Vasquez Ranked #2 By Sporting News

Sporting News says that the Lion of Caracas is the second best shooting guard in the country.  Now you would think that they would have something nice to say about Greivis.  Instead we get the following blurb:

For a guy who doesn’t make many 3s, he has tried a lot of them — because the Terps have needed somebody to try something. They should be more complete this season, allowing Vasquez to be more judicious.

And the back-handed compliment award goes to…..

What does a guy have to do to get something nice written about him?  Here we have writer Mike DeCourcy proclaiming that GV is second to only one shooting guard in the nation and the only comment DeCourcy can muster is that Greivis can’t hit threes.  If so, I humbly ask, why is Greivis the second best SG in the country?  Perhaps DeCourcy could tell his readers what he likes about Vasquez? Honestly, is that too much to ask?

Jeremy, you've smoked me out of hiding. I don't know if Greivis Vasquez, whom I love like the son I never had, is the second-best shooting guard or anything else in the country (physical limitations are physical limitations), but he's surely about to be the ACC Player of the Year. DeCourcy has a point, maybe poorly expressed, but the fact is that fewer of Greivis's passes are going to bounce off the hands of big men this year, and with Mosley and Tucker and Bowie all maturing, he'll be hitting guys on drives to the basket and seeing guys like Mosley actually finish the play. Watch Greivis's number of shots go down and his assists go up, since he's got to play to his strengths in this, his last year to make an impression on the NBA and his last--and by far his best--chance to bring back some kind of meaningful banner to hang in the Comcast Center.

Kaze, who completes me, is back! You had me at hello, Kaze. You had me at hello.
    • CT
Did you guys know that, for the first time in recent memory, the university is offering hoops season tickets to the general public?
    • KV
Yep. Got something in the mail yesterday.
    • Ricksterps
Well, GV can't hit the three. It is hard to argue with that. What he can do is drive in the lane to score and pass. He has great body control and long arms, just ask UNC. They couldn't stop him.

He can't leap out of the gym nor is he super quick. He is just a player so people have a tough time believing he is that good. This writer doesn't even know why he is the second best SG in the country and he ranked him there. He also has a bit of a target on his chest from his machismo. If we win a lot of games GV will get his due. If we don't he will get the blame. Fair or not, that's how it's going to be this year.

Good to see you back Kaze!
    • I agree that obviously Greivis is not a sharpshooter. My point was that if you are ranking him #2, then perhaps you should highlight what he is good at. He will definitely improve this year simply because the supporting cast will be better.
    • talaya7
Per GV - "I'm a Point Guard, dang it!!"

      And so he is.....

Any mag that takes the Terp's starting PG, and makes him the second best SG in the nation is obviously confused. I'm with Jeremy.
    • gbx79
and consistently inconsistent. at least we know DeCourcy sees GV as a top 10 point, no shooting, no... ah what the hell, he's a top 10 guard.

CT , They actually offered a very limited amount last year, maybe a few hundred in total. This year is there are more seats available, probably three percent of the Comcast total capacity is unsold at the time. These are the uppermost seats on the sides and behind the basket. They have moved all the Terp club members down from those sections into better seats (BTW they do a real good job of trying to improve the TC members seats every year). I think they will sell most of these seats.
The AD is less concerned with the basketball sales than they are with football, whose attendance has steadily declined since 2004 coinciding with the football team going 30-30 during that period against Div 1-A teams. Their suite sales effort has really dragged behind, almost all of the big booster's went for the mezzanine seat deal instead.
The basketball falloff is more easily explained by the economy then the football, which has been declining for 5 years. When your looking to cut back, a $600 expenditure per season seat is an easy one to cut, especially when almost all the games are on TV locally.

Maybe he is not the second best shooting guard in the country, but he is the first best point guard in the country!
    • Jacob
I hope they're on to something.
    • johnnyrhodesscholar
I agree with all the comments above, but have to emphasize...Mike DeCourcy is a freakin idiot. I am basing this all on one article, but why in God's name would you create a list of the nation's best shooting guards and include several players who are not predominantly shooting guards. Hey Sporting News, please give me a job...Chris Cooley is the 2nd best Fullback in the NFL, Alex Rodriguez is a top 5 shortstop, and Alex Ovechkin is the 3rd best center in the NHL.
    • idkwid
Give the writer a break, DeCourcy is the second best political writer in the country.
    • Tsnmike
I don't think anyone could argue against the idea that Greivis has bounced back and forth between guard positions several times. It's hard to rank guys like him and Scottie Reynolds and Evan Turner -- who could be ranked at 3 or 4 different spots . I placed Greivis at the 2 because he has been MD's primary scorer. Ultimately, it allowed him to be placed higher; he would not have been 2 on the PG list.
I mentioned his low 3pt numbers by way of saying I think his percentages will improve as there is more talent around him, not to knock him in any way.
    • Ricksterps
Trust me, we will take you ranking him #2 even if you didn't praise the hell out of him in your comments. I don't think he will disappoint this year.

      Thanks

Reading those quotes from his webpage, it doesn't appear he got the memo about everything being smoothed over between the teams.

What a bunch of girls..."keep my name outcha mouth"="Suzie keeps talking about me!"

Grow-up idiots. Two fights in 24 hours and not one kid disciplined doesn't look good for the university. That's for sure.

If a similiar incident happened at Maryland their would be a big investigation and surely suspensions would be handed down. At an insular place like Kansas it seems like the school and even the local authorities are all trying to play down the incident. We need Prisbell to go to Lawrence and stir up some trouble.
    • TerpFanInVB
GV reminds me of Miles Simon when I was a grad student at UofA. Not fast, quick, or could shoot lights out. However, he could do many things good, and when he decided no one could guard him at the F/T line, he won Lute's NC.

In the link below, click on Washington Post Live and then click on Gary Williams pic on the right hand side. Good stuff. GO TERPS!

Do you think we have any shot at all of landing Harris? You know more about the recruiting game than I do for sure but I don't think there is a chance in hell he comes to Maryland.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Color me doubtful. I've been saying he's a long shot all along for the Terps, but UMD is recruiting him so I keep posting info as I get it and get the okay to post. Terps coaches seem to like their chances with Harris. Clearly the coaches know something DBR doesn't :)
    • Ricksterps
I was asking in case you knew something I didn't :)

I have no problem with the coaches going after this kid until the end. You can't win if you don't play.
    • DiamondbackRuss
My bad, I misunderstood. I thought you were asking for my opinion. I'm not sitting on anything factual info regarding Tobias Harris. However, on Gary's trip to NYC for the fundraiser, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that he trekked to Long Island for another visit with Harris.
    • Ricksterps
You had it right, that's exactly what I was asking. You have good vibes on this stuff just wanted to see if you were as pessimistic as me on him landing at UMD :)
    • DiamondbackRuss
At this point, I don't see it happening. But last night I had a dream that I was reading Zagsblog and he had a story about Harris cutting down his list to UConn, UK, Louisville, Maryland, Tennessee and Syracuse.
    • Terplaw
      Greivis is not a SG....he's a PG
    • EdDC
Some guy wrote in on the Post site that Burney has quit the team, cuz of injuries. Is that true? Is a 'ship freed up?
    • DiamondbackRuss
Yes and yes. But Rome is graduating and word is he'll be a graduate assistant for the team.
    • DiamondbackRuss
The Terrence Jones in-home didn't happen last night. Gary was in NYC for a fund raiser. Don't know how this scheduling conflict happened or when/if Gary's in-home visit will be rescheduled.
    • by the way, I have to say that I am impressed that Mike DeCourcy of the Sporting News clarified his remarks from the article in the comments section here. I guess he knows where Terp fans hang out! In case you missed it, re-read Tsnmike's comment above.

Montrose Christian work out video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0X1j2Z-LiXE

The three high major players in the video are: Josh Hairston (committed to Duke), Terrence Ross (committed to Maryland), and Justin Anderson (Top 5 sophomore in the nation).

And just for old times sake...the NCAA is still investigating Lance Stephenson's amateur status.

Yes, it was noble of DeCourcy to post here and minorly impresive that Turtle Soup got his attention. (We'll know Turtle Soup has hit the big time when GW feels the need to post.)

I still disagree with DeCourcy's logic. GV is the Terps' PG. It's been that way for a season and a half. GV even played PG for Venezuala at the Olympics and again this summer, so there is really no doubt about it. GV is a PG. PG is - arguably - the most important player on a team. How are fans supposed to make balanced pre-season evaluations between players and teams if they are being mis-informed? They can't! How can DeCourcy himself evaluate teams when he doesn't recognize that GV's PG generalship was a major factor behind a team with mediocre personell beating UNC and Michigan State. GV deserves props as a PG. DeCourcy may think it's legitimate for sports writters to play the role of NBA scout to rate GV higher, but to me he's side-stepping his job.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Heck, I'd settle for GW saying something dismissive like "well, if it was on Turtle Soup then you know it must be true". THAT would be awesome!

      http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/terps/bal-sp...

Interesting article about the finances of the athletic dept. Since the football and basketball teams support all other sports, it is very important to RF that people come out to watch the games. Maybe as important as wins.

      I like this last entry..

      • Offering prizes for best "opponent-specific cheer" at games to encourage students not to be lewd. The report said students should be "effective and creative."

Good luck with that. Dudes, guess what?!?! I just won a prize for best oppenent-specific cheer!!! You rock dude!

Is he a point guard? is he a shooting guard? Personally, I have always thought of him as more of a shooting guard. I know he wants to be a point guard...and I suppose he worked on his PG skills over the past 18 months...but I think he has the body of a shooting guard. The thing is this; if he develops his PG skills even more, he becomes so valuable...he just ain't that quick...but neither is Eric Hayes, right?

Speaking of which, I heard that Eric hurt his toe...is this true? That will be a bummer...but I suppose, if Hayes toes changes his game for the worse, it gives either Mosley, Bowie or Tucker (especially Tucker) to cement a place in the starting 5...

I do hope Eric's toes are fine. We need him to show us more of what we saw at the end of last season this year.

So Burney is gone, huh? poor kid. I wish him good luck. Here is hoping that the starting 5 (Hayes, Milbourne, Vas, Gregory & Bowie) shine like hell...and here is hoping that the next 5 in line (Padgett, J-Dub, Tucker, Mosley, JSC & Goins) give us a deep bench...shit, we could be like michigan State, only better.

3 weeks to Midnight Madness! I am so fucking tired of waiting. GO TERPS!
    • Claven
First of all, I'm more interested in how he ranks at the end of the season.

This isn't a knock on Greivis, but this showed me the cupboard nationally is a little bare at SG. It seems like one of those in between years where there aren't many elite returning upperclassman at SG. I suppose this is partly because guards develop earlier and run to the NBA in a hurry. Regardless of the competition, I'm excited to see if he can develop into a more consistent player who can control his passion.
    • DiamondbackRuss
This season would be the first season since his freshman year that he'd have a 'big' that can catch the ball in traffic, be a threat to score inside (which should open up some outside shots for our perimiter players) and set meaningful picks. That should lead to more consistency since he shouldn't feel the need to do it all. But I'm with ya Claven...it's all about the ranking at the end of the season...constant steady improvement is something we'd all applaud.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Andy Katz interviewed Greivis. GOOD STUFF in this interview. It's slightly more than half way down the article though http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entry...

Well, GV isn't a forward that's all I know. I also know that he's a great player who will run this team. However, unlike years past, I don't think this team will go as GV goes. If he has a rough game, there are enough guys on this team that can step up to fill the void. This should make GV even better at whatever position he is playing. I have a good feeling that he knows this and will be able to calm his game to the point of making solid decisions and being an asset every time down the court. Should be a fun year.
