Gary Williams – Quote of the Year

Dan Steinberg at the WaPo has summarized an extensive interview that Gary Williams gave on ESPN’s 980 AM yesterday afternoon.  Here’s what Gary had to say about recruiting:

“The penalty that the Alabama football team got, for instance; they have to forfeit games, ok? And they get probation for three years or whatever it is. That has nothing to do with what you’re gonna do this year. You can go to bowl games, you can play on TV. When we got our sanctions in 1990 we could not play on live television, we could not to go to the NCAA tournament for two years, we lost three scholarships and we had to give back a ton of money. And so basically they took the legs out of our program, because you can’t recruit players to the ACC without television, NCAA Tournament hopes, things like that.”

“I don’t know, I’m a little concerned. I don’t want to sound like the old head (coach), like things aren’t the way they used to be, but something has got to be done. Because you look at the teams this year that were very successful, a couple of them have been outed for what they did. And next year, when it comes time for college basketball to start again, they’ll talk about certain coaches as being great recruiters that I know cheat, you know. And I could be a great recruiter if I was giving kids money, or if I was changing grades on a kid, I’d be a great recruiter, but that’s where it is right now.”

Clearly, as Steinberg later alludes, Gary is talking specifically about Calipari; but we all know he is a dirt bag so that is not news.  For me, Gary’s criticism of the ongoing national disgrace that is the NCAA’s “selective” rules enforcement and sanctions procedure is significant.  I don’t know of any other NCAA coach with the balls to call out the governing body that rules the sport in such a direct way.

I admire Coach Williams’ courage for making these statements.  The NCAA has been poisoned by money and that has clouded their ability to punish “big time” schools that violate the rules because they represent millions of dollars in revenue.

Steinberg goes on to say that Gary should produce the evidence.  That is ridiculous.  Gary Williams is a basketball coach not a private investigator.  His first priority is to win basketball games, not collect evidence on cheaters.  Coaches like Gary know about these violations because when they walk into a recruit’s living room; they hear about what other coaches are willing to do to get that recruit’s services.  Good luck producing hard evidence from that conversation.

I fear for college sports.  The NCAA will soon be forced to decide between enforcing the rules and PUNISHING violators, or turning basketball and football players into professionals.  Hanging onto this myth of amateur athletics is damaging the integrity of the sport because member institutions get away with flouting the rules.

I remember 1990 and our sanctions.  Today, those violations wouldn’t even get a slap on the wrist.

As always, thanks for the information DBR.
    • talaya7
Thanks for the updates, DBR. I get buried in the details of the teams, but it's cool to get an understanding of how the recruiting process works.

Question - Is there any conversation between GW (or the other coaches) and the players? For example, someone like Stoglin or T. Ross (who have already committed), can GW tell him things like, "you need to work on laying the ball with your left hand," or other such tidbits that they see? Or, conversely, can a player spot a coach and ask him a question - "What is a hoya, coach?"
    • Ricksterps
Thanks for all those updates DBR. It gives us a good view into the recruiting priorities on Gary and Co. Let's see if that hard work pays off with Terrence Jones.

      PEACH JAM UPDATE #8

Last update from the first day.

He's not coming to UMD but Will Barton went the eff off in his game. Scored 40 points and had 18 rebounds in a double overtime win.
    • DiamondbackRuss
      PEACH JAM UPDATE #7

      Team Takeover beat Houston Hoops.

Gary and Rob checked out ACR's game against Georgia Stars. There's a couple 2011 guys on Georgia Stars that they were evaluating as well as keeping up on Tobias Harris and Hippolyte Tsafack.

Gary then went to watch Terrence Jones and his I-5 Elite team take on Boo Williams Summer League.

Seems as if everywhere Terrence Jones goes Gary is there. Sometimes Gary, Rob and Chuck.

Without a doubt he's the Terps top priority of all the players that are at the NIKE Peach Jam.

      PEACH JAM UPDATE #6

Sorry guys, it appears that some of the matchups in my 5th update are not accurate. Houston Hoops is acaully playing Team Takeover. Which pits Terps big man target Alex Kirk (Houson Hoops) and a new target 6-foot 11 Matt Gorski against each other.

      PEACH JAM UPDATE #5

      Evening matchups involving Terp targets:

All Ohio Red (OH) vs. Team Final (PA)
NY Gauchos (NY) vs. Boo Williams Summer League
Oakland Soldiers (CA) vs. I‐5 Elite (OR)
Georgia Stars (GA) vs. Albany City Rocks (NY)
Team Florida (FL) vs. Arkansas Wings (AR)
Louisiana Select (LA) vs. Houston Hoops (TX)
Nike Baltimore Elite (MD) vs. Team Takeover (DC)

      PEACH JAM REPORT #4

Terps evaluated a couple of kids on the Southern Kings AAU squad. Shannon Scott and Julian Royal. Both are class of 2011 kids.

Scott is Charlie Scott's son and a highly ranked PG who's specialty is penetrating and kicking out. He caught the Terps eye at the It Takes 5ive adidas Classic last week. He's got offers from Clemson, Georgia Tech, Oregon State, USC and Xavier.

Royal is a 6-foot 7 185lb foward that plays inside and outside at the current level.

Next round of games starts in just over an hour.
    • DiamondbackRuss
      PEACH JAM REPORT #3

Team Takover Wins in a rout. Michael Gbinije led the way. Gary now watching new big man target, Alex Kirk's team. I believe this is the first time Gary has seen the 6-foot 11 big man play. This is Gary's third game since 9am.

Virtually every other coach is watching Team Final in action. Team Final won the TOC and the Rumble in the Bronx and features Michael Gilchrist and Rakeem Christmas as well as 2011 SG/Terp Target Trevor Cooney.
    • DiamondbackRuss
      PEACH JAM REPORT #2

Albany City Rocks rallies to beat I-5. Terrence Jones not much of a factor in the 2nd half. Gary and Rob are now watching Team Takover which features Michael Gbinije and Victor Oladipo. Chuck D is watching the Boo Williams game.
    • DiamondbackRuss
      PEACH JAM REPORT #1

It's halftime of the I-5 Elite vs Albany City Rocks game. I-5 Elite up by ten, Terrence Jones has at least 12 points. Hipp has not played much in the first half.

Gary, Rob Ehsan, and Chuck D are at the game evaluating talent. And they're not alone. John Tompson III, Paul Hewitt, Huggy Bear, Josh Pastner and other coaches are watching this game too.
    • DiamondbackRuss
I should be getting txt messages from the Peach Jam tomorrow from a fellow Terp. As I get them (if I'm near a computer) I'll post them.

I spoke to Albany City Rocks Director and coach of the 17U team, Jim Hart today. He said Hippolyte likes UMD but he cautioned me that he (Hart) is not that involved with his recruitment. He also told me that I-5 Elite's Terrence Jones is "the real deal. But, we'll have something for him!"

ACR has several D-I forwards in Tobias Harris, Hippolyte Tsafack and Will Regan. All with varying degrees of skill sets so it will be interesting indeed to see who gets the best of who.
    • NYMets9631
awesome info DBR...I feel better now knowing that Lance has pleaded guilty. Perhaps the staff knew but I'm glad he's away from us and his baggage now. Hopefully we can land Parker and one of Jones/Leslie/Johnson or Kirk sometime soon!
    • DiamondbackRuss
So much for clearing your name lol. Lance Stephenson (I know but it's slow) pleads guilty. He agreed to perform to three days of community service and seek counseling. I bet his wrist is in a cast after that hard slap.
    • DiamondbackRuss
It appears that Jin Soo Kim will become Jin Soo Choi. Supposedly he's gone back and forth between the two names in the past. Although I'd gotten used to typing JSK. BUT it will probably mean a new wave of jersey purchases by students on campus.
    • GERRY
DBR - I am going to be in Augusta Ga. just across the river from N. Augusta SC that week. Any idea where the Peach Jam is going to be.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Gerry, I belive all games are held at the Riverview Activity Center. Find Gary or one of the Terps assistants and go to the games they are at and you'll get an idea who the top priorities are.

Two Sunday morning games of note are:

I-5 Elite, with Terrence Jones vs. Albany City Rocks with Hippolyte Tsafack and Tobias Harris. Also on the ACR team are former Terp targets Taran Buie and Will Regan. That game is at 9am.

Team Takeover with class of 2011 Michael Gbinije and class of 2010 Victor Oladipo vs. Spiece Indy Heat. That game is scheduled for 10:15am.
    • Chuck Woolery
      DBR;

      - Any tasty morsels on the recruiting front apart from what you've already contributed? Your a man with an ear to the vine, so I'd like to hear any "top secret" rumors.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Shhhhh, Jordan Williams should be on campus this weekend to enroll and start the S.T.E.P. program. That's just between you and me Chuck. :)

Things should pick up in the next few days. A major AAU event called the Peach Jam in North Agusta, SC will be starting on 7/12. It's one of the most prestigious Nike AAU events so top Nike travel teams/talent will be playing including several Terp targets.

Albany City Rocks with Tobias Harris and Hippolyte Tsafack. All Ohio Red, which I think Mychal Parker is now playing with. Team Takeover, I-5 Elite which I think is Terrence Jones' team. Plus others.

There's also the Kentucky Hoopfest in Louisville that's going on now, but I'm not sure if any Terp targets are playing in that.

On July 22nd several Nike and Adidas events kickd off in Vegas.

Then July 29th-31st it's the AAU Nationals in Orlando and DBR will be in attendance for that.

      Jordan Crawford from Xavier.

I heard it was a two handed dunk that drew lots of ooohs and aaahs.

DBR, do you see Lubick as a potential starting 4 type or more of a reserve? Neal was a reserve through most of his career; might have even been one last year if we had more quality bigs in our line-up. Dave did us proud last year, however I would still have seen him more as a quality backup than a starter if our talent had been any better.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Lubick would compete for starters minutes at virtually any program and depending on a program's front court situation he'd compete to start. Okaybowler is right about Neal's injuries, many people over look that.

However, today the director of the New England Playaz AAU, says that Nate Lubick has not de-committed and that his verbal to GU is solid.

I've yet to see a quote from Lubick to corroborate his AAU director.
    • okaybowler
Neal was injured his soph and jr years. He could have played more if not for that.

Interesting article on Fridge. He is hinting at staying past his contract which would trigger a 1 mil payout to Franklin. Yow says they wouldn't pay that and "the coaches would have to work something out". Fridge ain't making that payment I can assure you. Boosters maybe...

Just an odd article in general.
    • DiamondbackRuss
There has been a de-commitment over in Hoya-Saxa land.

      http://w3.nbebasketball.com/2009/07/09/lubick-d...

At the NBA Camp in Virginia observers felt he'd be a solid player for the Hoyas. He finished strong at the rim with two handed dunks, passed and shot well while showing off solid fundamentals. As for setting picks (something you have to do in the flex) he's capable of picking in the low post or away from the cup as a forward.

Think, a much more athletic and taller version of Dave Neal.

UMD was interested in him and he has local ties with an uncle in the CP area. But the kid verballed to Georgetown in October 2008. Virginia had offered but they now have Regan. Michigan had offered but they now have Evan Smotrycz.

Hopefully the Terps will POUNCE on this opportunity. Lubick played on the same AAU team as Jordan Williams.
    • Chuck Woolery
He's taking Flinstone Vitamins I presume?

      DBR,

I'm just not a fan of the smaller PG. I think as the game has evolved they are a defensive liability. Sure there are 100's of examples that probably invalidate my contention.
    • Ricksterps
5'10 is a bit small but the little guys are en vogue right not in the NBA. Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Steve Nash...

Some of those guys are a bit taller (don't believe nba.com) but they are mostly smaller quick guys. As Mark said, he could end up being 6'0-6'2 by the time he is 18.
    • markmax33
He's probably still growing...he's probably 16 or 17 right now.
    • JohnE
Agree Ricksterps. GV needs to take 500 shots a day to get his stroke, then go out and be the consumate team player this year. NBA scouts will pay attention. If he tries to impress them outside the team concept, it will more than likely reinforce what they already think about him.
    • Ricksterps
Let's hope GV doesn't fall victim to trying too hard to impress the NBA in his senior year. I saw comments like "He needs to show he can be a spot up shooter". Let's hope he doesn't go back to forcing up shots like he did when he was a sophomore. I thought he made huge strides in his decision making last season. I would hate to see him fall back trying to show the scouts he can fill it up.

Maryland recruiting has really changed this year. I can't remember the last time we went after this many guys. Casting a wide net can also backfire if all the kids you are recruiting don't feel "special".
    • DiamondbackRuss
Agreed on Greivis and the NBA.

I sense that the "right" recruits are being recruited hardest and know how much UMD wants them (Terrence Jones, Mychal Parker, Hippo Tsafack, James Johnson). Terps really like Coleman and he's a stud but his academics are an issue, may need to reclassify as 2011.
    • Chuck Woolery
5-10 PG is too small IMO.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Well brace yourself because Gary is also interested in Cezar Guerrero from Bellflower, CA. He's like a 5-foot 11 inch Greivis. Tremendous ball handler, motor always on, lots of heart. Can force things at times. He was one of the most talked about guards at the recent Nike Hoop Jamboree. UMD, UCLA, Arizona, Notre Dame and USC all are interested.

There was a Keith Booth sighting on the recruiting trail and he wasn't in B-More. Keith was in Philadelphia at a Reebok event evaluating class of 2011 PG Sterling Gibbs. Gibbs is 5-10 and is a pure PG who runs the offense, plays intelligently and will be a highly recruited athlete. He's got that Jersey toughness. Thus far Gibbs sports offers from Indiana, Pitt (his brother plays there), Rutgers and Seton Hall. UMD, Villanova, Virginia and Va Tech have shown interest but haven't offered him yet.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Mychal Parker's visit to Kentucky has not taken place yet but Parker told a Kentucky b-ball mag that, "things are developing good with Kentucky. I'm getting to know coach Calipari and coach Orlando (Antigua) a little better. I hope to get to talk to them some more a little later down the line. I hope they keep recruiting me hard because I'm real interested in them."

Additionally Parker seems real interested in UCLA too.
    • okaybowler
Interesting, DBR. Hopefully, he doesn't fall for Cal's smoke & mirrors.

From Rivals yesterday: Four-star forward Mychal Parker said Maryland is at the top of his list with Virginia, Miami and Kentucky following in that order. All but Kentucky has offered. Arkansas and USC have offered and Alabama and Georgia Tech are showing interest.

Here are a couple of links I stumbled across with notes/observations of players from the King City Classic. The website is a Big East basketball site so they play up those schools and recruits but there are some Terp targets at this event. Like:

      Tobias Harris
      Terrence Jones

Concerning our current players, I'm wondering if anyone has an update on what Bowie, Tucker and Mosley are doing this summer? As three of our more athetic players, if they elevate their games next season, we might really something going for us.

I think we pretty much know what GV, EH, and LM will give us, albeit I hope they improve on their games as well this summer. The other three however, IMO, give us the best chance to jump back up near the top in the ACC. About the only thing consistent AB, CT, and SM have given us is inconsistency so far. We get flashes of their potential, but nothing on a sustained basis. What a great thing it would be if at least two them showed up next fall with an ACC-level game, the kind that merits consideration for third or even second team ACC honors.

2010 recruits in the ESPN top 100 from the Insidemdsports article:

      Terrence Jones #15
      Mychal Parker #16
      Tobias Harris #19
      Jonathan Graham #61
      Alex Kirk #76

3 guys in the top 20. Will 2010 be the year we finally get a top 20 player?
    • Any word on how Stoglin did?
    • DiamondbackRuss
Not yet, but I did hear the Mychal Parker had 27 points in one game. Made 7 3-point shots.
    • DiamondbackRuss
At the adidas it takes 5ive Classic it appears that DC Assault, Team Takeover and Stoglin's Pump and Run Elite teams all won their pool play. Gary was seen making the rounds as was Calipari, Huggins, Roy Williams, John Thompson III and several assistant coaches from other schools.

Interesting tidbit, this is an adidas sponsored event and it seems that most of UMD's targets play on Nike sponsored teams. However, Team Takeover (Nike) somehow got into this event. Something tells me they are not going to get many calls lol

Reports indicate that the star power for this event is lower than expected because the LeBron James Skills Academy is going on at the same time in Akron. The campers are a who's-who of 2010, 2011 and even some 2012 guys.

Greivis Vasquez is one of a handful of college guys at the LeBron camp.
    • Ricksterps
Thanks again for the great updates DBR. Much appreciated.
    • DiamondbackRuss
No problem.  The latest info I have is that DC Assault and Terrell Stoglin’s Double Pump teams have made it to the final four of the Adidas It Takes 5ive Classic and will face off this morning in about 2 hours.  This will be a good match up for Stoglin as DC Assault has Duke commits Tyler Thornton and Josh Hairston (if they’re not at LeBron’s camp) on their roster and I think Notre Dame commit Eric Atkins too .  DC Assault had a difficult draw, they had to play the Nashville Celtics in the first round and had to play the Atlanta Celtics to get to the final four.

insidemdsports.com gives an excellent evaluation of all the 2010 and some of the 2011 recruits that Maryland is targeting. It lists all their rankings on the 3 major sites, lists the camps and tourneys that theyll be at, along with their possible suitors and chances to be Terps.

Some clarification on the July evaluation period:

The first Evaluation Period goes from July 6-15, while the second period goes from July 22-31. Those are the only two timeslots of the summer that the NCAA allows coaches to watch AAU tournaments.

NCAA rules state that coaches can't host unofficial visitors during the month of July, so while the UMD staff will make a lot of progress in learning what players it wants to seriously recruit, barring a surprise there likely won't be much forward movement in the recruitments until August.

The NCAA only allows three coaches on the road at a time, so I'm expecting Gary, Chuck and Rob will be the coaches on the road.
    • talaya7
You probably just meant it as a throw away comment, but why are you figuring Gary, Chuck & Rob are the coaches on the road? What about Mr. Booth?
    • DiamondbackRuss
Nope, not a throw away at all. In the past Keith hasn't traveled too much. He primarily recruits Baltimore, although he did go up to Delaware to watch 2011 recruit Trevor Cooney. Also, in the past he's been on campus in the summer tending to the incoming freshmen.

Is there a place AAU box scores?
    • DiamondbackRuss
Not that I'm aware of. Typically I'm not interested in who won or lost rather how our targets play.
    • markmax33
Right that is my point. I don't care who won or lost, but I want to see who Stoglin matched up with, how many assists or points he scored against this or that recruit. The box score doesn't tell you everything, but knowing JWill got 17 REBS and 20 Points in an AAU would be nice, especially against a Duke recruit!
    • DiamondbackRuss
My bad, I misunderstood. Typically, other than an article written about some kid(s) during the event, there will be some stats that come out after an event is over.

The smaller regional events can have 60-100 teams, but a major national event like the 5ive Classic, or the Peach Jam for example could have close to 200 teams participating. Box scores for each game are unlikely, but would be awesome.

The open/evaluation period is here and Division I coaches are on the road including Gary Williams. He's been spotted in Cincy at the "it takes 5ive Classic" an Addidas AAU event featuring: DC Assault, Team Takeover, Triple Threat, Pump-n-Run/Double Pump.

Terrell Stoglin among other Terp targets are playing in this event.

Other coaches spotted at the event include: Pitino, Calipari, Rick Barnes, Mike Brey, Johnny Dawkins, Sean Miller and many more.

Pat Forde from ESPN is there and you can follow him for updates.

After watching "gunning for that number one spot" I started using the term, "dramastically" all the time....
    • I saw "gunning for that number 1 spot" and it is a good documentary. If you are looking for insight into Lance Stephenson's character, you won't really find any. The player's profiled in this documentary are an elite group to be sure. The majority are in the NBA now (Love, Jennings, Bayless, Beasley, Donte Greene) and the rest are stars in the NCAA (Singler). Stephenson is the only who hasn't made the national scene. he was also the only sophomore at the time of the filming. If he is anywhere near as good as the other players, then he is a can't miss prospect. This is movie is why I was so high on Born Ready coming to College Park.

I guess everyone has lost intereset and Lance Stephenson signing with Cinncinati is not news

      NCAA selection process rule change

The selection committee will no longer weigh the last 12 games of the season more than the early season. They said it was never meant to be a strong factor in the selection process.

That has been my beef the last few seasons. It was becoming WAY too big a factor in the selection process. Teams that played just god awful the first part of the season were being given a total pass. Other teams that had played great ball all season were too severely penalized. Good change.

The McNair death is just another tragedy. No matter what his relationship was with that woman, he didn't deserve to have his life taken at such an early age. Just another sad episode of people not keeping things in perspective.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Not sure how I feel about that selection process news. One one hand I've always felt that the committee should be evaluating how a team played during the entire season. On the other hand, unless you're a mid-major or low-major, the last 12 games of the season are usually your toughest because they are conference games.

This could take away the incentive for hi-majors to schedule games against mid-majors or play in tournaments like Maui.
    • aholla3
Actually I think it will force more team to play in high level preseason tourneys and have games against mid majors. Since the last 12 games of the year mean as much as the early part of the year, those games will be weighed just as much. Unlike before the process changed when pre season games werent valued at all really.

Has anyone seen 'Gunnin' For That #1 Spot', the documentary with Lance Stephenson and a bunch of others while they were in HS (LS was only a Soph when it was made)? I noticed it's now on Hulu (http://www.hulu.com/watch/79440/gunnin-for-that...) and wondering if it's worth watching.

I wonder if Gary is pursuing a media (or as Ali G calls it, meedja) strategy here. He clearly thinks that the media doesn’t do its job, especially given last year’s running battle with the WaPo. After every NCAA scandal, people in the media always say things like “We heard rumors” or “People around the program were talking about this for months.” Everyone knows but no one reports.

Maybe Gary thinks that by bringing it up he is challenging them to do their jobs. Instead, both sides (meedja and Gary) sit and stare at each other saying:

-“I know something but won’t tell you.”
-“Oh yeah, I know what you know but won’t tell you what I know that you already know.”
      -“You first.”
      -“No, you first.”

Everyone knows what is going on but won’t take the first shot. They’re all waiting for the other guy to do it. He's also pissed off, so that's part of it, too.
    • Eddie
Some very good points Wheels. I think winning/losing has something to do with it. The reader or fan doesn't want to hear negative things when they are winning. No one likes a party pooper. But when you're losing, the reader is very open to criticism. Someone or something has to be blamed. For example, WaPo was on a crusade against Gary and they felt justified because Gary's teams were going to the NIT. They have largely shut up after last season's success.

The same thing applies to Calipari. The SEC is very down right now as compared to years past. There are no dominant programs like their were before. He can basically buy an AAU all-star team, throw a ball onto the court and win alot of games. He knows that as long as he wins his supporters will always outweigh those who criticize his methods. But when and if he starts losing, the media will then find it OK to crticize him and in Calipari's case that will include bringing out the skeletons in his closet.
    • Ricksterps
Very interesting comments on this thread. Working at law firms has taught me nothing is a slam dunk in the legal process. To be a slander case (spoken word is slander, written is libel) you have to say false statements with malice. In other words you have to also prove intent to harm in order to win a slander case. Hard to do but with 12 on the jury anything can happen.

Those statements are Gary being Gary. Coaches are usually very hesitant to call out another coach. Probably for very good reason. He is tired of being ripped for recruiting while other coaches play fast and loose with the rules and get good kids.

Wheels is probably right that it doesn't do him any good to make those type of statements. The flip side is Gary does his best work with a giant boulder of a chip on his shoulder.

Someone help me out w/ Pilgrim here: I've seen the highlights and kid's got game, but he didn't get much run last year w/ KY right? Wasn't KY the same team whose coach was on the chopping block the whole year and needed every win he could get? If Pilgrim was that much of a difference maker, why didn't he play for a team that didn't even make the tournament?
    • idkwid
he had to sit out a year as a transfer form Hampton

Scout and Rivals came out with new 2010 recruit rankings. Terrence Ross dropped a little in both rankings I believe, probably just because he wasnt at the top 100 camp, in which some people really showed their stuff and got moved up because of it. One person was Justin Coleman, who is now a 5 star on scout and #20 overall.

DBR, any deeper insight into this Matt Pilgrim kid? Would he really help us next year, or would we be better off saving the schollie for 2010 class?
    • DiamondbackRuss
Supposedly he narrowed down his choices to UMD and Oklahoma State. And yes he would really help us in '09-'10. Patrick Patterson at UK called him "a beast" when he played against him in pick up games.
    • Can Pilgrim play next year, or will the NCAA make him sit another year?
    • DiamondbackRuss
Once he selects a school he'll have to ask the ncaa for a waiver. He's got a great case for being allowed to play immediately but with the ncaa u neva truly know.
    • JohnE
Here's the one thing I'd add to the discussion concering cheating in the college ranks. I'd much rather do the recruiting process right, aka by the rules, and struggle to make it back up the mountain of success; then to cheat for some sort of a short lived triumph, and god forbid, tainted crystal in the Comcast foyer. The fall from grace is just not worth it. It never is.
    • DiamondbackRuss
I'm with ya on that JohnE. $ome $hools will do the dirty but the risk isn't worth it IMO. U$C basketball is in a world of hurt and for what? A one-and-done player that got them to the sweet sixteen? Please. Even U$F got in the gray area with Gilchrist's trainer/video operator. But the NBA really needs to get rid of the current age limit that led to the situation college b-ball is in now.
    • Wheels
Cheating is not working? Tell that to Coach Cal! Do you really think that USC will be hit with anywhere near the same kinds of penalties that MD got hit with? Doubtful even though their football team has also committed major infractions.

I by no means advocate cheating and take great pride in Gary for playing clean; however, where in the long run in the NCAA does cheating not pay? If it didn't pay, people wouldn't do it.

Also, how does the age limit factor into this? This type of cheating happened before the age limit all over the NCAA universe (see Football, Alabama or Bozeman, Todd). The NCAA should make all scholarships binding 2 year commitments (like signing bonuses in corporate America...you have to repay them if you leave sooner than the agreed upon time). Why wait for the NBA to do its dirty work? The NBA only cares about the age limit to the extent that they can control labor costs, so they do not share the NCAA's care or worries about quality of play. 2 year scholarship commitments with a repay claus will force all of the 1 and done types into the JuCo or overseas ranks.

I haven't talked about it much but 2011 recruiting is heating up. Some 2011 targets were on campus recently for the Terps Elite Camp.

The Terps have targeted some highly ranked recruits in that class according to Scout such as:

14 Michael Gbinije (if Mychal Parker drags out his recruitment the Terps should go HARD at this kid)
      19 P.J. Hairston
      23 Kyle Wiltjer (He's 6-foot-8, 200lbs with an 8 foot reach)
      29 Jordan Goodman
30 Trevor Cooney (I've posted about him in another thread, one of the best SG's in the class of 2011)
      32 Quinn Cook
      37 Jabari Brown
      39 Mikael Hopkins
      42 Malcolm Gilbert

Some of the above named targets have not been offered by UMD at this time but their performance on the summer AAU circuit is their chance to change that.
    • gbx79
Are you sure Cooney isn't headed to Cincy? I hear they'll have a scholly available. He could call himself Born After.

there is no libel/slander as Gary did not directly accuse Calipari. It might have been inferred by reporter but not direct accusation was made.
      Go Gary HOF Baby!
    • Eddie
GARYLAND. I love that man. History will not be kind to John Calipari. As soon as he is out of the game the vultures will come in droves. The reason they don't already is because everyone fears his own ass. Calipari will have a bad ending. Bad guys usually do.
    • Claven
I'm not a lawyer, but I believe to claim slander/libel you have to prove the accuser to be wrong. Hence, it would only be in Calipari's interest to sue if he was willing to open up and prove that Gary's comments are libelous. Given that everyone knows Calipari is a scumbag, he is just better off not commenting. As a parallel, Henry Kissenger never sued Christopher Hitchens over "The Trial of Henry Kissenger." Kissenger was better off just not discussing his days in the White House.

As for "irritating" I'm glad we are still recognized as a relevant team and fanbase. We might not be the top team that others take down. But I still enjoy creating rivalries with top teams. Its as though we are done making dook's life miserable because they just aren't good enough for our vitriol any longer. "Not our rival"? Yeah, you don't rate for my hatred.
    • gbx79
Gary also stated in that interview that "there's more cheating in college sports now than ever".
To me, this was Steinberg's chance not to bite the hand that fed him. Yeh I know that WaPo and Gary are at odds, and that every sports journalist would love to get the details on NCAA cheaters (without having to do the dirty work), but Gary served up free ink yet Steinberg just twisted the knife a little harder. This one time Steinberg could have just reported Gary's comments straight up and let the readers draw their own conclusions. Calling Gary out to provide those details was ceremonial at best, knowing that Gary would never name names.
I tend to agree in principle with Wheels. Why make the "I know it but can't say it" comments, knowing that they would raise eyebrows, even if it needs to be said? I admire Gary for never backing down from what he feels is right, but those comments might have been better discussed off the record.

      It's ALL about the BENJAMINS!!

Like power (as Lord Acton keenly observed), money corrupts people absolutely and blindly. And, cheating is the most evident example of both sentiments on Power and Money.

This is why I stated the NCAA is the second most powerful cartel - too many damn rules and regulations that can end an entire college athletic program (see posting in Matt Pilgrim). In effect, it propagates cheating for money and power. For instance, CBS spent what $1Bn for March Madness a few years ago. The Diamond Network wants Duke, UNC, UCLA, Kentucky, Indiana, and Kansas in the tournament each year. It wants the Cindy stories of the mid-majors. It wants the NCAA to make sure its partnership is fruitful for Westinghouse in profits (commercials). Look at the BCS, does NCAA D-1 University Presidents and the Association itself want a playoff? NCAA D-1 FB wants a successful Notre Dame, USC, Oklahoma, Penn State, and Wisconsin programs - not on probation. Yet, a playoff can mean more money, with cheating closely behind. Now are both NCAA major presidents, athletic directors and organization itself afraid of any improper activities to assure the alumni, fans, and boosters of a top-notch, high quality program, based on cheating? Remember SMU in the 1980s... its FB program was killed because of that notion and recently returned in the past five years or so. Yet, D-1a, D2, and D3 all have playoffs, yet are there cheating scandals at those levels? Yes…

Cheaters never win, yet some how and some way in the short run, it does have immediate benefits – championships, more money for athletic program, and alike. Then in the long run, cheaters end up losing, getting caught up in covering up the scandal. The price is vacating victories, titles, records, loss of scholarships or media rights, and possible the death penalty. Memphis again will have another downturn with potential huge penalties. And cheating doesn’t only impact sports? Look at politics, the other sporting game in American culture – such as the Sanford and Clinton sex scandals. Yet Cal the slick will still move on and reshape Kentucky into a leading program that CBS desires in tournament. Perhaps for every Cal slick, there’s a Kelvin Sampson who is still banned for four years as his appeal was denied by the NCAA for too many telephone calls to recruits.

Changing of grades and other student issues? The 1990 sanctions radically changed our entire athletic program and impacted on how the U recruits both students-athletes and general students. Those changes led to our top-20 ranking as a leading research institution. Look at the enrollment process at Maryland now. Any current Terp student is paying for the name, whether s/he enrolled as a frosh or transfer. Another athletic scandal hurts major D-1 universities and colleges, look at the enrollment figures post-Len Bias and with the current-day stats. When any coach or athletic officials makes a grade change, it impacts that program negatively as Gary stated on grade changes. Moreover, it also greatly impacts every non-cheating student, period. I, like many of us grads on this site, paid for that name and quality education.

As for cheating in recruiting, GW's correct in his critical observation of the current state and why he treads lightly in recruiting big names and focus more on coaching and teaching, as his mentor Dr. Tom Davis did. Although he’s a Dookie, Jay Bilas stated that there's nothing wrong with running a clean program during one of the televised MD BB games following the WP series in February. That's makes Williams one of elite coaches in the contemporary game - he's a clean, teaching-oriented coach with a strong commitment to his beliefs. No one can take that away from our future hall-of-famer. And for WP to suggest that he name names, that's absolutely ridiculous. Would Roy Williams and Mike K make it a national story for ESPN? Absolutely it would, however, should both name names? What is this - McCarthyism redux in college sports? That's the job of sport journalists - not head and/or assistant coaches. That's why the media has investigative journalism.

Finally, we need to remember the greatest non-sports cheating-themed scandal is Watergate and its meaning on cheating in the 1972 Presidential Election. Here's the link to his August 1974 farewell address. As I often state in my lecture on this topic for my students, cheating isn't worth it in the end - the personal and professional disgrace is often more dangerous and deadly then the desired results. For any cheating student, I take the exam and then email my sup and ve, and then email or call their parents. That's the price for cheating in my class. Was it worth the presidency for Nixon, the sexual affair for Clinton, Sanford and other pols, or for a better grade on a history (or other subject) test? In short, is cheating worth it? Only you can resolve that question. And unfortunately, the NCAA through his monstrous regulations and rules, cheating will always be a stemtic problem.

Sorry for the long rant... but it does send a clear message.
    • Wheels
People do what they're rewarded for doing. That's why and how cheating does work. Look, it's worked for Calipari. He's got a new job, tons of cash, and 87k twitter followers.

Cheating doesn't pay off in your class because you hold them accountable. Since the NCAA can't hold the NCAA accountable, cheating will continue to pay off.
    • DiamondbackRuss
      Try 300,000 twitter followers
    • Wheels
Two points. One, if Gary can't provide evidence, he shouldn't say anything at all. From a legal standpoint, he is opening himself up for defamation of character, libel, and slander-type lawsuits. If it is so clear that he is talking about Calipari and can't back it up, that's trouble. If Gary then goes "Well, I didn't say who, all I'm saying is that I'm just saying...", then he looks like a passive-aggressive old man. The kind we saw with the tempest in a teapot with the WaPo and the Athletic Department. If you're going to man up, then man up. Otherwise, you look like a crybaby. You don't get points for half in-half out.

Second, the only way that the NCAA changes at all is if Congress strips them of their non-profit/tax exempt status. That's it. Why should the NCAA enforce its own rules unless there is some accountability? Why should there be a football playoff? How can the NCAA be accountable for its rules when only the NCAA can enforce those rules? It's a closed circuit. Everyone knows it. Alabama has had like 1 year out of the past 10 where their football team hasn't been on some type probabtion or review; yet they basically lose nothing. The minute the pinhead University presidents fear that the money train will end (hello anti-trust lawsuits), the NCAA will become the most stringent enforcement agency on the planet.

It's beyond me why the national media choses to keep this under wraps. They'll still get their money and even more if this farce is exposed.
    • TerpFever
National media wants their Final 4 access more than they want to actually be journalists. Wilbon, Kornheiser and the rest are making huge amounts of moolah from "covering" pro and college sports. You might find a reporter or two who will upset the apple cart, but most will follow their political brethren and sell out for the $$$ of TV exposure.

I agree, GW does look like a crybaby, but he does every year the Terps get left out of the tournament. But I don't see any legal ramifications. He doesn't name names or make specific allegations. It's the same as saying "You know, a lot of Congress are a bunch of corrupt SOBs, they are getting paid by lobbyists for their votes."
    • Chi-Terp
Oh please. GW has a right to his opinion. Truth is an absolute defense to a slander/libel lawsuit. It is not GW's job to chase after corrupt coaches. He definitely has the right to answer a question even if the answer might rub heads the wrong way. If coach says that he knows that some coaches are paying people money, I believe him...and I don't blame him, given the fact that HE and his team got a bum rap back in 1990.

I just read your quip again. Please!!!
    • Wheels
Yes, Chi-Terp...but you have to provide the evidence to support your claim. Learn to read.
    • markmax33
Gary Williams only talked about issues that had been identified in public on that radio show. He can't talk about facts that the NCAA are investigating? That's not libel. I guess he could have skirted the line when talking about those unnamed players in the voices article but he didn't give enough facts to really draw anything substantial. I bet he has the evidence anyway, if he really needed to back it up. It's just not his job to blow the wistle, although it is pissing him off.
    • Wheels
Mark...you're right. He can talk about his opinion RE Alabama's probation and MD's back in the day. It's the other stuff..."I know it but I can't tell you...I've seen it but can say what I saw or who I saw do it."

Of course, no one is going to actually file a lawsuit; but I don't think this shows Gary as a particularly ballsy guy. To the contrary, I think it shows his Jim Boeheim side. Instead of innuendo or casting aspersions with a nod and a wink-wink, man up if you're pissed off.

In fact, if I worked at the NCAA and heard Gary say this, I'd call him and say "Okay, tell me what you heard and saw."

Now, of course, the NCAA won't do that because they can't police themselves even though they are supposed to in fact police themselves. I understand Gary's frustration and I know he's done it the right way, but do something about it instead of complaining. Maybe he thinks that his public complaints will spark something, but the media is asleep at the switch.
    • DiamondbackRuss
WOW...LOVE IT. Is this Gary Williams 2.0 or something? I like it. The fire still burns red hot within Gary. And he's right. We damn near got the death penalty and for what? Giving a recruit a ride to the bus stop, or a ride to his house?

Now someone wake up Ralph cause after I watched him on ESPN I was ready to go to sleep. Yeesh...lost 90+ pounds and no energy???
    • Ray
What it will take for the NCAA to take notice and action is several key coaches stepping forward and saying enough is enough. As painful as it may seem coaches like Rat Face, Huckleberry Hound ect.. need to back Gary up and then you have a story. Blowing the whistle all alone is difficult. The honorable parts of the coaching profession needs to step up.
    • okaybowler
Ray, LOVE the insult/compliment combo to our esteemed competition. You are totally right though. Gary does have a bit of a curmudgeon reputation. If you got media darlings/great coaches like Roy and Mike, you'd have a national story.
