10 Things We Learned From Cal v. Maryland

CHESTNUT HILL, MA - NOVEMBER 29: Da'Rel Scott...
Image by Getty Images via Daylife

    1.  The O-line is going to struggle all year.

Chris Turner had no time to pass. Plain and simple.

    2.  The Defense is disorganized.

How many times did you see Cal receivers running ahead of our CBs?  If the safeties are blitzing and we don’t have the CBs to play man-to-man; then the defensive strategy needs to change.  I still believe that blitzing is key to success in college football; I just wonder if our DBs are able to adjust when we blitz.

    3.  Da’Rel Scott is consistent and reliable.

He’s our best player and should play on Sundays one day.  Coach Franklin needs to dispense with the subtlety and make Scott the focal point of the offense.

    4.  Red-zone execution continues to be a major problem.

Some sequences were simply mind boggling.  Down 14-0 in the first quarter and facing 1st and goal from inside the 5 yard line;  the Terps had Meggett in the backfield instead of Da’Rel Scott? Can someone explain that?  Why would the Terps choose to use their smaller backup during the most important sequence of the game to that point?  I understand that they wanted Meggett in for a few series and that was his turn; but Scott is one of the best backs in the NCAA.  This from a team that struggled mightly in the red zone last year. That move was inexplicable and inexusable.

    5.  Offensive play calling is erratic and the coaches will panic and abandon the game plan at the first sign of trouble.

The Terps ran all over Cal last year.  I understand that we got behind early and our O-line is different from a year ago; but stick with our best weapons.  Da’Rel Scott was successful; but the coaches panicked and went away from the run.  I didn’t see the Terps run on 1st and 2nd down back-to-back at any point in the first half.  I’m sure it happened; but that should be our bread and butter.  Use the run to set up the pass.  We let the defense dictate our play.  That is never a good way to win games.

    6.  Apparently, the delayed QB sneak is our top 3rd down offensive play (they ran it for three consecutive 3rd downs in a row at one point)

Chris Turner is one of the slower QBs we have ever had.  If we can’t protect him on third down, then figure out another way.

    7. There are no leaders on the defensive side of the ball.

What else would explain the blown plays?  Most of the big plays occurred because certain players didn’t realize they were supposed to blitz.  No one was able to settle the unit down.

    8. The WRs have enough talent to get open. Turner doesn’t have the arm strength to get it to them.

Cannon looks to be a rising star.  Too bad he his QB has me longing for a QB with Chad Pennington’s arm strength.

    9.  Miscues (penalties and turnovers) can’t be overcome.  The  Terps will not win with mistakes.  The margin for error is just not there.

This is true of almost any team but I honestly don’t see this team beating any conference opponents in games where the Terps have a negative turnover margin.  The same is true of the penalties.  Any game where we commit the lion’s share; we are sunk. This team is not talented to overcome the mistakes.

    10.  Maryland is a basketball school.

Not that there was any doubt.

Of course he has potential. his athleticism is off the charts. But he has to learn the game, learn to be a football player and not just a great athlete. he's gotta learn to run routes. In the NFL its a must. I wish him well. He was a great Terp and he deserves to succeed.

      Hill to Davis!!!

Great news for Vernon. I just really like the kid and think he has a ton of potential.

They should handle JMU. They have a good football program but this year's edition is pretty young and they are a bit banged up.

      I'm going with 31-10.
    • JohnE
Yep, let the Cal game go and let's see what they've got in them today...I'm rooting for them to get it going because I've got tickets to the Clemson game...I'd hate to see them 0-whatever by Oct 3rd...Go Terps, beat jmu!
    • TERPNESS76
its time to put last week behind us, and focus on jmu. its time finally time for a good tail gate, and even better football. GO TERPS

The Byrd oh excuse me Capital One Field looks great for Saturday's Home Opener with the Maryland flag end zones like last year. The new light up Capital One Logo on the roof looks good. Check out this link and look at 9/10/09 at about 3:33PM for the field before it was covered and at 7:27 pm or later to see the logo glowing.

Is it Capital One Field or Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium? I can't keep track. In fact I thought it was Chevy Chase Bank Field guess they didn't have enough in their wallet LOL

      GO TERPS!

He hasn't been charged with anything and from everything I read I doubt he is ever charged. I think his days in SD are probably limited but he will land a big contract somewhere if he takes care of business this year.

Paging Daniel Snyder, paging Daniel Snyder...we have low hanging, past ripe, often troubled fruit in aisle 10 looking...on sale for $70M over 5 years with $20M garaunteed up front...Pagine Daniel Snyder....
    • Ricksterps
I wouldn't take that bet. Who couldn't see that happening?

I will defend Vernon Davis to the end but Lights-out is on his own. I will be rooting for Hill to Davis all season long.

By the way, the DA just announced no charges will be brought against Shawne.

He leads a lifestyle that we probably can't appreciate.....

I had just read that stuff, unreal. The police report said she had no visible marks on her. This thing isn't going anywhere.

The real question is did he do the lights out dance after he stopped her from getting out the door?
    • DiamondbackRuss
I saw a couple of pics of her in a car with bruising on both of her arms. This situation coming after violating the league's substance policy isn't good for Shawne.
    • DiamondbackRuss
This Tila Tequila/Shawne Merriman situation is crazy, and the story on this blog is EFFIN HILARIOUS http://thesuperficial.com/2009/09/tila_tequila_plot_thickens_now.php

FWIW, reports are that Torrel Harris (Tobias' dad) felt the in-home visit with Calipari went great. They were impressed with his presentation.
    • Tombootom
Hey look, if a guy game in my living room offered me a job, tucked a couple of bundles of hundreds in my couch and introduced me to my son's new "tutor" (you know, just to make sure those SAT scores were just right), I'd be impressed too.

    • Sorry to hear that.
    • DiamondbackRuss
They were also impressed with Georgia Tech's presentation. Face it, just like when visiting the schools the recruit always says the visit went well. Well, except James Padgett who said his UMD visit went "ok".

Torrel Harris says his son will choose a school by the November signing period.
    • Grayson73
IDefensively, I think the front 7 are more to blame than the DBs. They couldn't get any pressure on the QB, leaving the DBs covering too long. They also couldn't stop the run.

Offensively, OL and getting away from our strength (running game) hurt us. The RBs had a good ypc average. I agree that we needed more screen plays to slow down the pass rush.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Gary Williams was elected to the board of directors of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).
    • DiamondbackRuss
Terps watched CJ Leslie work out today at his school and more.
    • idkwid
Shane Walker transferred two years ago for lack of playing time and perceived competition (Dupree, Burney, Osby, Gist). Well, Dupree washed up and left, Burney was battling foot injuries, Osby and Gist were graduating seniors. So Neal, Milbourne and Gregory unexpectedly filled the void, Goins was brought in as a project. If Shane stayed, last year he would have gotten many minutes, instead of sitting out at Loyola, and who knows, this year could even have been competing for a starting slot.
    • terps96
He also ended up tearing his ACL last February.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Miller School held an open gym yesterday (9/9) so coaches could come and watch their players in pick up ball and doing some drills. Terp coaches were there. This is significant because that’s the school that Mychal Parker and Hippolyte Tsafack attend. As far as I can tell, Hipp doesn’t have any in-home visits planned (partly because his parents are in Cameroon). As recently as late July/earl August Hipp was saying that UMD was his lead school and that he planned to take some OVs in September. But now it appears his recruitment is wide open. So we’ll see.

Meanwhile back at Comcast, I continue to get encouraging reports of pick up ball.

Tomorrow Gary goes in-home to meet with CJ Leslie and his family.

Now if the F-Ball team can dodge the flu bug that is traveling thru campus...
    • Care to share info re pick up as ball Comcast?
    • DiamondbackRuss
I need to correct my above post. The in-home meeting isn't with CJ Leslie it's with Damontre Harris. Sorry bout that. Got my recruits mixed up.

The pick up ball reports I've been getting haven't been very earth shattering. Just that Adrian seems a step quicker, Greivis is stronger with the ball and playing with even more confidence. The freshmen are very active, but adjusting to the speed of the game as all freshmen have to do. Padgett goes hard every play after every rebound. Jordan seems to have the hands that we wished Braxton had.
    • Not earth shattering, but good news nevertheless. Thanks.
    • Lupo's
Well we can probably scratch Roscoe Smith off our board. Not that he was our first priority since we need bigs and we already have two 2010 wings. Per Zags, here's a list of the schools that are visiting him in-home:

ROSCOE SMITH HOME VISITS (per his dad)

      Sept. 9 – UConn, Kansas

      Sept. 10 – Georgetown

      Sept. 13 – Florida

      Sept. 16 – UCLA

      Sept. 17 – Duke

      VISITORS TO OAK HILL

UConn, Duke, UCLA, Florida, Georgetown, Memphis, Kansas
    • DiamondbackRuss
Gary and staff have been recruiting all along as if they expected Burney may not ever play again. But it's not a forgone conclusion that they will sign a 5th player in 2010. It depends on who is available/wants to come to UMD. As best as I can tell the class of 2010 is a stronger class for PF's and Centers than the 2011 class, but we'll see. Bottom line is recruiting for 2010 is not over and should have an exciting/drama filled next few months.

      GO TERPS!
    • Well now it appears we have an extra schollie for 2010, and staff have been after bigs of the C/PF type in addition to the Harris/Leslie/Jones type, so no reason to believe we don't have a decent chance for a PF/C type for 2010.
    • ncterpfan
If we don't sign a big for 2010 then all we have playing PF and C for the next two years is Padge, Williams and Gregory? Milbourne isn't a big and Goins is a wannabe Mike Mardesich (i.e stiff). That's scary....

I hope that Williams and Padgett are everything we want them to be but history teaches us that most likely one or both will be a bust (See Walker, Gregory, Burney, Dupree and Gilchrist).

Gregory seems like a great kid but hasn't really proven that he has a high upside....We have alot riding on these freshman.

    • DiamondbackRuss
Hey, Mardesich had great games against North Carolina lol
    • Ricksterps
Since the CAA is 2-0 vs ACC, I'd say we are about a 7 point dog :)
    • DiamondbackRuss
I don't know about Bill & Mary, but isn't Richmond supposed to be a good program. Like regular contenders for the FCS championship (or whatever the Div. I-AA is called these days).
    • mightyterps
does anyone know the point spread for the game saturday?
    • NY_Terp
Any reason on why Burney won't be around? Is it just because he can't get healthy? Is he transferring? It's too bad. We definitely needed his presence and the depth he would have provided. It's a shame it didn't work out.
    • DiamondbackRuss
No official word yet, but my understanding is that Rome will be around. His foot injuries are preventing him from being able to play. Not unexpected but definitely a bummer because by all accounts he's a great kid and we could use his athleticisim. I believe he's quite close to getting his degree. A true student athlete who could become part of the basketball staff.
    • Raj
I heard that Burney won't be playing basketball this coming season. I dont know whether its true or not, but I thought I'd pass it on. If it is true then I wish him the best of luck.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Last night I got a txt around dinner time indicating that Burney would not be on the roster. Bummer because he's a good kid and very athletic. Definitely could have been a big help the past two seasons and this season.

Nothing official from UMD on Burney that I know of at this point in time.

FWIW - Moise Fokou (a 7th round draft pick) made the Philadelpia Eagles 53 man roster....not bad at all for a former walk-on.

Is James McAdoo the offspring of the legendary ex-heal Bob?

      Awesome
    • Ricksterps
Thanks for the updates DBR. I think the pickup of McAdoo takes them out of the Leslie sweepstakes. I could be wrong but I don't know how many of the exact same type of guy you can put on one roster.

Just read that Leslie is knocking all of those site visits out in the next couple of weeks. Should have a decision soon thereafter.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Ricksterps...you're down in NC have you had an opportunity to see CJ play? I'd be interested in your personal observations.

I'm wondering if CJ is a one-and-done guy. Nothing I've read or been told indicates that he is thinking that way, I'm just wondering.
    • Ricksterps
I have not seen him play. I have just heard from State fans and the local high school recruits reporter.

From what I read UNC's interest was lukewarm and it appeared Leslie was more of a "safety school" for them. I don't see him ending up at UMD but as you like to say, we are dealing with 18 year old kids here so who knows.

According to Scout.com, DeMatha's Victor Oladipo commits to Indiana on Saturday. Nice pick up by Tom Crean for the class of 2010. Once the Terps got Ross and then Parker any chance Oladipo was coming to UMD was over & done with...however I sense he never really was too keen on being a Terp.
    • TerpFever
Nobody should be surprised that a young ACC team was blown out by a close to Top 10 team. What is worrisome is how we got to the point where we are starting walkons on the O line. Who has been managing the recruiting cycles?
    • DiamondbackRuss
I don't follow the FB program anywhere near as closely as I do the BB program but someone told me that the Terps are not young, just inexperienced on the OL. He also said that the OL recruited/signed in 2007 has pretty much been a bust or that they're just now getting playing time or some combo of the two. Playing your first game on the road against a top 15 team is true baptism by fire. Hopefully the kids can get it together and improve...IN A HURRY!

      GO TERPS!
    • kcali
On the FB game, it was a poorly coached game. Don't get me wrong, Cal is a very good team, but we didn't have a very good game plan. Coming into this game Friedgen's one main concern was the O line, but when they broke down and were unable to protect Turner there was no Plan B! Instead of hoping maybe the O line will hold them off unsuccessfully yet again, we should have made their rush work in our favor by letting the defense over penetrate and drop quick screens over their heads. I think we'll rebound from this but coaching has to read, recognize and adjust better. We still would have lost, but the embarassment of so many big plays would have been less. And one last thing that bothered me, was it my imagination or did Turner's passes look oddly weak? I know he doesn't have a strong arm, but many of his passes had no zip at all on them and actually looked like they had been tipped because they were so slow and wobbly. I don't remember that from last season.
    • DiamondbackRuss
North Carolina picked up their second verbal commitment for their class of 2011 (basketball). It's 6-9, 205-pound James McAdoo. Currently ranked # 6 overall in the class. He has the athleticisim of Vince Carter in a back-to-the-basket play of a PF.

With the McAdoo commitment and the possible commitment of Harrison Barnes for 2010, this could mean that the Tar Heels would no longer pursue Terrence Jones.

Jeez the Tar Holes just re-effin load.

    • Wheels
I am not sure if you all could tell on TV, but MD fans travel well. Everywhere I went around Berkeley before the game, I saw lots of red. The Cal fans didn't seem to grasp that people would travel 3000 miles to support their team. The Bay area also has a ton of alumni in the area. Needless to say, I think almost all of us left about 5 minutes into the 3rd quarter. It was bad. It looked just as bad in person as it did on TV. Maybe worse.

What I noticed was that MD did a really good job in the 1st quarter of protecting Turner. They seemed to have Cal off balance. The penalties killed MD. In the 2nd quater, though, Cal unleashed the hounds. They blitzed relentlessly, and MD couldn't stop it. On the D side, Cal moved the line of scrimmage at least 3 yards on every running play. MD had some busted coverages, too. To tell you the truth, I thought MD would blitz more. In fact, I didn't really see a lot of blitzing at all. After Best took that 73 yarder to the house, MD sat back in a 2 deep.

Here's the deal. 2 ACC teams lost to 1-AA teams last week from the CAA. MD has JMU...from the CAA...up next week. If these kids don't get their chins up, JMU is going to beat them. Turner needs to step up in the locker room this week. If they get down on themselves, this season could get really ugly. Really ugly. Youthful ignorance only lasts until you gain some knowledge. Now these kids know their limits. They need to learn, and that's where coaching comes in.

I am still optimistic on this team. A few breaks, a little momentum, and this team has talent. That O-line needs to get it together. That's the only position group that matters for this team from here on out. Otherwise, Turner will get blown up a la Sam Bradford.
    • hartz
That was a well thought out, informative and even handed post. I was SURE that Greg wrote it. Good work Jerm.
    • Ricksterps
There is an old gambling axiom, a team is never as bad as it looks when it loses nor as good as it looks when it wins. It definitely applies to the first game of the season.

One thing everyone on this site needs to remember, this is the defense we all said we wanted. No more sitting back and dying a slow death. Take some chances and get some turnovers. Well, when the pressure doesn't get there and the QB can make the throw, you get quick TDs. I would still much rather play an aggressive style of D. We just saw an entire game of the downside to that style D.

As to the question of whether it's coaching or personnel, you will see that play out as the season goes along. If they don't get better, it's coaching.

I'm not giving up on these kids yet, let's hope they don't either.
    • DiamondbackRuss
They need to be ready for JMU. That team has speed and they're physical. They will not back down from UMD. Coaches will earn their paycheck this week.

Meanwhile here's a Tobias Harris update courtesy of Zagsblog:

      http://www.zagsblog.com/2009/09/06/harris-could-decide-after-home-visits/
    • eddienj
Point-forward huh? That's interesting. He could put us over the top. But maybe with Harris we will have problems in that 2010 class with only one rock to share among a bunch of scorers. But #5 in the entire class. That's just too enticing. He maybe be worth it even if it means someone else ends up transferring a couple of years down the road.
    • TERPNESS76
Last night was a disaster. But I'm not throwing in the towel just yet. The team knows what they need to work on, both sides of the ball now. Younger players will only gain from this point, and I'm sure each game will bring improvement. leaders will start to stand out as this young team starts to gel together, and they start to gain confidence. Remember last year with all the preseason excitement, we started out terrible the first two games, then started to play as a unit. I see the same thing happening this season as well. I'm not saying were going to win 10 games, but the terps will have a respectable season.
    • Terplaw
I can't figure out whether it's the lack of proper coaching or the lack of star players on this team....sigh

Were we simply outskilled or outcoached?
    • eddienj
Under Ralph, our recruiting classes seem to get better and better and our performance on the field keeps getting worse and worse. We are on national TV very few times, and almost every time the last few years we get spanked thoroughly. I can't wait to see Greivis' mug on my TV screen again screaming and hollering at who knows what.
