    Terps ACC Season Preview: Finale

The final installment of this entirely-too-long series has arrived. The three remaining teams on the schedule are Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, and the Dookies.

I had an entirely different intro written and ready to go before the Clemson game happened, but it really doesn’t seem appropriate anymore. Instead I’ll say that no one other than Gary Williams and the players, and perhaps not even them, know who the Terps are. Are they the team that walloped BC, Longwood, NC State and Miami in consecutive games? Are they the team that collapsed from top to bottom against Clemson when the pressure kicked up a notch?

Then of course there’s the scary possibility that we all know exactly who the Terps are. They can beat teams worse than they are, and lose to better, more athletic teams. There’s a chance that there is actually no gray area, the Terps just don’t have that next level to play against the elite, or the level below elite, and come out on top. We, as fans, refuse to accept this as a possibility because of the Terps’ illustrious history, Hall of Fame coach and star player. We know that the Terps should achieve bigger and better things than they have of late. We just haven’t seen it come to fruition on the court.

I remain cautiously optimistic. This team is so well coached and has such strong leaders that I don’t believe we’ve seen the peak of this team. I think we’re still capable of taking anyone down, and I think the FSU game and UNC games, while not signature wins, will prove that the Terps can win must-wins.

The end of the ACC is definitely the toughest part of the schedule. Which is good. As the guys play more, I think they’ll get better and better and do more of the things I’ve already praised them for. Georgia Tech and Duke are two of the best teams in the conference, and Virginia Tech isn’t a joke anymore. We can definitely beat all three of these teams, and here’s how:

Georgia Tech (Home on Feb. 20)

Breakdown: First of all, I’m psyched that our only game against these guys is at home. We have such a good home court advantage, which can make a world of difference when one of the team’s best players is a freshman. By this time, the ACC race will really have taken shape, and hopefully the Terps will be at or near the top. Comcast is going to be nuts for the remainder of the season, and opponents are going to absolutely hate playing there.

Georgia Tech has a three-headed monster of very talented players: Gani Lawal, Iman Shumpert and Derrick Favors. Lawal is their leader and their best player, but not their most talented. That would be Favors, a 6’10”, 246 lb. beast of a freshman. He’s already had three double-doubles in ACC play, and is kind of a matchup nightmare because of his height and his athleticism. We haven’t faced anyone like him yet this year. Tracy Smith is athletic, but shorter than Jordan Williams. Alabi is tall, but not incredibly athletic. He’s a scary player.

Luckily, he’s not without flaws. He shoots under 60 percent from the line, so fouling him, while not what we want, won’t kill us unless it’s Williams who’s doing it. He has no outside game to speak of, so we won’t need to try to put Dino on him to prevent the deep ball. Williams is also just a freshman, and he’s been fearsome on defense in recent games. Although I think Favors will hurt us, he won’t kill us. Jordan can handle him. He just needs to box out, move his feet, and try to force Favors out of position and into difficult shots.

The Terps may have more trouble controlling Favors’ frontcourt counterpart, Gani Lawal. If they can manage that, they’ll have a great chance to win. In the Yellow Jackets’ five losses, Lawal only averages a little over 10 points. In their wins, he’s averaging 16.5 points. If they stop Lawal, and the Terps will stop the Yellow Jackets. Lawal also averages 9 boards a game, and doesn’t shoot outside. He’s 6’9”, so he’s bigger than everyone not named Jordan Williams on the Terps. Milbourne’s going to be on him to start the game, and he and Dino Gregory will switch off depending if Williams is on the court or not. The Terps’ interior D will either win or lose the game for them.

That’s a good thing, I think. Against NC State, they couldn’t do anything in the middle. Williams was everywhere, Milbourne was helping masterfully, and even though Tracy Smith got 18 and 10, the Terps absolutely dominated the inside. They will need a performance as good, if not better, to beat GT. I think we’ll see it, and Greivis and The Guards (50s doo-wop group name?) can take care of the offense for the most part. With Sean Mosley’s pinpoint accuracy (4th in the ACC in FG percentage. Who would have thought that after last year?), Greivis’ newfound maturity and always-there creating ability, Hayes’ shooting, Bowie’s driving, and Tucker’s energy, we should give the weak GT backcourt headaches.

The Jackets, like many ACC teams (including the next on this list), are not a good outside shooting team. Their big men don’t shoot it, so their team .359 rate from behind the arc isn’t brought down at all by big men who jack it up too much, à la Rasheed Wallace. However, their starting guards, led by Iman Shumpert (who’s vastly overrated and has an “early Vasquez” type assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.24:1. For a point guard, that’s awful. He also shoots 33 percent from deep, and chucks up almost three and a half of those likely bricks per game. Good for the Terps, bad for his teammates and his coach.

One guy the Terps will need to look out for from behind the arc is Brian Oliver. He only averages about 15 minutes a game but leads the team in three pointers made and attempted, and shoots it from deep over 40 percent. He’s a 6’6” freshman, and he’ll probably see a good dose of Mosley and Tucker on defense. Remember C.J. Harris in the Wake game? Well Oliver isn’t as good as Harris, but he could have that type of an impact in Comcast if the Terps aren’t aware of wherever he is at all times.

I think the Terps take this game by around 6. Close, but not too close. Gary will have the boys ready as always, and I think our great defense will shut down their frontcourt and our great backcourt offense will lead the way on that end of the floor. A win in this game would be monumental because it’s a quality win, and in the last 10 games, which tournament officials count as its own category.

Virginia Tech (Away on Feb. 27)

Breakdown: Virginia Tech always seems to be a better-than-mediocre bubble team. They haven’t been bad in recent years, but they’ve never been all that good. They’re 3-3 in the ACC, having split with Miami, beating UVA (in Charlottesville) and BC but losing to UNC and FSU. In short, beating the teams you expect them to beat and losing to the better teams.

The Hokies live and die with their leader, Malcolm Delaney, the ACC’s leading scorer at almost 20 a game, more than 22 against ACC opponents. He’s a 6’3” junior from Baltimore, so you can bet he and Sean Mosley are well acquainted. I think Greivis will guard him a lot, but if you see Mosley on him, watch that matchup because I think it’ll be as entertaining a one-on-one matchup as we’ve seen this year.

Delaney can kill teams in a number of ways. He’s not the greatest shooter from deep (only .339 this year, which is lower than each of his previous seasons), but his numbers have been hurt by a recent cold streak he’s been on, which includes going 0-11 in his last two games and 2-20 in his last four. By the time the Hokies host the Terps, I don’t expect that trend to be ongoing. He can also distribute, and averages 4.2 dimes a game.

Probably the scariest thing about Delaney to me is his performance in the Hokies’ biggest games: 27 points in that overtime win over UVA, 28 in their win over Miami, 27 when they beat Penn State, 31 in knocking off Georgia (which looks like a better win with each passing week), and 32 in a tough loss to Temple. On February 27, you can bet that the Hokies are going to consider Maryland a must-win game, and Delaney will come to play. The Terps had better be ready for him, because he’s going to be a load.

If Mosley’s on Delaney, I have supreme confidence in whatever defense Gary draws up besides the two. Although Greivis has gotten exponentially better defensively this year (and if you haven’t noticed that you need to pay more attention to defense), He hasn’t seen anyone like Delaney, and the Terps need to draw up a game plan to help him. That’ll probably include a lot of Landon Milbourne double-teams when he penetrates, and a lot of Hayes and Mosley switching off picks. Defensive rotation will be key because Delaney knows how to find guys off double teams.

I’ll stop prattling on about Delaney. In reality, there are only two other guys on Tech who can really hurt teams. I realize that I got it totally wrong against Clemson by not even mentioning Jerai Grant, who dropped a double-double on us with a few ferocious blocks, but I honestly think that there are only three dangerous guys on the Virginia Tech roster. One I’ve already talked at length about, the other two are Dorenzo Hudson and Jeff Allen.

Both Hudson and Allen average in double figures (13.5 and 11.2 PPG respectively), neither shoot very well from long range (.316 and .286), but the similarities stop there. Hudson is a 6’5” slasher on the wing, and doesn’t do much but score and play defense. He doesn’t force turnovers but he usually guards the opponents’ best perimeter threat. He averages just over 2 assists a game, so he’s not a distributor, averages fewer than 4 rebounds a game, so he’s not a Sean Mosley-type banger inside either. He’s simply an above-average perimeter player.

Jeff Allen is a different type of player. He’s 6’7” but plays like a bigger guy. He averages 7.6 boards a game, but also 2 steals and a block per game. He’s basically a Landon Milbourne-type guy with a worse jumper but more athleticism. He’s not a particularly good shooter, and shoots under 70 percent from the stripe. He’ll be an easy guy to lock down because he’s not capable of overpowering any of our big men, but he’s a solid complementary piece to Delaney and I expect him to reach his average in points but only grab around four of five boards because of Williams’ ever-improving box-out ability.

As you may have guessed, I predict the Terps to take this game. It won’t be as easy as it was going up to BC and demolishing the Eagles, but it won’t be very difficult either. Going to Blacksburg for a basketball game is a far different endeavor than going there for a football game, both on the field and in the stands. They don’t have the home court advantage of a Duke, a Clemson, or a North Carolina. We’re also just a better team.  I think we win by 9 and break 80 again.

Duke (Away on Feb. 13, Home on March 3)

Breakdown: I would say that this is the one you’ve all been waiting for, but the more I think about it, the more I realize how little I need to break down this matchup. If the Soupers, and all Maryland fans, look ahead to one game on the schedule it’s the matchup with the Dookies. That being said, I’ll try to keep this much more succinct than my previous previews because I’m really preaching to the choir.

You guys all know about Scheyer Face. He’s turned himself from laughing stock of the college basketball community to legitimate All-America candidate. I still don’t know how he’s managed to do this, because I watch him and I can’t help but think that I could totally take him in a game of one-on-one. How he puts up a line of 18.7 PPG, 3.4 RPG and 5.6 APG is astounding to me, because it would appear he is void of any athleticism in his 6’5, 190 lb. spindly frame. Appearances would be deceiving, however, because he’s consistently performing well against top-flight teams. Not incredibly, not exceptionally, but he’s doing well. I think he’ll present problems for us because he’ll probably be shooting three-pointers in high volumes, against which, in case you haven’t heard, we tend to struggle.

One other addition to my incredulity over Scheyer: he’s incredibly efficient. He has a 3.3:1 assist-to-turnover ratio, which is stratospheric. He shoots 39 percent from beyond the arc, which isn’t incredible, but he takes so many shots that it’s still a very positive impact on his team when he launches it. Oh, and he shoots over 90 percent from the stripe. Every good thing he does reminds me of every other annoying Duke star over the years (well, really just Redick and Battier)(and I’m no longer annoyed by Battier, because he plays for my Rockets, but even when I was 10 he annoyed me in blue and white).

There are two other monsters who roam the hardwood in Durham: Nolan Smith and Kyle Singler. Smith also averages north of 18 a game, and he’s Duke’s #1 perimeter defender. He’s very good at it too. I’m not sure if he’ll be on Vasquez or not because he’s a little undersized (6’2”) while Scheyer is more of a height matchup with GV. Smith also has been an absolute dead-eye shooter this year, hitting his threes at an absurd .465 clip. This looks like an outlying stat to me, however, as he hasn’t shot better than .386 in either of his previous seasons (last year was .346). I think that’ll come down, but he’s definitely dangerous. Like Scheyer, Smith also hits the gimmes: he’s shooting a clean 80% from the line. In other words, the guards can shoot from anywhere, and they do it a lot and that’s how they get their offense.

The third member of their little three-headed monster is probably the guy with the most talent, but least production: Kyle Singler. Singler, not unlike our own Landon Milbourne, is probably more equipped to play on the wing. However, because of Duke’s own size issues, he’s been forced to move inside, and has performed admirably there. This year his numbers have decreased marginally from last year pretty much across the board, but that could be attributed to Scheyer’s meteoric rise to relevance. He’s improved since ACC play began, however, highlighted by dropping 21 and 15 on Wake Forest in mid-January. He and Milbourne will see a whole lot of each other (fitting, huh), and I’m not nervous about that matchup. In their three games against each other last year (and you’ll remember those two guarded each other then two), Singler only scored 11, 13 and 14; all three below his season average of 16.7. This year he’s averaging 16.2, but Landon’s playing much better and he has Jordan Williams helping him out. I would be mildly surprised but not shocked if Singler fails to reach double digits.

When Maryland’s on offense is where the trouble happens for me. Although logic would dictate that either Smith or Scheyer would guard Vasquez, after the way Tanner Smith handled Vasquez in the Clemson game, I’d expect Coach K to stick 6’8” SF Lance Thomas on GV to really try and give him problems. The sad thing about this plan is that it will probably work. Historically, Greivis struggles mightily when picking on someone his own size, and if Thomas is on him, don’t be surprised if GV throws up a clunker.

Unlike last year, however, our team doesn’t die if Greivis isn’t himself. Mosley and Milbourne are more potent offensive forces, Williams can exploit a soft Duke interior, and Tucker and Bowie can provide some explosiveness off the bench that Duke might not be ready for. They’ll all have to step up big if Thomas is guarding Greivis, which I think will be the case.

I don’t think the Terps have much chance in a couple of weeks in Cameron. Duke plays much better at home, the Terps play much worse on the road, and Duke has more talent than the Terps. They won’t lose by 40 (sorry to even bring that up), but they won’t be very close either.

That March 3rd game, however, will be a different story. I’ll try to paint a picture for you:

It’s Vasquez, Hayes and Milbourne’s senior night, the last game in Comcast of the year. It’s against our most contemptible rival, and we’ll probably need this win to either get in the tournament (hopefully not) or to get better seeding than last year. I have little doubt that this game will be the loudest in Comcast history. The building will shake. I’m excited because I have a press credential, but if Maryland wins, I won’t be able to rush to celebrate afterwards with my peers because I’ll be stuck writing a game story. C’est la vie.

Do I think Maryland will win this game? My heart says yes. In my short experience as a Terp fan, we have yet to beat Duke. Greivis, Hayes and Milbourne haven’t beaten them since they were freshmen. They’re going to get framed jerseys that night, and I guarantee none of them will have ever wanted a win as badly as they will want that win. In fact, even though none of them will ever admit it, I have a hard time believing March 3rd isn’t circled on each and every basketball player’s calendar or iCal or BlackBerry or whatever.

With that in mind, I can’t in good conscience bet against Maryland. I want it too much, and they want it too much to let a loss occur. I really hope I’m right, because I really want to tell everyone that I was there for Greivis Vasquez’s senior night when Maryland beat Duke.

    • PT
I too, hope we see Padgett some tonight. I don't think there's much of a drop off from Dino to him, perhaps defensive positioning, but Padge has looked pretty good in his last couple showings.
    • JohnE
This Padgett thing has been bothering me for awhile as well. Heard all the arguments about "how you play in practice determines how many minutes you get in the game," and I am still not convinced.

I can believe the line up to a point, but only to a point. If Padgett is one of our three best big men, and surely he is, then why the hell keep him chained to the bench?

The phrase "shooting yourself in the foot" comes to mind! Why does GW keep doing this stuff. I know it's his coaching philosophy, but this day and age with the recruiting the way it is, wouldn't you think some kids look at the Padge situation and say. "that could be me if I go to UMd next year!" Thoughts?
    • Wheels
So...what does DBR not do? Radio guy, recruitnik, tweeter, blogger, and now weatherman.

P.S. - MD must win tonight. Must win.
    • idkwid
But maybe it will not be a transfer. ISn't there a provision that a scholarship athlete with a career (college) ending injury can continue to keep his scholarship until graduation, but that it does not count against the team limit anymore. I think this is waht happened to Jerome Burney, he is (was) still on scholarship, buit iot does not count against the 13. If this is so for Goins, it is not really a transfer.

At any rate, transfers can also be considered a sign of success, that some recruits end up not being proficient enough for your program. With 13 scholarships and a 9 man rotation, you can expect transfers for lack of PT to happen. f
    • Wheels
Technically, coaches renew player scholarships each year. While Gary can continue to use one of his alloted scholarships for Burney or Goins, he won't be able to use those scholarships for new players. What schools typically do is give those students other grant-in-aid packages (like student trainer or managers or even academic) to "honor" their commitment to the player.
    • idkwid
i think you misunderstand, i am talking about something else. a special dispensation for players who have a chronic injury that terminates their college career.the scholarship goes off the books as an 'allocated' scholarship. In this case, the player is no longer on the team (ex. Burney) but he still gets a scholarship providing financial aid. Burney's association with the team is now as a staff member, not as a student athlete.

So, i believe, if Goins medical condition warrants the end of his college career, he can stay at Maryland to complete his studies on a full scholarship that is not counted against the team allotment.
    • Ricksterps
If Goins leaves next year, that will continue a recent trend of a mass of kids transferring from UMD. A transfer from time to time happens. It's part of the sport. But when you have this many transfers it speaks to a lack of vetting by the coaching staff.

It is their job to marry the right recruit with our open 'ships. There have been too many knee-jerk signings at the last minute.

There is a certain dark blue school that specializes in bamboozling kids during recruiting while also shoving others out the door. Let's not be "that" school.
    • ChuckWoolery
      DBR,

Any huge recruiting nuggets? I mean for Md, of course?

What's the word on Goins? I've read the recent Post stuff etc. Would you conclude that Goins will not be a Terp uni next yr? It would make sense to use his scholly for someone that can contribute or develop.
    • DiamondbackRuss
For now all I've been told about Goins is that he's unable to play due to lingering knee issues. Don't know if that will change. All the kid & coaches can do is go by what the Docs say. We'll learn more about his status in time.
    • ChuckWoolery
The game is on ESPN Fullcourt.

Arizona for Ross, eh? Maybe Sean Miller has somethin' up his sleeve.

Evidently SNOWPOCALYPSE 2010 is scheduled for this weekend for the UNC game:

The NWS in sterling Virginia has issued a winter storm warning for heavy snow with near-blizzard conditions, which is in effect from 10 am Friday to 10 pm est saturday. The winter storm watch is no longer in effect.
      Precipitation type, heavy snow.
Accumulations, storm total accumulations of 16 to 24 inches.
Timing, snow will begin mid-morning Friday, and will continue through Saturday evening. This storm has the potential to be similar to the 19 December storm. Plan for substantial disruptions to travel Friday afternoon through the weekend.
    • Ricksterps
      Nice find Ethan.

Padge needs to get his minutes out of Dino's hide. He brings energy and a true shot-blocker. We need both at times during our games.
    • Rizzo
I don't see the game listed on channelsurfing.net...does anyone know if the game will be streaming anywhere?

The game is on ESPN360 and the ESPN package (i think) that you can find at the local bar.
    • Via Patrick Stevens at D1scourse (a great writer and better reporter, but you knew all that already):

"If I had a thing to do over again, I would have played James Padgett some against Clemson," [Gary] Williams said. "I didn't get him in the game, but he played very well against Florida State. It's somebody that has to be a part of our rotation as we play our last 10 games now in the league. Looking forward to that. He had a good practice yesterday. I want him ready to go for tomorrow night."

So I was wrong about the whole "he's not in the rotation" thing. My bad. It's good to hear Gary actually ADDRESS Padgett and some members of the media actually ask him when they have time (no time in postgame, the only time I have a chance to ask him questions). Also good to know that he'll be in the game against Florida State, it's just a matter of when.

One more thing: If I decide to do an ACC preview again next year, I promise it won't be as painfully long as this year's. I kind of got caught up with that first post, and then felt I had set a precedent I couldn't break. Thanks for reading through it (they were about 9,300 words in total, or 15-16 pages SINGLE SPACED in Word. In other words, literally the longest thing I've ever written. I'll try to keep the rest of my posts manageable and exciting.
    • terps96
You know that Padgett quote really bothers me. I know that I'm not a coach, I don't have a 30+ years experience in coaching, I don't have a national title ring, and I don't see these guys in practice all the time...but seeing the games just tells me all that I need to know about Gregory. I mean good lord, I've never seen a guy shake around so much after getting passed the ball, and he has no offensive moves. Give Padge a shot!

The thing that kills me is that Gary made the same mistake with LM his freshmen year which he acknowledged.... and now he is doing it again!

(Note I am fully aware that Dino will probably get 10 pts and 10 rebounds just to spite me tonight and make me eat crow)

      Football recruiting break:

To add to Gregg's earlier post, MD signed 21 players (Rivals - 4 4 star, 15 3 star, average 3.10 stars), which Rivals ranked 37th nationally and 6th in the ACC.

MD got it's clock cleaned in state, signing only 4 of the top 20 recruits. MD got the top 2 DC recruits. Franklin actually said that the day would come soon when MD would get it's pick of the players in state. Strong words, James, strong words indeed...especially for man who almost lost his job due to running an abnormally average offense. That's me being kind.

Finally, and this is for both Gregg and Jeremy, I read that MD is switching to a multiple offense next year and getting away from the West Coast offense. Looks like Ralph sat Loud Mouth James down for a stern talking to. Run your West Coast stuff when I'm gone. In the meantime, run my offense.

Over-under for wins next season: 7.

      Back to hoops.
    • GERRY
Thanks guys. It's early on this thread and others may chime in but I am beginning to
sense your "resolution" that this years edition of Terp basketball is, at best, ......
"tweeners" i.e, tween being bad and real good. They could fall flat or surprise the
oddsmakers and their detractors. No amount of prognostication on this site is going
to alter their course. It has to be played out. What we will be seeing in the next two months will be the finishing touches on this teams legacy and some of the players
may, in the final analysis, be "memorialized".

eddienj and others - Even between all the "critique's" your luv for GV as well as sporadic frustration with him is apparent. True it is, he is (one of) the best players of his era. That said, nothing should change here on the Soup. Our spontanaity (sp?) and inciteful analysis are the engine of the Soup. It's what drives us to this site and
fuels its existence. I really can't imagine Terp BB without the Soup. Thanks again, Jeremy, Gregg and Ethan.

We always should maintain a "bring it on" attitude. It brings out the best in the Soupers. We might be challenged now and then but ......don't ya just love it?

      Go Terps.
    • DiamondbackRuss
I hope Padge gets some run against FSU. He did well in 10 mins against them at Comcast. Grabbed 4 boards.
    • eddienj
I was at MSG for the first two games of the 2002 season. A shocking loss in the opener to Arizona (very underrated in pre-season that year) then a win against Temple the next night. I don't think I never felt that "I knew" we were going to win the title. Not even at HT of the Indiana game. But I did feel from the very beginning that we really had a good chance. As good a chance as any team including Dook, Oklahoma and Kansas. I was super-happy Indiana beat Oklahoma in the semis because they had spanked us in Norman in December. That Sooners team was the only one I feared. Didn't worry about Kansas at all. Ol' Roy was half the coach then that he is now. His Kansas teams had a habit of choking in the elimination games. That Drew Nicholas game will never be forgotten. He hit a couple of those shots from the scorer's table.

      NOTE TO GERRY:
Personally, I absolutely love our man GV. He is my favorite Terp since the national title days. But he sometimes drives me absolutely crazy with his decision-making. I guess that's his legacy. By far the best player of his era for the Terps but also the most scrutinized by a wide margin.

I think we will win Thursday. It will be a struggle. We're not gonna go to Tallahassee and blow them out. But we will hang tough and we will win. I am confident. I think.
    • For the record, I remember exactly when I "knew" the 2002 Terps were going all the way. It was an early February road game at UVA and the Terps were down 9 with three minutes to play. Drew Nicholas caught fire and led a ridiculous comeback and the Terps won. Perhaps you remember it.

To put that win in perspective, there were a few possessions during the comeback when the Terps rolled the ball up the court to prevent the clock from starting. Historically, that was always a signal to turn off the TV because Terp teams never won games after resorting to the "roll the ball" routine. After we defied the odds and won, I turned to my buddy and said "we are winning the national championship". that team just had that special something and that was the moment I realized it.
    • okaybowler
GER, that's one hell of a post.

I think we've speculated enough for the rest of the season. Thankfully, we'll have some real action tomorrow to distract us from the ongoing debate about this team, it's seniors and their legacies.

In other news, it looks like UVA is the real deal. I think we all thought they would fade once conf play picked up, but they handled UNC @ the dean, and just took care of NCst (47 points in the whole game. We've nearly scored that many in a half).

UVA and dook are tied for #1. We are at #3. Gotta keep winning, especially need some road wins.

      GO TERPS!
    • Ricksterps
      Very good post Gerry.

Let me clarify a couple things. First, I have not given up on this season. We can still do some very special things. Two, I would not blame this season on GV--barring him going all Gilchris on us.

I still remember him claiming this team his sophomore year. He said now that the seniors are gone, this is his team. You know what, he was right. It has been his team. If you step up and say "This is on my shoulders, hop on and enjoy the ride" it better go well. If it doesn't, it's on you.

All three seniors will have been part of two and a half years of eh BB. But only one has thrust himself in the leadership role. Only one will have his jersey hanging from the rafters. People will remember him because he will be the one senior with a legacy. The other two will be remembered as complimentary players.

To steal a line from Will Money in Unforgiven...

Little Bill is lying on the floor with Will Money (Clint Eastwood) standing over him with a gun leveled at his head.

      Little Bill : "I don't deserve this"
Will Money: "deserve's got nothing to do with it"

      Blam!

This isn't about whether or not GV deserves the blame of the last three years, it's just the way it is. People from outside of the program and inside will associate him with a down time in Terp BB history. Especially if the next class comes in and does well.

This year is far from done. I think Clemson was the exception and not the rule. I'm just saying who has the most at stake if things go wrong.
    • Gregg
      You gotta love Gerry.

I just wanted to give Fridge and Franklin a congrats for what is being called a very good recruiting class. Not that the rankings mean a whole lot, but to be talked about in the top 40 after such a horrid season is something. Now it's time to use these kids and start winning games.

I can't wait for tomorrow night!
    • GERRY
      GERRY's in the house.

Ya'll should be commended for a decent attempt to "frame" this years team and it's legacy. Ethan's was very good but too long (not verbose) to reasonably comment.

It's difficult to understand why there are some loyal Soupers, most with high BB IQ, that are such "GV-Slayers". Your efforts to "frame" the legacy of this team or it's 3 Seniors on one player is irrational. Now, I didn't say dumb or stupid. To do as you seem to suggest is akin to saying ....the Viking are not in the Super Bowl because Favre threw an interception of just couldn't provide the leadership to get them to Miami. He had a legenday year....a modern day Johnny Unitias. Clearly there are a few other sports analogies that are equally germane. Every team has one of two
really stellar players, whose efforts tend to elevate the team. However, college B-ballers get one 4-yr crack at it. The first two years they are right of of Mom's kitchen
and are both scared, excited and some times pompous.

Take our NatChamp team for example....Souper "okbowler" really hit the nail on the head with his thread at the end of the Clemson thread. No one on this site....that's no one can actually claim they saw that NatChamp coming ---at this time of the season....on that team. No doubt Wheels, Gregg, Jeremy, DBR, Ricksterps, eddienj, for a few, at one time or another also helped give us a "checkup from the neckup". All of you, combined, make the Soup the best blog in college BB.
We are getting closer to agreeing to disagree on some major issues. Hardly anyone on this site seems out of touch or disjointed. Everyone's views seem to be respected and there's a fair amount of comedy to lighten the load. Gotta love it.

      Read on.

I watched the MD VS UCLA (1982) Classic on ESPN last night - it struck me that those
players (team) were much like our beloveds today. There were no real superstars.
Ben Coleman played exceptional, Adkins was like Hayes, of course Adrian Branch
could be compared to GV, Mark Fothergill was comparable to Dino or Padge (but rose to the occasion) and Herman Veal was no superstar. I didn't see a Mosely type. Here's the catch.

I attended a slug of games at Cole from 1968 to 1979 then moved to New England.
Somehow, I honestly said to myself....why watch this freaking game....they are only going to lose? It's too painful. I know, stupid right? In 1982 I was totally absorbed in getting my busiiness off the ground. Obvioiusly missed out on this season and game.

To those who don't know or can't remember what I am talking about.....please be patient.

As the game came to a close at regulation, I actually turned away because I just
knew UCLA would bank in a shot at the buzzer.

Hot damn.....OT. Crap....they came so far just to lose in OT.

Still, I honestly felt better knowing they would lose in OT.

MF.....2nd OT....Now hang with me ....in my heart of hearts I actually thought they
      were going to lose.

Of course, they actually beat UCLA at Cole Field House. Imagine watching that game last night, knowing they were going to lose. No other way out. As the 2nd OT came to a close I thought someone had "doctored" the tape . What a cruel joke to play on us. Why would anyone do that? As the terps celebrated the win....I stared at the TV not quite believing what I just saw.

Now you may say WTF does that have to do with this years team?

      Answer - EVERYTHING.

Those terps met (or exceeded) terp nation's expectation. UCLA had whupped on them before. That game was like beating UNC, at UNC, on National TV, on Sunday when they were #1 and undefeated.

Crap....I forgot to remind you GV had a triple-double in that game. Apologize.

Somehow we have it fixed in our mind that he's the Leader of this team. Maybe ....maybe not. It's certain that we probably can't win much without him.
No terp player in recent history seems to have gotten so much criticism as GV. I remember Albert King was going to "save us". He was a very good player but not often criticized. Look at Blake his first 2 years....no one.....that's no one on this site predicted he'd be the all-time assist leader or that Juan would be MVP of the Nat Champ team.

We are chomping at the bit to have this team do what others have done. It might happen might not. But no team's fate rests on 1 player. That's just not fair. That person may be the MVP of the team or it's worst nightmare. Both of those type players in other era's in other venues have performed miracles.

Thanks for you patience. Hope I made a point that's worthy of some positive
feedback. I'll take the other as well and stay the course.

Ya see, it's not really GV or EH, or JW etc.

IT's Us. We just want to get down there on the floor and coach the living B'Jesus
      on this team.

We watch, we hope, we sometimes pray. Sometimes we're inspired and others....
well....let's just say we throw up in our mouths as Jeremy once said.

Within days, we are back with our drinks in our hands, ready to get after it again and "will" them onward.

I'm afraid to proof read this. So here goes.

      Go Terps

Pe'Shon Howards response to Ross situation on formspring.me

what u think about T.Ross going back home to Oregon? looking kinda bad for the terps.

na terps still got a chance all his others schools on the east coast too.

I dont know if I believe Howard but hes said repeated times on that site that hes talked to Ross all the time. If you want some inside info the best bet is to ask him on formspring.me
    • DiamondbackRuss
Stu Vetter told the WaPo that it was a "parental decision" for Ross to leave Montrose Christian. Given the privacy laws that's probably all he can say about the subject.
    • Wheels
DBR....could this also explain Ross not signing with MD when the early period opened? MD has a habit of not allowing kids to sign who don't qualify academically. If Ross is as good as he thinks, his one year in prep school will count as his one year post HS before entering the NBA draft, won't it? If he is having academic issues, what was this past summer all about? This all smells fishy. He'll end up UK. or maybe he'll pull a Jennings and go to Italy for a year. The kid has already moved out of area once to live on his own for hoops. Why not again?
    • DiamondbackRuss
If any school knows Ross' academic/test score situation it's UMD.
    • mightyterps
hey wheels and terps 96-- great funny posts
    • mightyterps
ricksteps---you hit some stuff right on the head. also ethan great post. i looked at some stats for our seniors. lm great soft touch as a shooter, can be bullied by more physical defensive players. eh , number one in acc in ft % number two in acc in 3 pt % number 2 in acc in asst/to %. will finish as number one in maryland history in ft % i think very strong numbers and we have people bitching that he is starting, are they crazy? gv a try hard { sometimes too hard } leader that we say has too mature. he needs to mature fast {like by thursday} if he should be spoken about as a great leader.nobody that throws the ball away 9 times is a leader and should not be allowed to dance and shimmy EVER. the hell with that is his personality.
    • Wheels
I believe there is a 11:45 train outbound from somewhere in GA being conducted by Engineer Gerry that is going to smash you...I see the headlights now...ready...ready...ready...

(Gerry, I joke because I love)
    • terps96
      don't forget assistant engineer Chrs0049
    • Ricksterps
Very nice write-up Ethan. Most of those assessments are dead-on.

I have been staying away from the third rail of the Soup for awhile. Yea, you guessed it Mr. Greivis Loco himself.

These next few games will mean a lot to his legacy. If we were to go into a dive and end up 7-9 or 8-8 in conference, barring an ACC tourney run, we are NIT bound. That would mean GV led us to one NCAA tournament in the three years of his leadership. His freshman year it was Strawberry and Company's team. He was along for the ride.

I would say no other Maryland "star" player ever had that level of team disappointment. Walt Williams stayed on and led us through probation with absolutely no talent around him so he gets a free pass.

Now I already hear the GV fan club "He didn't have the talent around him". We had decent talent and we played right to our level. Isn't a true star player suppose to raise us above expectations? Last season was the only year we played better than expected. His sophomore year we played well below expectations.

There is A LOT riding on this season for GV and, to a lesser extent, the other two seniors. They could get on a tear and win the regular season title. They could win the ACC tourney. They could get to a sweet sixteen. Any of those things and GV is remembered in a different light.

If they stumble and bumble their way to another disappointing 8-8 finish with an NIT berth. Well, that's a different story. You will see that jersey up in the rafters and think, "at least he scored a lot of points". There will be no team accomplishment associated with his legacy.

Right now, he isn't a true team leader that raises the game of his teammates. He is a guy that scores points and gets really excited in the process.

The future is now Mr. Vasquez. There are no more tomorrows. Let's get some team accomplishments to go with all the individual ones.
    • Wheels
Geez Rick...you threw yourself onto that 3rd rail! If you're not electrocuted by it, that train named Gerry is going to run you over!

(Unsurprisingly, I agree with your assessment...dead on and true like a Rodney Monroe jumper)
    • eddienj
Damn. You bring up Rodney. In a game at Hagerstown, the gym was packed to the rafters, the game was on local cable TV, and I was covering Rodney on an in-bounds pass from the side. Rodney ran off a pick and alley-ooped dunked it on me on an in-bounds pass! I ball hit me in the head after it went through the hoop. True story. :-)

this was posted in the last thread but def worth a read if you missed it. Dookie Feinstein on the ACC.
    • Wheels
      Nicely done, Ethan.

      Onto Mr. Ross's situation...

Red flags for every team recruiting this kid. Past behavior predicts future behavior. In 6 weeks, this kid has decommited from one school that he said for months was his school and now left the HS program that launched his prospects into high-major status. And oh...he's leaving in the middle of the season?

This kid has to have something going on behind the scene (maybe family issues??), but it smells of instability. This isn't the kind of kid you want in your program unless you are Kentucky. I'd expect Dook and KU to back off a bit from recruiting him. I mean, come on, this kid dropped MD because he was so flattered that Dook, KU, and UK were now recruiting him and now he dropped Stu Vetter after making him look bad over the MD decommit? Smells like prima donna and John Gilchrist immaturity to me. I don't care how good he is. He's throwing up red flags. Buyer beware (eh-hem, Kentucky).

      Stay away.
    • terps96
I agree, with the exception of family issues coming up I can't think of a good reason to leave one of the premier H.S. basketball programs in the country. This helps take the sting away a little bit.
    • DiamondbackRuss
For a myriad of reasons I held off on posting this but now that its out in the open that Ross is leaving Montrose...

For several weeks there was a growing din that Ross had some significant academic and/or test score issues. So much so that several people, who should know about these things, indicated to me that a year of prep school may be in his future.

This new development of him leaving Montrose, smells like Nike pulling him back to Portland to go to public school in an attempt to get those grades up.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Virginia Tech's barn has been a chamber of horrors for theTerps. Would absolutely LOVE to get a win there this year...and it's very doable. Having Ga Tech at home certainly helps but their front court is daunting. Although in HS Padge handled Derrick Favors...but I doubt Padge sees much PT in that game. Even with how the Terps played at Clemson, going 11-5 in the ACC is not out of the question.

And just in case people missed it, T-Ross is leaving Montrose Christian.
