    Bye, Bye Wizards

I grew up in Maryland.  Unfortunately for me, that has not been a blessing as a sports fan.  I pull for the Terps (frustrations well documented), Orioles (13 years of misery and counting), the Ravens (my one shining star), and until recently the Wizards/Bullets.

I go way back with the Wizards/Bullets franchise.  I remember Jeff Malone.  I remember Jeff Ruland.  I even remember Steve Colter (vintage geri curl ‘do!) and John “Hot Lunch” Williams.  I’m guessing most Turtle Soup readers that follow the NBA root for the Wizards too.  For those who don’t, allow me to provide you with a quick summary:

    • I was born in 1974.  The Wizards haven’t won 50 games in a season during my lifetime.
    • Since 1978, the Wizards have won exactly 1 playoff series: 2005 vs.  the Bulls (I was at the game 6 clincher!).
    • In a span of three years, the Wizards drafted Mugsey Bogues and Manute Bol.  That’s right. The shortest and tallest players in NBA history. Were they an NBA team or a circus act?
    • In 2004, the NBA Champion Detroit Pistons started three former Wizards/Bullets: Rasheed Wallace, Rip Hamilton, and Ben Wallace.  This is a classic Bullets move: trading away or releasing your best prospects.
    • The only #1 pick in team history was used to select the immortal Kwame Brown in 2001  (Pau Gasol went #3 that year).
    • The team changed their name from the Bullets to the Wizards thereby adopting a mascot that resembled an old man with a white beard and a pointy hat.  (Note:  I would have killed to have been in the board room for this decision.  Did anyone discuss the ramifications of an old man in a robe as the logo?  How that would affect merchandise sales?  Did anyone in the front office ever take a marketing class?)  You can’t make this stuff up.

After reading through that littany of disaster; you’d be hard pressed to argue that Wizards fans aren’t die hards who have been summarily beaten into submission.  Nevertheless, it was hard to not get excited at the prospects for the future when Gilbert Arenas emerged as legitimate superstar in 2005.  Even though I had recently moved to Chicago, I never seriously considered giving up on  my Wizards.

That is until the events of the past week.  The Wizards had the #5 pick in this year’s draft.  With that pick, they could have nabbed Ricky Rubio, a transcendent PG with rare skills.  We are talking about Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Jason Kidd–level passing ability.  As it turned out, the Wizards shipped the pick to Minnesota for two role players: Mike Miller and Randy Foye.  It’s the classic two dimes for a quarter.

I’ve heard the counter-arguments.  The Wizards already have a superstar PG in Gilbert Arenas.  I hate to break it to you, but Arenas is a shoot-first PG and that dog just won’t hunt in the NBA.  Sure, you make the playoffs with a shoot-first PG, but you can’t win a title.  The Wiz should have drafted Rubio and rolled the dice.  They could go small and play Arenas and Rubio together (moving arenas to shooting guard), or they could bring Rubio off the bench (for a few years) and have one of the best second units in the league.  Either way, picking Rubio would have altered the destiny of the team.

Now, it’s back to hoping for mediocrity.  That is why after much consternation; I’m throwing my  support over to Derrick Rose and the Bulls.  I’m tired of pulling for a team with a front office that would be legendary for its ineptitude if not for the LA Clippers.  The Bulls are young and exciting.  They haven’t accomplished anything yet, so I don’t feel like I am jumping on the bandwagon.

In the final analysis, I feel that the Wizards left me and not the other way around.  There is only so much that a fan can put up with and I finally reached my breaking point.   I’ve washed my hands of them.

OK.  Thanks for indulging my NBA diatribe.  From now on, it’s back to the Terps — a team I will never stop supporting.

We sure as hell need a baseball coach. We have been beyond awful for way too long.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Terps are close to hiring a baseball coach.

Men's tennis hire was made and it's Kyle Spencer from Baylor.
    • AMEN
      To Gregg and Jeremy bashers,
It is not the easiest thing to do to bring up Terp topics during off seasons. But cut them a break. We can survive this. Just pop another top. AMEN BROTHER
    • Gregg
Jer, Rubio is going back to Spain rather than play for Minny. The agent doesn't like Minny and did not like Washington. He was not going to play for the Wiz. The Wiz have 6 guys 24 and under.. that's plenty of youth. It was a good deal.

Ok, now I can get back to the Terps. And folks, how hard is it to skip a comment or two if you don't like it. Anyone who has been with us for a while know that 99% of the time we are all Terps all the time. If Jeremy doesn't get things like that off his chest, he could have a coronary. Trust me, it's better for his health to throw down a rant every now and then.
    • turtlepin67
Jeremy, if you wish to post about non-Terp subjects, could you please create a Terps post immediately thereafter, so that UMD relevant information does not have to be added to the former. I haven't lived in the Maryland area in over 30 years, and couldn't care less about the Wizards, Orioles, etc.; yet I have to sift through those discussions to find out that one of our recruits committed to UVA. That would seem to satisfy both factions.
    • I'll vote for that. That way hopefully Terp related material doesn't get mixed in, and I don't have to go through other stuff, which I don't care about.
    • Markmax33
How old are you guys 50+? This doesn't have to be a formal blog, it's not a newspaper, it's a bunch of cool people exchanging ideas. The blog owner controls it...You gotta understand the medium kids...
    • Ricksterps
Sorry for the double post but just read this in the Sun. DBR nailed it on the head when he said Gary is now casting a very wide net in recruiting. Seems to be a new name every week. I guess the only downside to that strategy is it can be used against you in recruiting. Another college can say "they are looking at three guys at your position. They don't really care about you"

I like the new strategy. When you are dealing with 18 year old kids you have to cover your azz. Who knows what they will do.

    • Ricksterps
I'm with DBR, I thought that kid would wind up somewhere other than UMD but not UVA. I don't consider UVA a big threat so it's not that big a deal on that front. Good pickup on their end however.
    • NYMets9631
wow that is kind of dissappointing, but I am encouraged that we will get a decent big out of Jones, CJ, Johnson, Kirk, Harris or Hippo
    • Raj
Dont forget Graham. I actually like him a little more than Hippo... Graham just looks a little more polished to me.
    • DiamondbackRuss
To my knowledge the Terps have not offered a scholarship to Graham yet. He's a great kid with alot of potential. Seems to still be growing taller, but needs to get stronger to play inside in the ACC.

He's battling knee pain (probably due to growth) right now. Hopefully he'll have a good summer on the circuit. He definitely bears watching but Jones and Leslie are higher on the Terps board for forwads. And perhaps Mitchell is ahead of him too.
    • NYMets9631
oh yea thanks...he might be a pretty good get too as a local kid
    • Raj
Back on Terps bball recruiting... Regan just committed to UVA.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Bummer, nothing more to do than wish him well (except 2x a year) and move on. New coach must have made a huge impression on him because I really thought he'd wind up going to Stanford. Good find Raj.

I'm just speaking for myself here but is it natural to root for DC teams AND Baltimore teams? I grew up 30 minutes north of Baltimore and I have been a lifelong Oriole fan even though I haven't lived in the area for 18 years. But I never felt attached to the Bullets, Redskins or the Capitals. I'd cheer for the Blast before those teams. But that's just me I guess.

Jeremy, you won't be able to become a full-fledged Bulls fan. Sure you can cheer for them and go to United Center since that's where you live. But ask yourself this. If the Wizards have a surprising season and are playing the Bulls in the Eastern Conference Semis next year, where will your heart be?
    • DiamondbackRuss
Jeremy, the Bullets/Wizards have won 50 games in your life time.

In the 1978–79 NBA season the Bullets moved to the Atlantic Division, capturing the title in their first season there. They entered the 1979 NBA Playoffs having lost 8 of the final 11 games to finish the regular season at 54–28.
    • NY_Terp
This might not comfort you at all, but personally, I was really only a fan of Rubio and Blake in this draft. I personally thought there was no way Rubio was falling to 5. Ask any scout, GM or analyst, they all said Rubio was gone by 3. Personally I'd rather have Randy Foye and Mike Miller than any of the rookies in this draft, sans Rubion or Blake Griffin.

The wizards felt this help now was important than getting a guy three or four years down the line that could help. We already have plenty of that with the 2 young big guys and Nick Young. I loved Rubio and wanted to see him in a Wiz uni but honestly thought there was no way he was gonna be there at 5, I think partly this is why they made the trade prior to the draft.
    • hartz
You were never anything but a fairweather fan anyway. Good riddance to ya!

BTW - talk about altered destiny: When they were re-doing things they we between the Wizards, The Sea Dogs (?), the Monuments and the Justice. Jesus Fraking Piss Christ!!!! The Washington Monuments is an AWESOME name for a basketball team in DC! The whole nod to tall basketball players is perfect. Ok at LEAST give the ok to the Justice then. I mean sure supreme court and all, but the whole thing of getting Judged on their court would be very good.

I'll never forgive them for the wizards either. Then again- I hate the stupid NBA and all their man-child / unlikeable jerk players anyway. I hope they choke on their stupid names.
    • hartz, I know you are calling me fair weather for something that happened in college (although I can't remember now exactly what); but I think the evidence speaks for itself. I'M AN ORIOLE FAN! How could I possibly be fair weather?

Washington Justice would have been perfect. Every game is played on a court after all. Of course, listening to announcers beat the endless amount of available puns into the ground would get old in about 2.2 seconds.
    • hartz
It might have been something to do with Mayflower trucks, but I don't remember. I am not really serious about the whole fairweather thing. I was just busting b/c you are going to switch to the Bulls or whatever.

I remember the 78 championship team - Hayes, Larry Wright, Bobby Dandridge etc.

That said, Abe Pollin has done a miserable job of running that franchise. He did dupe MJ with his three card Monte though and shaft 'em outta part ownership. What a HOOT!!! As a Terp, I adore seein' a Tarhole get duped. Superfantastic! If Given enough time, I really think MJ could be the contemporary version of Elgin Baylor in running a franchise into the ground.

I'm not really a Caps fan (solely UMD sports here baby) ... but Leonsis clearly has done a better job than Abe did.

I always give Baltimorons so much credit for refusing to become Redskins fans when the Colts left Baltimore. By not rooting for the Skins, Baltimore pretty much locked up the chance to get back into the NFL game. It took DC baseball fans an extra 10 years to get the Nationals (yea, what a prize) because the O's built the perfect stadium right off of 95. They dared DC fans to NOT root for the O's.

Now, I will call shenanigans on you with this Bullets thing. After all, they started as the Baltimore Bullets. When they make the playoffs next year, you'll root for them again. That's what having a lifelong rooting interest does to you. It gets into your blood. You could disown the Bullets no more than you could disown Claven. Lord knows, after my bachelor party, I did try to disown Claven but to no avail. The kid just sticks.
    • Claven,

it will not be easy. I agree. the Bulls will always be a distant 4th to my top three sports loves:
      1. Terps (obviously)
      2. Ravens
      3. Orioles

I'm just giving up on Les Bullez.
    • Ricksterps
      Mike,

Feel free to just not read the posts that don't interest you. I come here to be informed and entertained. This site does both for me.

Do I love every thread started by Gregg or Jeremy? Of course not, that is virtually impossible.

You have been the forum police before, scolding posters for commenting on things not UMD related. Relax and enjoy the posts you like. It is a pretty dead period for UMD football or basketball so we will be going off-topic more this time of year. You know what? It's okay...really

    • Claven
Germ, this isn't going to work. You aren't a Bulls fans and you never will be one. Sure you can root for the current team or say your favorite player is Micheal Jordan like anyone in North Korea. The problem is that they have been too successful for yours and my type of fandom. They don't lend themselves to your all-consuming ups and downs during a season. Nor will them winning a title ever lead to you framing the front page of the Chicago Sun-Times (assuming that's around...and what will fans frame in the future when their team wins a title?). Bulls fans don't have the tragedy of Len Bias, the heartbreaking abandonment the Indianapolis Mayflowers, the disgust with Peter Angelos, the low grade incompetance of Wes Unseld and most importantly Juan the savior (Ray Lewis helps here too). Bulls fans lack anything that could remotely be described as "issues." Winning titles and besting rivals is always great, but its not life or death there. Good luck.

Full disclosure...I have no NBA allegiances but I enjoy watching the flavor of the season in the West.

      Jeremy;

Yes, Turpin was also called "Dinnerbell". I suppose he liked Pot-Pies more than the million(s) dollar guaranteed contract.
    • Grayson73
People are saying that Rubio has elite passing ability that comes around once every 10 years, like JKidd, Magic Johnson. That's high praise for an 18 year old. If they are correct, scary to think how good he'll be when he's 25.
    • okaybowler
He could be good, but its a lot of hyperbole. It's euro-ball, for Pete's sake. Plus, he may not even come to the NBA for 2-3 more years.
    • Mike,

      I have three comments.

      1. There is no Terps news right now. It's off-topic but still MD/DC basketball related. Don't read it if you don't like it.

      2. Regarding soccer, I made a comment underneath a post; I did not dedicate an entire post to soccer.

      3. This is a blog, not a professional newspaper. Jeff Barker is paid to cover the Terps. I'm not. What about any of the current players needed to be said this week? We will have plenty of time to dissect them over the next few months leading up to the season. On the left hand side, I have RSS feeds posting links from the top Terps blogs out there. Look how many have articles that aren't related to the basketball team. It's late June for Pete's sake!
    • talaya7
What took you so long? I gave up on them when they changed their name to be PC. Dumb, dumb, dumb. I'm glad the Redskins fight that malarky.

BTW - Since I agree with your sentiment, I apologize for playing fact-checker, but the Bullets did win 54 games in the 78-79 season, the year after the championship.
    • Talaya- you are right. I forgot about that season. thanks for reminding me. although once in 34 years doesn't look much better than zero in 34 years. it's abject failure any way you slice it.
    • Chuck Woolery

Wilbon referred to John Williams as: John "Dinnerbell" Williams.

Seriously, a guy with a load of talent that literally ate himself out of the league. Wow!
    • wasn't Mel Turpin called Dinnerbell Mel Turpin? He was another Bullet who ate himself out of the league. what a joke of a franchise!
    • terps96
Isn't it John "Hot Plate" Williams? Although "Hot Lunch" sounds funny as well.
    • Mike
Why are you calling this "Turtle Soup"? Might as well change the name to "Alphabet Soup". In the past few days you've continued to talk about Bored alReady, who HOF Gary has said (indirectly) isn't coming to UMCP, professional soccer, and (who cares about) the Washington Bullets, or whatever they're called. If there is nothing to talk about regarding the Terp, then just say nothing. It's okay to do that if there's nothing Terp to talk about. But actually there is something to talk about, and that is the current members of the mens Terp BB team, which Jeff Barker did talk about in the Sun yesterday or the day before. Why not do that on this site?
    • EdtheTerp
Sad for me too. Once the Wiz gave $111 million to Gil and his bad knees, and then extended Antawn until his basketball old age, I am afraid the Wiz are committed to putting on a good show so its great owner can enjoy the team. Eventually Ted Leonsis will come in and build for the future, shooting for a championship.
