    26 = Loss

    26 Turnovers. 26. That’s a lot.

Yet, we were winning with 4 minutes to go. So how do we look at this game?

Did we give this game away? Yes. No doubt. I mean, 26 turnovers. Vasquez had 9 of them. 9 turnovers. I think 8 of em were legit, since I’ll argue the elbow to the face late in the game. That was a bad call and he would have scored on the play, giving us a better chance to tie things up. Now before some of you start to think I’m trying to blame Vasquez for this loss, calm down Gerry! He was a part of it, but everyone has to deal with blame except Jordan Williams who busted his ass and played his heart out. 13 points and 13 boards while dealing with a very good front line. He was a warrior.

    Now to the culprits:
Landon Milbourne - Classic ‘bad matchup’ game for Landon. He could not get open for those short jumpers and could not drive to the basket. His one nice drive, he tried to lay in a reverse and missed. Gotta dunk those. Anyway, he battled, but just seems to have bad games against teams like Clemson.

Eric Hayes - Did not have his shot going, and was too slow on defense. He also made some uncharacteristic turnovers trying to force the issue. For most of the game, the entire team was playing a bit too crazy. Obviously not doing the things they did the past couple of weeks.

Sean Mosley - Did well on defense for the most part, but was 3-8 from the field including some misses close in. He always plays hard, so I can’t be too tough on him, but we could have used more offense.

The Bench – they shot 3-13 on the night. Not good. Gregory struggled. After a couple of good baskets, he regressed to the ’scared-looking player’ he’s been at times. I’m not saying he is scared, but sometimes when he gets the ball, he seems to panic or at least look panicked. Bowie and Tucker did very little. Bowie should know by now he is not going to get a call driving into the trees, so stop doing it unless you have a plan!!

Greivis Vasquez - I blame Vasquez big time for this because he took himself out of the game in the first half. Sure, he started off a little wild, but we would have been in much better shape had he been in there during the first half. After an offensive foul that he just cannot take (especially on the road, where you don’t get the benefit of the doubt), but he tries to contest a shot with 17 minutes left in the half. That’s 37 minutes left in the game. Can’t do that if you are a senior leader. You saw in the second half what he was able to do to help lead us back, so taking himself out of the game in the first was huge. You can argue shot selection late, but those curls around the screen and hitting off the glass is his bread and butter. If anything, you could argue he should have taken more shots instead of trying to pass inside. It’s far better to miss and have your guys ready for rebounds then force them a pass with those big guys waiting.

Okay, now that the blame has been doled out. Here is the good news. WE WERE WINNING THIS GAME WITH 4 MINUTES LEFT. That’s amazing to me. You can say that Clemson missed a lot of shots, but our guys had something to do with that. We battled and scratched and clawed our way to the lead, then just forgot what got us the lead in the first place. But in past years, if we play like this and commit 26 turnovers we lose by 20+. That’s why this team is different. That’s why I still have optimism.

However, you can’t continue to live on these kinds of losses. Eventually, these games have to be wins if you intend on doing something special with your season. There are no more moral victories. We’ve had two of them already. That’s it. We must go to Florida State and get the job done. They’ll have all week to digest this one and learn.

We can beat any team in this league. Now it’s time to prove that.

    • Looks like TRoss is heading back west to be with his girl and his mom. I,m guessing he is going to be a Duck next year. Time will tell.

Gary and Jim Boeheim have the same argument for tournament expansion....football. The football bowl system takes about 68 out of 120 teams each year.

The BB tourney takes 65 out of about 347 teams. Gary thinks people weigh going to the NCAA tourney the same as making a bowl game.

Some people do. I have seen people compare Ralph and Gary and they compare bowl appearances with NCAA appearances. It's not even remotely close. You have to have a good season to make the tourney. You can do next to nothing and get a bowl invite.

Expansion is a forgone conclusion for the same reason we won't see a playoff system in football. Money, money money. I read that ESPN is offering almost double the money they get now if they expand. No chance they turn that money down.

BR: Why is there the NIT? They might as well throw the NIT away.
GW: Let's not go there. We all know about the NIT. I mean, come on.
BR: Oh I know you don't like it, Gary.
GW: In the real world, there's the NCAA tournament and nothing at the end of the year. We all know that. I've been in the NIT, I know how that feels to be in the NIT.
BR: Been there, done that as well, with Mason.
MW: True story, Gar, or not? You actually looked at a ref in an NIT game and go, "Hey, I know we gotta be here, but what are you doing here?"
GW: [ignores question] I tell you what...

Yes. The ACC wants to be a football conference. The numbers do not lie. The budget numbers, that is.
    • Ricksterps
The wins and losses don't lie either. No one on the planet would call the ACC a football conference.

Lots of money being spent but the results are horrid. We were the worst BCS conference in football last year hands down. Maybe it pays off somewhere down the line but for now it's been a total failure.
    • eddienj
I don't follow the football recruiting closely, but I've been reading that the Terps have a Top 40 class coming in next year? That's mighty impressive considering the season we just had. Good job by coaching staff.
    • DiamondbackRuss
I'm in the process of collecting information on recruits that will be at the UNC game. The list is fluid right now but when the dust settles I'll post what I have.

My road to the tourney this season has always been 6-2 at home and 4-4 on the road. If we drop the FSU game it means our margin for error just got even smaller.

If we are 5-3 at the turn, you would think we sitting pretty but the reality is the schedule is much more difficult in the second half of the season.

Those two Duke games are going to be difficult. I don't think we match up very well against them. I can see them throwing in about 15 3's against our sagging defense.

One side note on FSU...what's with this "fear the spear" crap? Get your own ironically cool slogan.
    • leftyerafan
I think we ceded the "fear the ...". slogan. We are "Unstoppable starts here" or some such drivel.
    • Ironically, Fear the Turtle is still the Athletics slogan. Unstoppable Starts Here is the schoolwide administrative slogan, with regards to research, academics and the like. No one on campus is entirely sure what it means.

Thanks Ethan, if they ever do explain what it means, please pass it on to us.
    • Wheels
Two things. First, the proposed expansion to 96 is a terrible idea. I think we all agree on that, although Gary seems to want it. That is understandable, especially given MD's perpetual bubble status and his contract incentives. To tie this to the BCS, I hate the argument that some make about "well, where do you draw the line? Some team will always be left out. Do you make it 4, 8, or 16? Then #17 will complain." True...but the #17 team isn't expected to win the whole thing. Not like a #2 or #3 team. It's like a bubble team trying to get a #10 seed in hoops. They don't think they can win it all, but they want to be a part of the dance.

Now, number two. Rick listed the Terps remaining schedule a few posts above, and I'm pasting it down below. I think it takes a 10-6 regular season to assure a NCAA bid, and MD's 4-2 right now. The next two games are winnable, and 6-2 at the turn would be great.

      @FSU
      UNC
      UVA
      @DUKE
      @NC STATE
      GT
      Clemson
      @Va Tech
      Duke
      @UVA

The easiest path to 10 is to win the remaining 5 at home and pick off one on the road (VT and NCSt look nice, don't they?). The home slate actually looks more doable, too, doesn't it? UNC ain't what it was last year, and I think MD should beat BooVa. That leaves 3 tough but not scary home games: GT, Clemson, and Dook.

The 5 remaining road games aren't exactly murderers row either, with VT, BooVa, FSU, and NCSt all being places that MD has enjoyed some success. At Dook is, well, at Dook, and MD will be returning to the scene of the crime from last year.

MD can trade 2 wins for 1 loss all the way in, and I hope that's what they do. A 6-4 finish isn't like climbing Everest, is it? Again, I don't have any real expectations because this team could win or lose all of these game, although that's highly unlikely. I just don't want to see a reversion to how they played earlier in the season against Wisconsin, Cincy, and W&M. No losing streaks. FSU is a must win. If they can get a win down there, it makes the remainder much easier. Must win, must win.
    • chiterp
I agree with you Wheels (about the expansion and the rest of MD's slate)...although, I think we will need 11-5 to sit and be happy. I think we beat FSU, UNC, UVA, NC State, CLEMSON (those fuckers!...damn, i'm still salty from the loss...just a wierd ass game man), VA Tech & Duke. That's 7 right there. I think we lose to Duke at Duke, GA Tech and that last UVA game (we always lose that last game).

We'll see how this shit pans out.

Meanwhile, it just occured to me that we are looking mighty think next year. Mosley and J-Will make me happy...but I don' know what we get from Tucker, Bowie & Dino as starters. Padgett will be a decent back up and then we have 3 freshmen (Stoglin, Parker and Pe'Shon) as back ups for Tucker, Bowie & Mosley). We looking kinda weak at the guard positions (unless the freshmen turn out to be dynamites). Meanwhile, Goins can't seem to stop injuring that knee...he would have been my back up for J-Will...but with him always hurt, I don't know.

I get ahead of myself. Let's smash FSU first.
    • chiterp
This one is tough for me because we actually had a chance to win with 4 minutes to go...AND OUR GUYS HAD AN OFF NIGHT!!! That is fucking nuts! I hate it when refs make bad calls. I disagreed with the 2nd offensive foul call on GV...as well as the elbow foul. We did not lose this game because of bad foul calls, but anyone whoever tells me again that bad calls don't have an effect on close games is just fucking naive.

It's really a tough loss, but I have not lost faith in this team. I mean, we could have beaten Clemson...but for the off night. This team should finish in the top 4. I believe we are going to beat FSU at FSU. Mark the tape.

I won't even get nervous for the Terps this Thusday. W are going to win.

Now, imma go back to my corner and shake my head at the bad luck we got against Clemson.

Tied with 4 minutes left???? as bad as we played??? I still can't believe it. So close and yet so far

By the way, DBR, do you know what mini tourney that the Terps will be playing at the beginning of the 2010-2011 season? Anyone know?

      Thanks.

I don't think they finalize these things until later, but I saw an article that said Bruce Weber was 95% sure IL would be participating in the Coaches vs Cancer in November ... along with possibly Texas, Pittsburgh, & Maryland. Sounds like a serious field, but the last time we went to NY for this event I think we won.

Clemson played without their pg, shot 31%, and turned it over 22 times. Oh, by the way... Clemson is not that good. This loss bleeds from the top and saturates every level down to the guy who didn't give Vazquez the towel the 'second' he asked for it. The assertion that past teams would have been blown out under similar circumstances completely ignores Clemson's utter aversion to dribbling/layup-making/FT shooting/wide open jump shot making/bb IQ.
      This was a total regression.

It is being reported that junior forward Jordan DeMercy has left FSU. He was unhappy with his diminished playing time. Hard to say what this will mean, if anything, for Thursday's game, although he was apparently a good defender. It reduces their depth a bit. Although not having Stitt didn't affect Clemson's ability to press us to death.

The only great thing about a 96 team tourney is that the Terps hopefully won't have to worry about winding up in the NIT every other year as they have in recent years.

FSU is almost a must win game again --- hopefully the Terps use these days off to prepare and come out ready to play instead of repeating the type of performance that they showed against Clemson...
    • eddienj
With 96 teams what will we talk about all season? There won't be any more "big games", "must-wins", "need to get to 10 wins", etc. We will always be in the tournament. It makes for a less exciting regular season. I don't like it. Maybe for Miami, Virginia or VaTech it might be a good thing. But we're Maryland damn it. We should be able to make the top 65. These days with the parity in college basketball, just making the tournament is an accomplishment. 96 teams? You're gonna end up with 23rd seeds. Also, the top 32 (1 through 8 seeds) will have to get one bye. The bracket looks much uglier that way. I would be more apt to agree with the 68 teams or whatever.
    • PT
It's an awful idea. As much as I hate the BCS championship in football, going to a large tournament format there would screw things up too. Basketball has now what football should have - an appropriate tournament size so teams get a shot but the regular season still means a great deal. 96 teams means making the Big Dance won't be so much an accomplishment any longer. Sheesh.
    • ChuckWoolery
It's also on washingtonpost.com - also like the Enquirer
    • Grayson73
We committed 26 TOs, but forced 22 TOs. Yes, it would have been better to take care of the ball, but the real killer was allowing 20 offensive rebounds, which allowed them to take 17 more shots than us. That negated the excellent first shot defense.

I am also encouraged that we played so poorly and still were up late in the game.
    • Ricksterps
That may be true but that website looks like the National Enquirer of the sporting world DBR. Not totally sold until I see a more reputable news source report it.

It was next to the "Tiger's boyfriend speaks" article :)

True...but the National Enquirer did break the "Rock Hudson has AIDS" story way back in the day...and was ready to report that Tiger had mistresses. Just something I stumbled across. Took everyone's mind off of the Clemson game for a moment tho lol

sportsbybrooks is actually pretty reliable, as far as sports/athlete/celebrity gossip goes.
    • The National Enquirer is up for Pulitzer for the John Edwards fiasco. that is not a joke. A 96-team NCAA Tournament field will ruin the sport. there will be no value to making the field. this is a terrible idea. Greed is ruining everything in society I swear.

Right you are Ethan about Bowie and his often reckless drives. What I wouldn't give for a guard/wing player with the skill to stop and hit the 10/12 foot jumper. I've been wanting that for a few years now. Too often players get caught in a drive because they have no in-between game. Milbourne has a nice mid range game but it's of a different variety as he's often matched up against bigger guys. MD doesn't really have anyone who can knock down a true pull up jumper off the dribble. Maybe Stoglin can bring it to the table next year.
    • Ricksterps
One thing Gary said a couple of years ago really rings true. He said one of the problems fans have in the "bubble talk era" is they start worrying about the bubble before there really is a bubble.

Currently, no one is in the tournament and no one is out. If the Terps go 10-6 they will get plenty of quality wins.

      @FSU
      UNC
      UVA
      @DUKE
      @NC STATE
      GT
      Clemson
      @Va Tech

      @UVA

Lots of quality wins there. This team will have many opportunities to prove they belong over the coming weeks.
    • All good stuff here, why I love being a part of this site. The sun did come up today, as DBR pointed out, and all of our players are still on the team and healthy. The FSU game is more important than the Clemson game was because we've proven we can beat them. Since playing the 'Noles, Jordan Williams has stepped his game up even farther on the defensive end, and Alabi won't have as big a game. The game will probably come down to Landon Milbourne and Chris Singleton. Singleton is preposterously athletic and gave it to the Terps in our opener. Guys like him tend to have a bigger impact at home because their athletic dunks and blocks will bring the crowd to their feet. Neutralizing him is going to be the key storyline in the game in my opinion.

Just some other thoughts with a few more hours to digest the "show" the Terps put on yesterday:

-For all the praise heaped on Cliff Tucker, I still have yet to buy in. The kid is clearly talented, and we all thought he re-focused himself and became a better basketball player as opposed to just an athlete or scorer. I think we all need to take a step back and see him for what he is: a guy with talent but without the head to match it. He took some terrible shots against CU, and just looked out of place. Same with Dino, but he had some moments and is always going to hustle and be a good defensive presence. I can't say the same about Tucker.

-Adrian Bowie, though he's a very good penetrator, needs to know that refs in the college game don't call bailout fouls like they do in the NBA. He needs to stop driving into traffic with guys that are 6 or 7 inches taller than him and trying to draw a foul without any hope of getting a good look. Again, in the NBA that might work, but college refs are way more likely to let the kids play, and he needs to realize that before he just charges in there with his head down.

-Greivis could have been worse yesterday. Yes he turned it over nine times, which sucked. Not all of them were his fault (like that unbelievable offensive foul call), but some were. It's hard to be a great distributor and avoid mistakes when guys are dropping perfect passes and turning it over whenever they touch the ball too. Greivis needed to be a calming influence, but I don't think any Venezuelan magic could have cured what ailed the Terps yesterday. They lack any sort of focus and intensity, which they need to get back to beat FSU and get off the bubble.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Congrats to Jordan Williams on being named ACC Rookie of the Week. First time this has been bestowed on a Terp since Vasquez in 2007.

This is from ESPN Rumors Insider - But suffice to say, if we beat FSU...this will go away for now

      Is Maryland on the bubble?
February, 1, 2010 Feb 110:39AM ETEmail Print Share By Eamonn Brennan It seems silly to ask. There are several reasons: Maryland was atop the ACC standings before Sunday night's loss at Clemson. The Terps are the eighth-most efficient team in the country; they score almost 1.14 points per possession and have raised that number in conference. And they have senior leadership and stardom, rare NCAA tournament luxuries, thanks to point guard Greivis Vasquez. The Terps don't feel like a bubble team, do they?

A look at their record reveals otherwise: The Terps are 1-4 against the RPI top 50 and have no real quality wins to speak of. It's possible Maryland's best road win is at Indiana on Dec. 1, and let's just say the committee isn't going to be handing out lollipops for beating Indiana. The truth is that Maryland hasn't been tested. Or, more accurately, every time the Terps have had a reasonable test they've failed. They beat the teams they're supposed to beat and lose to the teams to which they're supposed to lose to. So why does it feel like we know nothing about them?

I'm not the only one here; the Maryland fans at Testudo Times have similar concerns:

So, no, the sky is not falling. At the same time, the ugly truth of the matter is that this team rests squarely on the bubble after the loss, and I do think you have to take something out of this loss. [...] Here's the thing: Maryland doesn't have any incriminating losses. Nor do they have any particularly encouraging wins, outside of the home win against FSU. We really don't know just how good or bad this team is yet. That's partially what makes the upcoming FSU game so important.

Maryland is an efficient team. The numbers say good things about the Terps. Now it's time to match those numbers with a few résumé-building wins. It would be a shame if a team this good, with a coach this hard-working, didn't make the most of the opportunity. Maryland is at risk of doing just that.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Maryland is running out of time to get a road victory over a team with a top 100 RPI.
    • markmax33
I noticed a coupe of things and they have probably all been said before but here goes:

      1. Eric Hayes did not set himself up properly for many of his 3 point shots. It is the shooter's job to be in position NEAR the 3 point line before the kickout pass comes to you. He was forced into taking 3's from 5' behind the freakin line because he mentally lapsed on several of those shots.

      2. The handchecking and physicality of that game was unlike any other game I have seen this year. I felt like they had 2 hands on our guards at all times. It's fine if calls go both ways. We need to figure out how to adapt to this style of play. Hayes and Bowie looked COMPLETELY out of place against this sort of defense and struggled even getting the ball up the court. Since GV was out the whole first half and he is the only one how can dribble through that mess it didn't turn out well for us.

      3. Obviously they got a ton of calls. I think in the grand scheme of things they had a 3-4 call advantage over us during the game. Generally the refs try to keep it fairly even but you are on the road in the ACC. It ain't easy.

      4. Thank GOD Jordan didn't sprain his ankle badly on that one play. I'll take a loss if we can keep that kid healthy for the next 5 games.

      5. We have to trust our plays and run them. We allowed them to bump us off the ball while running our curls and cuts and it put us on tilt. We have to fight through it and deliver the balls to the spots.

      6. Dino is lost.
    • Ricksterps
One other thing scares me about the Clemson game. We didn't play well in the closing minutes of a tight game again. That was a 2 point ball game with about 2 minutes left and we performed poorly.

We have four wins by comfortable margins and two tight losses. We have to figure out how to play better in the waning minutes of the game. That falls on all three seniors.

Dino may have ADHD. The kid just starts gyrating all over the place when the ball touches his hands. Relax big fella.

    • DiamondbackRuss
Hey, what do u know...the sun did come up today.
    • Wheels
I can't believe anyone here who watched the game can lay this at the feet of one player or the coach. I think they came ready to play. They got past the first 10 minutes of the game when Clemson came out with a ton of energy. The only person on the team who didn't, and to quote DBR, play like he had mittens on his hands was Jordan Williams. Everyone else, every single player, acted like the they were playing the old grease the watermelon in the pool on the 4th of July game. Who could Gary have put in who wouldn't have turned the ball over? And Cliff Tucker should have his scholarship revoked after these last two games. Calling him inconsistent is defaming the word inconsistent. And Adrian I Seen Bowie...I seen you look like you got no J and no brain.

Back to the game. Sometimes things just spiral. The bad spreads from person to person. There's nothing you can do to stop it.

I do disagree with those who say that Clemson won that game, that it was Clemson who forced MD to play the way the did. I don't know about that. I didn't think Clemson did anything to get MD into the mindset of playing ahead of themselves that carried over the entire game. To be sure, Clemson's D, especially in the first half, was really good. But many of MD's TOs were dribble the ball off of your foot TOs.

You could see how frustrated MD was, but you could also see how frustrated Clemson was. They have to be feeling pretty good...they played about as poorly as a winning team could ever play. I think that has more to do with MD than them. MD totally took Clemson out of their game.

So obviously, you hope next game is the bounce-back game. I don't expect 2 poor games in a row out of these guys. You hope that the seniors are so pissed at themselves that they play much better. I doubt we'll see more than 12 TOs against FSU. BUT 20 offensive rebounds...that cannot happen against FSU. A win at the Old Leon County Civic Center will do MD lots of good. And MD has played well at FSU in the past. I can take 2 for 1s the rest of the way in. They can't have any losing streaks. Getting to 6-2 at the turn in the ACC? Perfect.

Couldn’t agree more about the Clemson outplayed the Terps theory. That’s what made the loss so frustrating to me. Clemson did everything they could to give the Terps a road win, they were absolutely dreadful. It was like both teams were trying to give each other the W, the Terps just happened to be more persistent.
    • ravdave
Out Hustled, plain and simple. Clemson's defense and press were more stifling than ours. Lapses in concentration are indicative of ACC road play for younger teams. Lackadaisical passing, pocket picking dribbling, and dribbling into traps are all part of growing up away from home in the ACC. It is hard to understand how a senior laiden team falls into this malaise. A key to success for this year's Terps will be how well they remember to bring the same smarts, intensity, and Hustle they have shown at home to Tobacco Road.

And for God's sake put the contested threes back in your pocket and shoot the wide open ones!

On the bright side, the defense was still pretty good. We were winning with four minutes left because of that D! And Oh, what a monster game from JDub. Ripping boards and making those elusive put backs. He is going to be something to watch these next four years.

I'm betting this team will definitely bounce back. We may lose again, but I do not believe we will see this type of inept ball handling and sleepy offense again.

      Go Terps!
    • Jimmy John
Not a shock that we lost this game, odds were stacked against us (Clemson playing at home with a 3 game losing streak). I think the disappointment comes with the fact that despite 26 turnovers, a stat that would usually warrant a blow out, Clemson tried to give us the game with their poor free throw and field goal percentages.

No finger pointing from me in this one everybody contributed to a loss best described as ugly (J Will looked nice though).

This makes two close road games that were the Terps to win and they fell short in both, I can't help but feeling this will come back to haunt them. Not pumped about their play down the stretch in close games (1 FG in the last 4 minutes last night).

Time to move on to Florida State, in a year when everybody is beating everybody in the ACC no time to celebrate a win or cry about a loss.
    • mightyterps
jonbruns--good point i only saw the final 8 minutes. i listened to it on the way home from work and chris and johnny made the same comments. twice on a play stoppage whistle they called the whistle the wrong way and could not beleive what was called.
    • jonbruns
I am probably going to get yelled at with this. I will probably hear all the "You're a Terps Optimist, Rose Colored Glasses" blah blah...BUT I thought the refs were pretty poor last night. Clemson seemed to be hand checking our guards all night. Now I don't think it should be like the NBA where every tickytack touch is called but Clemson really seemed to be reaching in and hand checking at pretty much mid-court especially in the first half. I am probably biased. And that call on Vasquez, where he elbowed Smith was BS. That was a vital call.

Obviously, the refs didn't cost us the game, we played like crap.
    • mightyterps
we have a 5 guard rotation. our 2 sub. guards gave us more then expected the last few games. sunday they didn't. again we got killed on the boards. and our sharpshooter lm was defensed very well. we are not a dominating team. we need alot of elements to go right for us to look very good. our 2 strongest passers had a horrid game at the same time. maybe we were not as good as we looked before and hopefully not as bad as we looked last night.
    • PT
Completely agree with Ricksterps that this "indicative of the program" talk is so old and repetitive. This game was flat out strange. MD had 26 turnovers and could have won it. Clemson shot 31% and won the game. They shot 59% from the line and won. The game was ugly, plain and simple. There was no rhythm at all for either team. Like many, I was amazed they had a chance to take the game.

I'm not giving them a pass. They played awful. They looked rattled early and got taken out of the game. Fundamentals were absent and frankly they missed some bunnies that could have made the difference. But this doesn't end the season by any means. We lost on the road again. I believe ACC teams are like 17-27 on the road this season (or something like that...can't remember the exact stat they flashed up). No games are going to be easy. That being said, I'm so sick of losing to Clemson.

Maybe we got a little spoiled by the last two games. I'll admit I got a little too amped up. But they are still in a good position at 4-2.
    • aholla3
      Totally agree.

We played one of the top 5-6 teams in the ACC, on the road, played incredibly bad, and could have very well won the game if 2-3 plays went a different way.

I like the way we're heading and we will bounce back from this.

I remember a team 9 years ago that got booed off the court at Cole after losing to Florida State, and it looked like they might not even make the tournament. We all know how that season turned out.

Weve got a similar type of leadership on this team that we did with Juan and co. and while this loss hurts it doesnt make our season. Theres a lot of basketball left to play.
    • Seneca3
I completely agree that this loss doesn't define our season. They have plenty more chances to redeem themselves. It's just scary that this team's success is dependent upon one of the most fickle 'stars' I've ever seen. I'm not going to rehash all the stats, but 9 TO's to 2 assists is pathetic. Everyone complained about his performance in the Wake game, but he was far worse today.
    • Ricksterps
I guess I didn't see the game the same as some others. I have blasted GV in the past when he played stupid but today's game was just a matter of him having an off night. I didn't think he forced shots--passes yes, shots no.

All of our guards had a bad night. Every damn one of them. I was hoping one of them would catch fire but it just didn't happen.

The whole "this is indicative of what is wrong with our program" after every loss is repetitive, unperceptive and just boring. This team's story hasn't been written yet. Let's wait until they actually blow up their season before we make final judgement.

This is the first poor performance of the ACC season. EVERY team is going to have them. If they come back and win against FSU then this is a blip on the radar. If we come up with another stinker then we have issues.
    • eddienj
The positive is that we were in the game, on the road, even though we played horribly. Clemson shot 31%. This tells me our defensive system is working. No one has shot well against us lately.

This is not a "bad loss". Outside of Terpland, Clemson was expected to win. BUT, we lost this game because of careless turnovers. Yeah Clemson D'ed us up. But so do all good teams. We have a backcourt with two seniors who have played significant minutes as soon as they stepped on campus. They should've done better. They should've cherished the rock better.

This is the first game in awhile where I don't think we were better prepared than the opponent. It sure looked like there wasn't enough time given to breaking the press in practice last week.

Our margin of error just got smaller. We need to beat FSU. A split on the road at two tough places is a successful road trip. A win against FSU and we can forget about this game.

jadams5214 and all Soupers - I call you attention to okbowlers post on the Clems Day Thread . It was the last post on that thread a few minutes ago. No one's wanting to get our Terps off the hook. They played poorly because Clemson had their "ticket punched".
Didn't you read my earlier comments. The ACC is a slugfest. It's the good, the bad and the ugly this year. NC just lost their 4th conference game to VA.......bad. Miami who we punished beat VT. This loss doesn't define our season.

      okbowler - You done good.
    • okaybowler
      Thanks for the shout, Ger.

I think the point you are trying to make is that some people look at a Terps win as the Terps fault and a Terps loss as the Terps fault, and fail to credit another team.

I'd also like to reiterate Gregs point that, for previous Terps teams, this would have been a 20 point loss.

      FLst = must win.
    • jadams5214
Gerry - your optimism is unfailing even when presented with a Terp performance like today's and you should be commended for that. It's not so easy to remain positive when seeing the Terps play as unexpected and unexplainable game as they did today.

A senior laden team with experienced ball handlers, plenty of time to prepare and that has been coached against the press in practice for almost 4 years doesn't come out and commit 26 turnovers while scoring a putrid 53 points.

Clemson was missing their top presser and valuable guard in Stitt. Booker was coming off an illness and was rendered ineffective by a Terp defense that held Clemson to 30% shooting. Playing that kind of defense has to result in wins doesn't it? It's not as if Clemson created some new press that the Terps could not possibly contend with. It's not as if this team isn't experienced enough to adjust and overcome a basic press after facing them multitudes of times over the years.

Giving Clemson credit for this win simply lets the Terps off the hook. The facts are that the Terps failed once again to get a big win and build some breathing room in the latest of several tense seasons. There is no one to blame for that other than Gary for having the team so unprepared and unable to adjust and the Senior leaders who played as freshman today.

There is ample time left to turn this into a memorable season, but the Terps need to capitalize on this chance instead of regressing. They have plenty of time once again to prepare for FSU in yet another must win game. Let's hope this team that returned 4 of 5 starters and added a phenomenal freshman to a group that made the NCAA 2nd round doesn't fall apart and have yet another season end in disappointment...
    • Gregg
Hey, I forgot when Gary told the team to turn the ball over 26 times. When did Gary tell certain players to make dumb passes, miss layups and not catch passes thrown right to them? I forgot to ask somebody why Gary decided NOT to tell the players that Clemson likes to press and will play tough defense. Oh, I know, Gary definitely told the guys not to box out Grant all night long. Man, I wonder why our coach decided that it was time to lose a game, I mean since they did not prepare for an opponent. You think he spent the week sitting on his ass looking at his National Championship trophy. He's only coached 1,000 freakin games. How could he have so much faith in seniors? They've only played over 100 games in college after all. Enough on Gary already. What does the guy have to do?????
    • jadams5214
Gregg no one said Gary TOLD the team to play poorly and turn the ball over. It's just that logic dictates that a coach has to share blame when their team plays such horrid basketball just as they receive praise when they play well. Gary receives plenty of praise when the Terps shine even though he doesn't make the shots or play the defense so it goes both ways.

The primary responsibilties of a college coach are to recruit, design effective schemes and properly motivate the team to play well. If a senior laden team comes out after several days of pratice and reviewing film and plays as if they are all freshman who have never played against a basic press defense then of course the coach has to bear responsibility for that. It's one thing to not have the talent to compete, get beaten by a miracle shot or some other fluke --- but to come out unprepared and play as if the veteran Terps had no idea the press was coming is another story altogether.

Gary will hopefully have this team prepared and fired up for FSU. He realizes the pressure that he and the program are under. If the Terps fail to reach the NCAA tourney with a veteran team returning 4 of 5 starters and adding a solid freshman inside presence, especially when the ACC is down and ripe for the taking --- then he knows that he will face some tough questions for which he wouldn't have a jusitifiable answer.
    • GERRY
Some of you are so (blatantly) good at criticizing your own team (?) and fail miserably
      at crediting the victor.

jadams5214 -"there is no reason for it yet again". Read on.

Clemson outplayed us and exploited our weaknesses. We got killed on the Boards. We had no answer for their penetration and we couldn't score in the hole. They were better than we were .....tonight.

Some of you enjoy telling us it's raining when we are standing in a puddle with umbrella's.

Let's stop the whining and hope the Terps learn from this, make adjustments and regroup. Personally, I'd like to see the following starting line up:

Mosely, JW, LM, GV and Cliff Tucker. YUP. It's time to shake up the rotation.

I believe you luv our Terps as much as we do. Just show it. Be objective.
    • LJT98
      Shut up.
    • NYMets9631
what are your early thoughts on the FSU game?
    • jadams5214
It's still mind boggling to think that the Terps managed to commit 26 turnovers. This is against a Clemson team that Gary mentioned was missing their best presser in Stitt.

This is NOT a Terp team with freshman handling the ball consistently. These Terps have 2 seniors at the starting guard positions and upper classmen backing them up. Gary is a pressing coach and most assuredly should have his team ready for a team that employs the same strategy. And the Terps had plenty of time to get ready for this game.

There is absolutely ZERO excuse for Gary Williams and a veteran ball handling team come out and commit 26 turnovers. No excuse to put up a putrid 53 points in a conference game. No excuse to totally choke today when the signs of a prosperous beginning to the season were right there. Now it's back to sweating each game as they become must wins with losses such as this.

An utter failure today by Gary and the Terps and there is no reason for it yet again...
    • jadams5214
Well this is unfortunately the type of Terp performance that Gary and the team have delivered far too often the last several years.

All of the signs were there --- the Terps were playing great basketball and building a strong conference season. They had the chance today for a huge road win to start conference play at 5-1. They were well rested and ostensibly ready to play. However they come out and commit 26 turnovers and blow another costly game.

How can this veteran team come out and play such horrible offense? GV was terrible that goes without saying but he had plenty of help. The other senior leaders in Hayes and Milbourne were equally horrid. The extra shooting Mosley said would carry him resulted in yet another 3 for 8 performance. It's hard to fathom that Clemson barely shoots 30% and WINS the game!

The Terps managed to bring themselves down from prosperity once again. Every time they build up momentum and have a chance to get some breathing room they absolutely choke and put up games like today.

The season is far from over but of course now FSU is pretty much a must win game. The Terps have only themselves to blame for being in this position YET AGAIN after another horrid game. Gary and the senior laden Terps have once again falied to deliver...
    • GERRY
Very good "critique" Gregg . You nailed it with the 26 TO's. Difficult to argue any of it. Most teams with 26 TO's will lose. Didn't see it coming with our guys. We better figure it out and fix it before FSU.

GV's 2 early fouls put the team in "troubled state". We are a different team when he's on the bench....early. Yes, we went on a 6-0 run and pulled to 14-16 but then Bowie in for GV is on a 2 on 1 and he leaves his feet to pass and gets the freaking charge. You can't be a guard on a 2 on 1 and pass in the air 15-20 feet from the bucket. That was a key play. Dino's 4 quick points was a positve (much needed from him) spurt but then
he puts his stupd hat on. We've said it for 3.5 years..."if only Hayes could create his shot he'd be so much better". The D realizes his "disability" and simply needs to "feint" a move to him and he'll pass off. Our offensive play was rudely disrupted by Clemson's D overplaying, out-hustling and out-gunning our guards. They are 9th in the league at 3's and like many other opponents, hurt us on the 3 because we know we will challenge them to make them. One Clemson player made a 3 and that made him 3-22 on the freaking year.
I can't understand why Bowie gets the nod over CT off the bench. CT can be explosive while Bowie contributes in other ways. If CT makes his first shot.....watch out. If he misses, he's retreats a bit.

This year the ACC is the good, the bad and the ugly. It's a slugfest and some "gym rats" are landing "haymakers". Can't recall seeing this kind of parity. It's like to stay ugly
      until some team get traction.

FSU will be difficult to beat at home,,,, just like most other teams are at home. The good teams will overcome that. Win or lose .....your strengths are revealed and a teams weaknesses are exposed. Expect other teams to turn up the heat on our
ball handlers and (continue) to exploit our shoddy perimeter D. In fairness, our perimeter D against NCStae was outstanding but NCState is not Clemson. Yet again, another opponets player has a "career night" against us as was the case with Jerai.

Can't understand why we didn't zone them in the 2nd half. Seriously, that generally stops the penetration (they killed us on that) tends to stifle the 3-game and allows us time to help down low. Am I missing something? Hey....go easy now...you know I'm sensitive.

      Your move.
      Go Terps
    • DiamondbackRuss
Oh, and while I've got love for Oliver Purnell, I'm sick of losing to Clemson. Clemson has now won seven of nine over Maryland including the last three in a row.
    • Chrs0049- CALM DOWN. Gregg wrote that and he has not been as critical of Vazquez as most people on this site. As far as I can tell, Gregg did blame everyone. He listed every starter but Williams and also blamed the bench. Isn't that what you wanted?
    • DiamondbackRuss
It's kinda scary when you're on the road and you have 26 TOs, you have more TO's than FGM, your opponent attempts 17 more shots than you, your three leaders are having off games (for various reasons) and yet you still had a chance to win this game with 2 minutes left.

To quote Gary: "They didn't beat us They shot 31%. I'll take 31% against anyone".

Hopefully the team will bounce back from this like they did after the Wm & Mary loss and go on another 5-1 run.

      First up, FSU.
    • Chrs0049
Everyone played like complete crap with the obvious exception of Williams. You can't (check that you SHOULDN'T) single out anyone for this loss over anyone else. EVERYONE contributed equally to this loss. It would be great if we could get past the point where we have to read the same recycled 5 paragraphs of GV venom everytime we lose. Your point was made two years ago, we get it
    • Gregg
What point are you getting at Chrs0049?? I don't think I've ever written about GV taking himself out of a game with 2 early fouls. Can't remember the last time that's happened. I was clear in saying we would have been far better off if he would have been on the floor in the 1st half. Our offense would have run a bit more smooth. Did I bitch about shot selection, selfishness, or anything like that?? Nope.
    • DiamondbackRuss
      Look at this craziness:
