Huge Victory, But We Need Another

Sorry for the delay in a write-up. I figured Jeremy would be chomping at the bit to praise the boys for last night’s gutsy win, but his work schedule is too much, and I have Friday’s off, so there you go. You all get another post game write up from me. I know, contain your excitement.

So here we go. From reading the posts as the game was going on, I know most of you were with me sweating, living, and dying with every possession in the 2nd half. I have loved reading the breakdowns of the game and the performances of certain players and all made great points. Here is how I saw the game.

This was truly a gut check game. The Terps of the past few years did not win games like this, especially on the road. We had our moments in the past 2 years, like beating UNC a couple of times, but in most close games, we were not able to pull out a win. That is what concerned me after Sunday’s loss to Clemson. However, that is what made last night such a big win. Yes, it was a road victory and yes, we got a sweep of FSU and it helps our RPI, but this senior-laden team had to experience a close win like this to take that next step.

Like I have in previous game write-ups, let’s go down the line and talk about each player.

Vasquez - I still don’t like when he drives into the lane and tries to make a tough pass amongst the trees when he is only 5 feet from the basket. However, if a couple of plays like that are my only problem, then GV played very well. He took some bad shots, but that’s him. He will do that, but for the most part, he did what your best player had to do and that’s run the offense and hit big shots when you needed them. He is almost impossible to stop when he drives and hits those runners off the glass. Those final 2 buckets in the last couple of minutes were huge. He ended up with 23, 7 reb, and 7 assists. Very good performance with a bunch of morons yelling offensive things all night. He kept his cool and led the team.

Eric Hayes - The broadcasters had it right when they said the ‘old’ Eric Hayes would not have driven to the basket after missing 2 wide open 3’s early in the game. He has built confidence in himself and that allowed him to get hot in the 2nd half and hit 2 big time 3’s, plus calmly drilling 2 free throws in the final minutes.

Sean Mosley - You didn’t see much from Mosley in this one on the offensive end and we’ll need him to help out in that department come Sunday, but he grabbed 4 rebounds, had 3 assists and 2 steals and played pretty good defense as Singleton shot 1-7 and was in foul trouble most of the 2nd half. He is more valuable than stats say.

Landon Milbourne - He was back after a no-show on Sunday. Milbourne may not be able to hit a layup, but he is drilling those mid-range jumpers with so much confidence. His offensive rebound with the game tied late was perhaps the biggest play of the year. FSU had all the momentum, and no doubt would have probably taken the lead, but Milbourne flew in there and kept us alive. He was pretty damn good in this one and hopefully that carries over till Sunday.

Jordan Williams – Wow. This guy is a freshman. Let nobody give Gary any crap for recruiting after bringing this guy in. He has truly been the reason we are 5-2 in the conference right now. His ability to defend bigger men has allowed our defense to play like one of the best in the country. Like with our team in general, his offense may still be a little inconsistent, but when you play defense (and rebound) like that you will always have a chance to win. JW dunking the ball with confidence shows another step for a guy who will be a superstar very soon.

Dino Gregory – Who knew this guy was shooting so well from the line!! It would be nice for him to be more aggressive and get to the line instead of settling for those short jumpers, but this game will always be remembered for ‘The Charge’. You usually do not get calls like that on the road, but give those officials credit. They made the gutsy call and it was correct. Dino could have gone for a block or something, but he took one for the team. Look, Dino plays because of his defense. He is not your starter and that’s perfect. I have no problem with Dino getting good minutes because he will rarely make a bad play on the defensive end.

Bench - Padgett got in there and looked a bit lost during his one minute, but any time in there helps his development. I don’t have a problem in how Gary is giving out the minutes right now. Tucker did not play in the 2nd half (if memory serves). He has not shown the confidence in the past 2 games and Gary can probably get a feel on how he’s going to play pretty quickly. Tucker has a mental issue that has plagued him for years now. When he gets going, he is great, but when he struggles, then tries to make up for hit with some ridiculous attempt at a steal that not only lets his man get a free drive to the basket, but also gets JW to commit a foul that could have been really costly, it’s not right to have him out there. As for Bowie, he is really lost right now. He threw up 2 air balls and didn’t pay attention to the defender with a wide open layup that also could have cost us the game. I do have a fear for next year, but if JW can come in and play well as a freshman, then perhaps one of next year’s freshman can do it as well if Bowie and Tucker can not get the job done. The seniors will get the chance, I’m sure, but they will have to fend off the young guys.

Coaching – Last night was another example of Gary Williams out coaching his opponent. After another sloppy first half, he made the necessary adjustments and his players followed the plan. To slow the game down and use patience was a perfect foil for what FSU wanted to do. You aren’t always going to get patience with college players, but for the most part they did what they were told and it worked.

So now we have a very dangerous opponent to look forward to. Carolina has been pretty bad in the past few weeks and they are ripe to get beat again. But they are a desperate team and we need to match that desperation or yesterday’s win means nothing. To get through the first half of the league schedule at 6-2 would be so huge considering the tough games that are coming in the 2nd half. To beat UNC is essential and we will have the home crowd. Well, at least the students will be there. I know the weather will be an issue for the rest of the crowd, but it’s really important that they don’t take Carolina lightly and come out and jump all over those guys. The Tar Heels will have had a rough travel schedule and if we get an early lead, they just might quit. Keeping them in the game just gives them life and a hope they can pull one out in the end.

I am proud of last night and very much enjoyed reading about it and talking about it, but now that’s in the past and UNC is waiting. Gotta get those guys too.

Statement from UMD on the game can be read here http://www.umterps.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel...

Campus parking lots and sidewalks are still snow covered but crews are working to clear them as best as they can with almost 3 feet of snow and less than 24 hours to do the job. My best guess...and it is just that a guess...is that finding parking is going to be a mess for the UNC game.

As for those who are able to make it to Comcast Center, it appears that when people are let into the arena, they will be told to fill any seat that they want and that they can stay in those seats unless the ticket holder shows up.

All students with ID are encouraged to come to the game. For some reason I've got this image in my mind of 10,000 people at the game and 9,000 of them being students. And yet, Comcast will be louder than its ever been.

Oh and according to Jeff Barker's Twitter page, UNC was finally able to practice. "We got the Comcast Center all to ourselves except for Gary (Williams) who I hear is sleeping here."
    • sam
so it just so happens that i was visiting my family in college park this weekend and now i am stuck here. does anyone know that as an alumni if i can attend the game. would love to be at comcastle, especially if other alums can't make it. we gotta represent loud against unc!
    • GERRY
Duke beats BC by 3 pts. BC pulled to within a pt with 15 sec.

Just think of what could have been?

It's beginning to be a slugfest atop the ladder.

      Go Terps
    • DiamondbackRuss
Dare to dream BC...dare to dream.
    • DiamondbackRuss
      Wake beat Virginia today
    • mightyterps
a question about xtra stdents at the game. we got tickets and plan to go if possible. we are about 50 miles away. how can md just load up on the students if they don't know what seats will be unused?
    • DiamondbackRuss
Very good question. Not sure how it works but they did something similar in '03 for a game against Clemson. Check umterps.com there may be info there, or call the Comcast box office.
    • NYMets9631
Game is on tomorrow, students will be allowed in who don't have tickets, and looks like Gary is sleeping at comcast lol

      http://voices.washingtonpost.com/terrapins-insi...
    • DiamondbackRuss
That was smart on Gary's part given where I'm told he lives, getting back n forth would be treacherous at best.
    • PT
      Hahaha. Awesome.
    • Wheels
Yow and her underlings, including Ralph and Sasha, should all go dorm to dorm tomorrow. Mote lives on campus, too. Get him in the dorms. We need a huge turnout in Comcast. It's UNC....it's a big deal no matter their record.

BTW...Gtown pasting Nova...doesn't help MD's RPI, even if the NCAA doesn't weight the RPI as much as it used to.
    • idkwid
closest court to the UNC hotel is High Point High gym. do they practice there?
If the can get to Comcast to practice, we should be the good host and give them time.
We are still below the Mason Dixon Line and should practice some southern hospitality, and be gentleme about this. ANd ACC coaches should remain on good tems woth each other and nopt start feuds over such issues as access to apractice court.
    • DiamondbackRuss
They'd have to make arrangements with PG Public Schools & High Point to practice there. And it is right up the hill. Although I'd be pissed if that happened since it's my Alma Mater. GO EAGLES!

I believe that UNC practiced yesterday in the Comcast auxillary gym so they had access.
    • idkwid
maybe i was somewhat of your neighbor of a while 1976-1982 I lived in Maryland Farms
    • DiamondbackRuss
Terps are at practice now then will head to their hotel. UMD or perhaps Gary will probably have some official statement on the ticket situation for the game. By 2moro the Students will prolly have cabin fever and a game will be something good for them.

ACC policy dictates that a game must be played if both teams and the game officials can make it to the arena.

I just hope the players stay focused. I'm sure they're aware of the Wizards game being PPD and UNC not being able to get their team bus out of the parking lot to practice. So I hope the kids don't start thinking that they might not play 2moro. Gotta stay focused and expect to play.
    • JohnE
DBR, if they don't play tomorrow, any idea when it will be rescheduled?
    • idkwid
the hotel should be able to plow a path through the lot for them. UMD can send one of their own busses to pick them up. UMS can ask MD SHA to plow the state roads to the campus. UMD should do everything they can to assist them in getting to practice and to the game. I am pretty sure this game will happen, the question more is about access to practice.

Chiterp - Yeah I am a GV Fan . I luv the terps, he's our best player and sometimes he
needs a little "D" from the Soupers too. I wouldn't say I am a "gung ho GV fan" but am sure others on this site share your view of my GV posts.. I'd be the same if SM, JW or EH was taking crap from their own fan base. I got on GV's bandwagon because some of you were jumping off.

Of late, the Soupers seem to be congruent on GV i.e, we ain't winning sh.t without him. Was glad to see the responses here on FSU's racists daggers at GV.

Re his "shimmy and swagger"- If others (fans/teams) don't like it,
that's their problem and nothing we say will change it.

I used to hate the "chest thumping terps" like Chris McCray and even DJ.
Make the bucket or block and get back on D.

Every game is HUGE and our guys need to see the rare opportunity this year in the ACC. It's up for grabs and shame on our guys if they don't see it and sieze it.
    • Ricksterps
It seems like we get on a roll and beat either Duke or UNC for a few years. We were beating Duke all the time and not UNC so much. Now we seem to have UNC's number but haven't done much against Duke.

We still have, by far, the best record against those two over the last 10 years.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Judging by these photos the Tar Heels are staying at the Sheraton in Beltsville, Maryland
4095 Powder Mill Road (301) 937-4422. Do wut you want with that info LOL

Around 20 inches of snow there http://twitpic.com/11p8pe http://twitpic.com/11p8ti
    • DiamondbackRuss
Terps have a chance to beat UNC for the 4th time in four years. That doesn't happen often.

Great win the other night! Like Jeremy said, "huge win, need another;" and I'd add and another and another and another...witnessed the NCST game in person, however I've been relying on the Soup to fill me in on the games since then. Here's the themes I'm picking up for the Terps to successfully complete their ACC regular season: 1) must develop/maintan strong team defense anchored by JWill and Sean Mosley; 2) GV must lead and raise the level of the games of his supporting cast; GV it is now time to be not only the man in general (pun inteneded), but THE MAN for and to your teammates; 3) LM-EH combo must emerge as a consistently strong scoring compliment to GV, no team can do it w/ just one scorer; 4) the role players need to consistently give us something every game--Dino, CT, and yes you Mr. Adrian Bowie. We need ya kid, come on give us something we can hang our hats on; and 5) GW is going to have to coach the hell out of this team. GW we need you now more than ever to focus them and get rid of the spells of low hoops IQ that sink us here and there, especially in key road games (i.e Clemson and Wake). My take guys, additional thoughts?
    • idkwid
waht more can i say, you put it very well. as far as the point production of the FS game, some player had difficulties, but a great FS defensive effort took us out of our game plan, but yet, we dealt with it and still won. that is very important for a successful team, find other ways than the usual ways to win, when faced wth dificult obstacles.

how big are these next 2 home games? We need to get both of these and we will be in great shape. I am especially worried about tomorrow just because UNC is still UNC. I hope I am wrong tho, we can do this! Go Terps!
    • markmax33
little do the other teams know that the more they taunght the Grevis The Great, it just inspires him. Let's keep it our little secret...
    • mightyterps
I too feel this could be a danger time for us. After watching the clemson game, we can look horrible when a couple things break down. We are not talented enough to dominate by just showing up. We all know that. I worry about all the games, and unfortunately we can play badly at times. We cannot get very high,[ the players i mean ]. The last thing i want to hear is we played flat because we probably took them too lightly.
    • Gregg
I hear you Wheels, but don't compare the Terps support of GV to Bonds (a cheater and not a team player) and Vick (a convicted felon).

You bet your ass we'd hate him if he played for another team, but it's okay to like and support a player on your favorite team and still admit he can be arrogant and a hot dog. I accept Vasquez for what he is. He is our best player, a guy who tries so hard every night (sometimes too hard), yet can't always control his emotions. For hockey fans, it's like being a Dale Hunter fan. You don't ignore the fact that he was known for throwing some cheap shots, but he is a good player on your team and you support him for what he is.
    • Wheels
Uhg...I wasn't saying that Greivis is like those guys or that MD fans blindly support cheating felons. My point is that there's a double standard that many on here won't cop to. At least you acknowledge it. He is our best player and one of the best in college hoops, but he can be an arrogant prick. When he goes out of his way to incite boos, I think he crosses the line. And here's the thing about karma...it's a boomerang bitch.

Cue Gerry. In all caps and quotes. Uhg...
    • chiterp
Oh please...I am not a gong ho Vazquez fan like Gerry, but I am sorry, there is nothing wrong with accepting Vazquez even with his flaws. Dude is 23 for heaven's sake. He's got flare. But for all the shimmys in the world and the late 3s, he does not deserve to be treated the way FSU fans treated him. Yes, we hate on Scheyer & Reddick (just like other fans hate on Vazquez) but we don't resort to racist tactics when hating on Scheyer & Reddick. That is the point here.

I get that you don't like it when Vaz gets arrogant (and hell, he knows how to talk himself into trouble...in many ways deserve the taunts), but he did not deserve what happened in FSU. It is not a double standard. I don't recall MD fans resorting to racist tactics when dealing with Scheyer.

      Geez.
    • Ricksterps
Wow, Wheels with the strong post. I went to similar territory with the GV to Reddick comparison. What's the difference between GV shimmying and Reddick with the lame three finger salute after made 3 pts? Answer is nothing.

Yea, I hope the students come strong on Sunday. Down here, the UNC players are wondering if UMD can perform against UNC when the Terps are suppose to win. We have won the past few years but we had nothing to lose and everything to gain. Now it is almost reversed. UNC loses this game and they are toast. We don't want to be the springboard for their NCAA tourney run.
    • Wheels
That everyone else in the ACC hates Greivis like we all hate every Dook star should tell you something. Just because he's on our team doesn't make it right. That kind of relativism is bullshit. San Fran Giants fans took the same attitude about Bonds, and Philly fans take the same attitude about Vick. That whole "he's a bum but he's our bum" stuff. We all have spent years howling about players like Laettner, Battier, Wojo, Collins, Reddick, Paulus, and Scheyer. We didn't hate them because they were good. He hated their arrogance. ACC fans don't hate Greivis because he's good. They hate him for his arrogance. It amazes me how so many people will accept the double standard. At least call it like it is. There's a line between swagger and douche, and sometimes Greivis crosses that line into douchey.

That said, FSU fans should be ashamed of themselves for taking it to the flat out racist level they took it to. Hate Greivis for being arrogant. Fine. But why go the racist route? Maybe DBR was right when noted earlier that FSU fans aren't too original. Given the large hispanic population in the state and it's commercial interests in South America, maybe someone in the state of Florida should say something about this. You know, I can't imagine how anyone might confuse the state of Florida with Florida State University.

UNC is a wounded animal. They lose to BooVa and VT in a week. They are 2-5 in conference play. If anyone on MD's team thinks that UNC is going to come out flat, they should have their scholarship revoked. If Debbie Yow gets wind that Comcast might not be filled to capacity for the game, she better get every student on campus at that game to fill the area. I don't care if she has to go to the dorms. There are 17k people on that campus. Get them in Comcast. That place has to go nuts. MD has to jump on UNC early and beat them down from the get go. Don't let them hang around and gain confidence. 6-2 at the turn...so much better than 5-3.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Good point on the hatred directed towards Greivis by opposing fans. The FSU fan base hates Greivis for a far different reason than their hatred of say...Tim Teabow.
    • looper
Well, I think FSU fans should be moaning about the charge. Dino was late to step in (the guy was already in the air as Dino got his feet set) and at that point in the game a call like that makes or breaks your team. Looked like a block to me. JMHO...

Dino needs to slow/calm down out there. I think he could really help this team on both ends of the floor if he could manage to get his mind right. Thinking a couple steps ahead would help him make decisions when the time comes. He seems to have three different ideas each time he touches it, does half of one and partially commits to the other two. When he gets the ball, makes a move, and takes a shot he actually looks pretty good. Boy we could use a confident Dino Gregory.

Got to give a ton of props to Greivis for this one. He could have gone off the deep end with the atmosphere like it was. To his credit, he played like he always does. Maybe with MORE poise! Nice work pro!

What's wrong with Mosely? He's not getting open looks. I think that has a lot to do with better defensive teams than those that he had his big games against. Also, it's due to his role in the offense. He's not getting those cuts to the FT line for open looks and he's almost always on the passing end of an offensive play. I'd like to see Gary try to get him back in the flow by running a few more plays for him. The guy was dead eye for a while and we need the marksman back.

Love ya Jordan! His progression has been amazing to watch. The kid making prep school post moves early this season has turned into a beast who grabs rebounds like an osprey snags fish! He goes through people to get boards that he has no business getting. Nice to finally have a guy that rebounds with TWO HANDS!!! Yippee! I'm not sure his post game has improved all that much, but his decision making in there certainly has. He's beating bigger guys with finesse and hustle. The moves will come with time but he's really good now. This is scary for our opponents.

Worried about UNC for sure. I know they're down but it's UNC. Probably THE best program in the country. I think Gary runs circles around Huckleberry Hound when it comes to in game coaching so we've got the advantage there but with players at the talent level that UNC gets, they are (almost) always dangerous.
    • ecg
Love to see GV shimmy while the Dookies cry...that would be justice.
    • terpbugman
Can we all agree with this: If JWill continues to improve as he has the last 2 games, and we shoot at least reasonably and keep down turnovers, the only team that will be able to stay with MD is Duke, if even them.

JWill has been a beast and outplayed both Booker and Alabi --- no easy task!
    • aholla3
I wouldn't stay that Duke will be the only team to "stay" with Maryland, but theyre the only team in the ACC that really scares me.
    • chiterp
I read the FSU blogs too...some of the funniest shit I have read this year. I think I had a case of Schadenfreud. Whatever; I really could not take my eyes off the >500 posts on their game thread. I know that we don't like Scheyer here in Terp land, but damn, they really really hate Vasquez, more than we ever hated Reddick or Scheyer. So he shimmys...who gives a damn? Apparently, they do.

I think it was a great thing that we won that game (given the fans' behavior)...especially the way we won it. I agree with Vaz; they deserve to lose that game for the fans' extreme asshole-iness.
    • what's the link?
    • chiterp
    • aroc
I have been reading a FSU blog. Several people were really moaning about the charge call. There was also a thread talking about Vazques where someone inserted a loop of Vazquez doing the shimmy. It would be nice to have links to the other ACC teams blogs, there always interesting to read. I would love to hear other's lists of the best team blogs.
    • Hearing what FSU fans were chanting disgusts me. What kind of person gets enjoyment chanting slurs like that? I'm normally against curtailing free speech; but how can a university allow such outright racist invective to be uttered by its students? FSU should be ashamed for allowing that behavior.

The irony is that FSU has at least two foreign born players on their roster (Alabi and Dulkies)
    • DiamondbackRuss
Perhaps some students at this particular southern school got the wrong idea from the white out. Just sayin :)
    • Ricksterps
      http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/college/...

Well the Heels are on campus so the game should definitely be played. I assume the officials took early flights as well.

We are going to be at a bit of a disadvantage since the snow will keep attendance way down. Let's hope our boys will bring the intensity no matter how many people show.

Was anyone able to catch the Montverde HS game on ESPNU at 5pm featuring Palsson? If so would love to read some thoughts. I missed it and hope it will be replayed. Honestly, I'm not expecting much on the offensive end...mainly because in talking to some players for The Rock HS they tell me there are some guys at Montverde that dominate the ball. Leading me to belive Palsson gets few touches.
    • turtlepin67
I watched parts of the game. I only saw him take one shot (a miss), but he looked good on defense, double-teamming on the press. He appeared athletic and coordinated. However, he did pick up four fouls.
    • markmax33
      replay on espn360 i'm sure...
    • chiterp
Amongst other things, the Vaz said the following:

"The fans here were crazy, the craziest I’ve ever had since N.C. State,” Vasquez said. “They were being racist, they were talking about deporting me and sending me back home, calling me Mexican when I’m Venezuelan. It was pretty bad, so they deserved to lose. That’s why they lost. I showed up like I showed up, like I’m the best player on the court and they have to take it like that.”

LOL! That's my boy. I certainly get his frustration. Back when I was 23, if somebody was calling me such names while I was trying to give a presentation, I certainly would have lost my shit.
    • johnnyrhodesscholar
Fire 'em up Gerry. Definitely a gutsy performance. FSU has a great frontcourt and Landon and JWill dominated the game, with a little help from the guards of course. How many times did we block Alabi?? After he dominated the last game against us even with his foul trouble, I was worried. But the boys and Gary stepped it up. I won't give Dino any shit the rest of the year as long as he keeps taking charges and hitting free throws, but as a team we gotta have JWill in there if we want to get rebounds. Now I'm just hoping the metro is running on Sunday afternoon and I can find a cheap ticket to the game. It's a long walk to CP from Silver Spring, but gotta keep that momentum going some how. I'm ready for the Cliff Tucker show...but unlike last year, we don't need it if we play with confidence.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Let's hope the kids can keep it movin...keep doin' that wurkk.

Meanwhile the DC area weather is playing havoc with people's plans. If that includes you please do the prudent thing and stay safe. Recruits that were planning to visit for the UNC game are not solidified due to Snopocalypse 2010. Will update you as I learn more over the weekend.

GO TERPS! Beat the snot out of the Tar Heels it's the game I look forward to the most.
    • GERRY
Real good post from Gregg which is what Soupers expect.

Let's not lose sight of two major facts:

      # 1 The ACC regular season title is up for grabs.
      # 2 We are less than 10 points from being undefeated.
There's no one on this site that would have predicted that. Can you imagine had we
won the WF game. Man....there would have been some awfully tight sphincter muscles in this league.

I luv the point made "Let's not let UNC off the mat"

And, another thing....anyone and I mean anyone on this site that gives GV some crap
the rest of this season ..... may living hell rain down on you. I don't care if he has 29 points of 10-30 shooting. We ain't sh.t without him.

The kid endured "deportation" and "your mother cleans my house" BS. Ya'll need to come to his D because you are going to be looking at his jersey in the rafter for a long time.

It ain't time to circle the wagons it's time to get behind this team and cheer them on.
They have given us lots to shout about.

Surely we want UNC's ass in the Comcast rafters. We'd be better off with a W againsst them but the big W is DOOK and don't you foreget it. Beating DOOK is
      the "cadilac win" we need.

      At ease ! Dismissed.

      Go Terps

You are right about Duke, but we have to put a beat down on UNC. I was at the game a couple of year ago when we beat UNC by about 40 ... love to see that again, in their powder puff blue uni's.

I like your thoughts...especially about GV...i am embarrassed for those fsu fans. The amount of enjoyment these guys have provided has been great! Duke is our rival and we can beat em.

Despite his lack of stats, I actually think this was Dino's best game of the year. When he was in for JW, it was like we were not noticably losing any efficiency on defense. Dino really didn't do much of anything wrong.

It's tough to win on the road when the home team is also controlling the tempo of the game. FS played the style of game that they think is to their best advantage, and we still has the maturity and patience to beat them at their own style of play. They want to pound us inside, and we stood up to them thanks to JW, LM and Dino.

Tucker might have played terribly the last two games, but his favorite shade of blue will be at Comcast on Sunday. I expect a bounce back game for him! Plus, we need more than 3 pts total from our bench.
