Take ‘Er Easy There, Matt Pilgrim

As has been widely reported, Matt Pilgrim is visiting Maryland today.  He was/is a junior at Kentucky via Hampton University.  John Calipari just revoked his scholarhip.  Stay classy, Lexington.

I don’t love the idea of getting Kentucky castoffs, but this kid played well against us when we played Hampton.  He has the body to go up against the towers of the ACC and he would likely start immediately.  He has been compared to Al Harrington and has shown up on NBA draft boards.

Before we start high-fiving each other, take a look at his career statistics.  While he did average 11 ppg as a freshman at Hampton; his scoring dipped during his sophomore campaign to 7.7 ppg.  He is a career 30% 3PT shooter which is par for the course with the current MD roster.  Pilgrim’s FT% is dreadful: 45.5% (that’s 71 makes in 156 career attempts).

from what I’ve read Matt Pilgrim reminds me of Jamar Smith.  He’ll get the job done, but we aren’t winning any championships with him in the starting line up.  (Yes, I know we won the ACC title with Jamar Smith as our center).

It’s no guarantee that Pilgrim will come to UMD.  He is a Cincinnati native and the Bearcats and University of Memphis are vying for his services as well.

Hope some of "The Truth's" leadership skills passed on Vazquez. We'll need it.

According to what I just read, courtesy of Drexel University AD and NCAA/org websites, Pilgrim still must sit out for this coming season. It's a 4-4-4 scholarship transfer and D-I basketball doesn't have the exception for that transfer with two rare exceptions. In a nutshell, Hampton U to Kentucky to us, potentially, means he'll sit out unless he's not a junior, as ESPN stats has him currently.

Here's the DU link: http://www.drexeldragons.com/Pdfs/gen/2007/11/2... and for the NCAA: http://www.ncaa.org/wps/ncaa?key=/ncaa/NCAA/Leg.... As I tell my students, find direct, credible sources - nothing hear-say with you're making arguments.

The two rare exceptions are discounted program or class standing of transfer for an athletic scholarship. If Hampton U or Kentucky discontinued basketball, he's automatically eligible - that's the lone exception that I discovered. The loss of a scholarship generally isn't an exception, unless the certifying college or university (new campus) determines academic standing based on class standing from former school. IOW, Pilgrim lost his scholarship by coaches decision; however, he didn't academically. Does he or any one in a similar situation have class standing eligibility? If Maryland Enrollment Services determines he's a junior w/ scholarship eligibility, he's not eligible to play or practice for that season. But he may be able to practice for a semester until he's junior level (if he don't completed his soph year at Kentucky) for that scholarship. It's goes to the am. status. Then, it gets very confusing there-after.

If any can help me (like DBR) with this, it's greatly appreciated. It's been quite a while since I understood NCAA eligibility rules when I majored in sport management. However, I'll still argue he's in-eligible for this season because he's planning to transfer from Kentucky to us (or anyone else) because he's seeking a scholarship for scholarship transfer. If GW declines a scholarship, he may actually be immediately eligible.

If I was a rep in any athletic department or an AD, I'll be more afraid of the NCAA than IRS on its regulations. Behind OPEC, it's my belief the NCAA is a second most powerful cartel.
    • So he loses the scholarship because it was revoked and he still has to sit out a year? No matter where he winds up, that sucks for him. Hardly seems fair.

Then again, coaches like Sampson and Calipari cheat, then bolt and the team and school are left holding the bag, so who ever said the NCAA was fair?

Interesting info my man. You've done far more research than I care to lol. I can only assume that if UMD agreed to the visit (he contacted the Terps not the other way around) and has intrest in him they must have reason to believe he could play right away. Because the Terps probably need him more this upcoming season than the following season.

      Thanks DBR for the compliment.

I'm not sure if UMD has offered Matt Pilgrim yet. The visit is still going on so it's hard to say. Just speculation on my part but I'd guess that after meeting with Gary and Gary gets a chance to watch him play some pick up ball with some current Terps today he'll decide if he's going to offer him.
    • I think Pilgrim would be eligible to play right away. If you lose your scholarship; I think you can transfer without sitting out.

FYI - Terps FB to be featured on College Football Live on ESPN/2

Watched it... It's worth the 30 minutes. It basically split DC/MD, featuring both us and Navy, alongside the smaller colleges (Towson, MD-ES, alike). Friedgen was on, talking about the progress of the team and that he lost near 100 pounds with this new dietary program - that's great! From 400 to 300, it's better on his 62-yr old frame. Moreover, it had some interesting sports history on fb players and coaches but failed to mention why the #1 team is determined following the entire season, not the regular, as #3 MD def. #1 TN in 1951. Reminds me of 1974 UM-NCSU ACC final and its aftermath...

Howard stated that we're a 7-5 team which will need its OL to jelly fast if we're over 7 wins and that VT/FSU/CAL will be real tests for us;, whereas, he projects NA, as a solid 8-4 team. Is it an Eaglebank Bowl match-up btwn us and our Rte-50 rivals? Season starts in 3 months.

Glad to see they agree with my assessment posted a few threads ago! Ha!

Based on his stats and now in his junior year academically, Pilgrim will be a bench player for us. I don't see him as a starter. Now does GW waste a 2010-11 'ship on him? He may need to sit out for this coming season. In terms of academics, depending on his transferable credits/major selection, he'll be a senior and a 5th-yr senior when he's eligible for us. If he joins the program, Pilgrim will need to understand his role. Does he (or his father since he was mentioned in Kentucky report) understand?

As for Lance Stephenson, I like to see Padgett take it to his old schoolmate - like the championship game. But, the Bearcats will be better than they were last season in the Big East with his presence. There's no question on BR's talent - it's his maturity at 18/19 as both a person and player.

Does the fact that Pilgrim's making a visit mean that GW has made an offer?

On the one hand - Williams, Padgett, Burney, and Goins are all unknowns. It seems to me that adding another big body, even though it is unclear whether he's got the goods, increases the odds that one or two or three of of these big bodies actually contribute.

On the other hand - Signing Pilgrim burns one of the scholies available for next year's recruiting blitz.

      What to do?

      In Gary I trust.

The Terps still have a scholarship available for this year. And Williams isn't qualified yet.

You're making me nervous there saying Jordan Williams isn't qualified. Is this a potential problem?
    • Mike
If I recall correctly, some time ago someone said (may have been DBR) that he has been admitted to the University, but has not benncleared by the NCAA. I don't know what the normal timing for that would be; whether one would normally expect for that to have occurred by now. DBR, this is your que to comment.
    • DiamondbackRuss
I've been posting that Jordan isn't qualified yet for a few threads Eddie.
Back in May I exchanged emails with someone within the athletic
department, whom I cannot name, and they told me that UMD is working with Jordan to
get him through the process. They expect everything to work out. But he's
not qualified just yet and I'm just reporting wuts up. Hopefully it won't
      drag on much longer.

I am just thinking of the fact that Lance Stephenson is going to play for the Cincinnati BearCats next season...and guess who will be joining Maryland at the MAUI Invitational next season? Yes kids, the Cincinnati Bearcats.

It will be interesting if the Terps get to play the BearCats (with Lance in their line up). Hopefully, Lance will be Born Ready for an ass whooping. Just saying.

I took some glee reading about the potential downfall of these snarky Dookies. Unfortuantely Merriman got caught up in their deceit. Ricksterps anything you hear down there?

I meant to post about that article last Sunday. They are getting a pretty free ride in the local media of course. Blaming it all on the economy. Merriman is suing to get his money back but he will have to stand in line.

It sure seemed like a bunch of arrogant athletes thinking they are as good at business as they are on the court. It's a story that repeats itself all too often.
