocking really. The only time you go from barely getting votes to ranked is at the beginning of the year. Not saying we don't belong because I think we do but it's just the way these things work.

      http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/rankings?pollId=1
    • Jacob
but idk, Ga Tech is ranked in the top 25 of kenpom and realtimerpi (which purport to be strictly numbers based rankings). In comparison to our own team, their national sportswriters ranking seems a bit inflated, but across the entire country their ranking seems to be pretty on par. If anything the Terps are underrated. I'm glad it is that way, though, since they always manage to lose when they are ranked.
    • idkwid
i think ga tech is vastly overranked
    • eddienj
Also didn't help that most of the teams ranked 18 to 30 had good weeks. Cornell dropped out without even losing.
    • Ricksterps
One thing about the UVA game. I keep reading on this site that UVA has our number. We have lost more than we should since they haven't been that good but I wouldn't say they have our number.

We are 6-4 against them the past five seasons. I guarantee our record against UM or Clemson, just to name two, is way worse than that.

UVA will be a challenge but we should beat them playing at home. They will play some in-your-face defense so we better be ready to bump and grind.
    • talaya7
Congrats to GW & the boys for the great!

One really neat hustle stat that hasn't been pointed out yet - the team rebounding was impressive. Check out the box. No one had more than 6 boards, but everyone had 3, 4, and 5. The Terp were scrapping for every possession. Well done.
    • waynef43
Eviserate - to take out the entrails of: disembowel.

Great choice of verbs. I think you pretty much nailed it.

Nice highlight video of J-Will yesterday, love him running the break...

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGj1cKZXc2E
    • Jacob
Wow! he really was truckin to get that bucket. I wonder whether the guards from UNC along side him really knew what was coming. There isn't much way that he beats them down the court in a dead sprint - although he kept pace with our guard (GV). I wonder what his 40 is.
    • Seriously, how'd you do that? I didn't know you could embed files in the comments. I wonder if we can upload pics too?
    • NYMets9631
Hey Jeremy, I'm actually not completely sure lol. I went to the site to post and just copy and pasted the link like you would normally do. Next thing I knew, I came back to the site and it was embedded like that. I'm not sure if it's a new feature or what lol
    • BaduEarlStar
He was MOVIN' on that break. I dig the embedded video, BTW. Is that a new Turtle-soup feature or have I just not noticed it before?
    • DiamondbackRuss
I would love it if Greivis got ACC POY, but methinks he'd have to lead us to a deeper NCAAT run than Duke or Schyerface will get it instead. Hey, it's the ACC. Like Gary suggested in his post game presser the ACC may figure out a way to make us play UNC again in the regular season LOL
    • aholla3
ACC POY is given out before the NCAA Tournament starts, btw. So, I think its gonna come down to whichever team wins the regular season title. If Maryland wins, I dont see how they can't give it to Grievis.
    • idkwid
But do they announce ACC player of the year before the NCAA tournament?
    • PT
That has to be the most fun I've had watching a MD game in a long time. I was in awe...so much so that my wife asked me why I wasn't more excited when she saw the score. I guess I was a bit speechless. It probably had something to do with the atmosphere as well. Even on T.V. you could tell just how crazy it was in there. Must have been great for all those students who were let in.

The thing I loved most about this game was that no one played poorly. Not everyone had eye popping moments, sure, but they all contributed. The defense was solid, they moved the ball well on offense, rebounded and just got after it. The bench gave a spark with points. The ability of the team to absorb the UNC runs and counter with their own was fantastic. Like some have said, that's another way this team and players have grown. They didn't panic.

Hayes had 16 points on 6 shot attempts. Crazy. I just couldn't stop laughing about it.

Mosley? Where did that elevation come from? I like it.

I can't say enough about Jordan Williams and how much he's impressed. Gminski called it best when he said "They can measure his improvement by the game, not by the year." That says it all. The kid is developing right in front of us, in ACC conference games no less. It's a shame LM, Hayes & GV can't stick around for another year to continue playing with him.

Sounds like the guys are taking the right attitude toward what's coming. No sign (in their comments at least) of looking past any games.
    • idkwid
Gminski is the only Dookie I ever liked, a class guy, a regular guy, never fit the snotty uppity Duke mold
    • DiamondbackRuss
      Wut about Jay Bilas?
    • idkwid
didn't he commit a cheap foul (not called of course) in the last seconds of a close ACC championship game? Wasn't it against Bias? Didn't it mark tHe outcome of the game?I
    • eddienj
Gminski, Bilas, Feinstein. Dookies allowed at Comcast without the threat of physical harm.
    • eddienj
Funny quote from a UNC blog:

"I knew this was going to be a down year by Carolina standards, but I never thought the Heels would be in danger of missing the Dance. This game is reminiscent of the Kris Lang days. Lord have mercy on us all."
    • Ricksterps
Down year by Carolina standards? They are 2-6 in the conference and 13-10 overall.

      That's a down year by anyone's standard.
    • seanjames
well, yeah. that's why he's comparing what he thought it would be (a down year by carolina standards) to what it is (a down year by anyone's standards)
    • eddienj
You hit some very good points Jeremy. I definitely agree with your point about Eric Hayes. When he's hot we can play with anyone.

Landon has the best mid-range jumper seen in College Park since Juan.

When GV does win ACC POY he will say that the locker room after the OT loss to Wake was the turning point.

Guys, don't be so impressed with Roy Williams' recruiting abilities. He has coached at Kansas and UNC. If those two schools don't recruit themselves I don't know who does. I think I can bring in Top 5 recruiting classes at UNC every season. The fact is he is an average in-game coach at best. This is a guy who couldn't go to the Final Four as a #1 seed with Paul Pierce and Raef LaFrentz. If Gary had done that, some Terps fans would want him put in jail.

No sense in overlooking UVA. The game at Duke is likely a loss anyway. We must take care of business at home then go to Cameron with a "freeroll".

6-2 in the ACC is surprising but not because of the record. If you told me 6-2 after the W&M game, I wouldn't have believed it. If you told me 6-2 before the season I would've believed it. But if you showed me the actual scores of the games I would have said that's crazy.

This team has made a believer out of me. I loved reading the post-game quotes from the team. "Just another win" and "Lots of work left to do" was the overwhelming consensus. You know what's scary? These guys have raised the expectation level in two short weeks. Now the object is not can we get in, it's how far can we go?
    • chiterp
GW needs to give Padgett more minutes (unless Padgett is stinking it up in practice). The less time he plays this year, the less prepared he is for next year. It's the same shit that happened to Landon between is freshman year and sophomore year.

Otherwise, great game. If we play like this on Wednesday, we will beat UVA. Why is the National press not giving us respect? I expect us to be a top 25 team this week.
    • Wheels
I don't want to throw cold water on the parade here, but this team has no margin of error. They have put themselves into a very nice position heading down the stretch, but this has to play every game with the highest level of intensity possible. They cannot coast because they don't have the elite talent to coast.

This BooVa game will be the toughest of the year. How many times over the past 4 years has BooVa absolutely put daggers into the hearts of all of Terpdom? They've beaten us in Comcast and in Cville. They are going to play tough D and slowdown O. This is not a good match up for MD. It's a bad clash of styles.

MD can run or play halfcourt but MD wins when they dictate pace, not the other way around. BooVa has quick guards and good 3 point shooters (at least they always seem to be against MD). There can be no letdown at all. MD needs to come out on Wednesday night and let it all rip. The fans need to get in there and rock it out.

This season can be special but the margin is so slim. Again, no expectations. They could win or lose all 8 of these remaining games. I'd be happy with a 4-4 split. 10-6 is where this team needs to be. Anything more is gravy. Anything less is bubble.

Great game today. I hope the kids enjoy it. But Monday is not Sunday.

Just saw this in the box score...26 assists! That is team basketball right there.
    • Ricksterps
LM has improved his game so much he may have a shot at the NBA. He is so strong and that jumper is unreal. The only thing I can see as a weakness is his handle. Still a little shaky putting the ball on the floor.

Padge plays too fast right now. It is very common with freshmen big men. You can just see the clock counting down in his head as soon as he touches the rock.

That is what makes JW's year so impressive. He plays so damn smooth. Just can't say enough about his level of maturity this season.

A final note on the Williams' comparison. When we beat them last year I had a conversation with an UNC alum after the game. I said "No way Roy wins that game with the same talent Gary had. He responded "Granted, but no way Roy would HAVE that level of talent."
    • Jacob
Ahh, the old Chicken or Egg quandry.
    • NYMets9631
From ESPN's weekly watch on other contenders for team of the week:

Maryland: Won at Florida State, came home to "Snowmageddon" and blitzed North Carolina on Sunday at the Comcast Center. Maryland and Duke atop the ACC. Is this the early 2000s again? Where are Juan Dixon and Jay Williams on the court for these two?
    • BaduEarlStar
      "Jay" Williams....That makes me laugh.
    • Gregg
I've said it all year.... 10-6 gets us in no worries. This is an exciting team and they need to keep this up and we should have no problems. There will be losses and some frustrations like what we saw at Clemson, but we have mostly been consistent and if they continue to play that way, there will be no sweating on Selection Sunday.

Great effort by the entire team on Sunday. It was a pleasure to watch.
    • terpbugman
I agree, 10-6 definitely gets us in --- no questions asked. Not only that, the way MD is winning matters as well. In the 4 ACC wins outside of Fl St, MD is winning by an average margin of 21 points. And they beat Fl St by 4 and 9. And in their two losses --- both on the road --- they lost by a total of 9 points.

If they keep up what they're doing, no way they're out of the Big Dance at 10-6, 11-5 or 12-4.

And by the way, let's applaud how JWill is growing up fast. The announcers yesterday stated he's not growing by the year --- he's growing by the week. The opposition has been under-estimating him, to their detriment.
    • tommyg4
Great post Jeremy, I share your excitement and optimism.

Roy Williams is a great coach, just look at his resume. His coaching and recruiting abilities are undeniable, Gary does have Roy's number but I'd credit that to Gary's uncanny ability as a big-game coach. Speaking of big games, I looked at the remaining schedule and the games get progressively bigger.
We host UVA next, a team that I think could give us fits. We have to protect our house on Wednesday if we want a manageable situation down the stretch. We don't want to have to win every game down the stretch and some ACC tourney games in order to get on the inside of the bubble.
As Jeremy said, the UVA win is important because we go down Tobacco Road on a road trip to Duke and NC State next. We have to win at NC State because a winless road trip wouldn't look good. Winning at Duke is gunna be tough. Although we have superior guard play and favorable match-ups, they are always lights out from home. They've shot 50% from the field and 44% from beyond the arc at Cameron this year. It would be an awesome win for the resume if Greivis can actually make it "Comcast South."
Then we come home for Ga. Tech and Clemson, two tough teams, but usually vulnerable on the road. Gotta win those two games. Revenge on the Tigers would be oh so sweet because they've been a thorn in the Terps' side late in the season. Not to mention we had our ugliest offensive performance at LittleJohn earlier this season and could have won that game.
Our last three games are gigantic. 2 of our last 3 are on the road, the lone home game is Duke. The road games are at UVA and Va. Tech. Once again, two tough but winnable games. It depends upon which Terps show up. March 3rd, Duke comes to Comcast, mark your calenders. A "W" would give us a win to hang our hat on come Selection Sunday. Oh yeah, it'll be senior night for Grevis, Eric and Landon. The house will be absolutely rockin' for ESPN. A win would be incredible.
Winning 5 out of our last 8 would put us at 11-5 in the ACC, and I don't think an 11-5 team has ever been held out of the Tourney. 4 of 8 would give us 20 wins, a supposed benchmark for the bubble, but there are a lot of teams on the bubble this year. If one of those four wins isn't Duke then we could very well be left on the outside looking in at 10-6 in the ACC. It depends on a lot on how other teams perform down the stretch. I hope the Terps are one of the teams that are seen as playing their best basketball in February and March. The committee likes hot teams.
5 of 8 isn't too much to ask for, right? If they can build on confidence from some of these blowouts Gary and the boys can make a run at the ACC Regular Season Title. It's on the seniors to step up for their last games as a Terps. Hopefully the seniors' very last game is in the NCAA Tournament. Fasten your seat-belts, Terps fans.
