    Eliot Williams to Leave Duke

The word is that Williams will be transferring to Memphis to be closer to his dying mother.  That is really sad.  Eliot was definitely an impact player in both regular season Duke victories over MD.  Given his personal trauma, it is hard to rejoice at this news even if it is likely to help the Terps next season.  Williams is a sublime athlete and created match up problems for our slower guards.

It remains to be seen what Coach Krybaby is planning to do to replace Williams on the roster.  I’d be shocked if, as some have speculated, that Lance Stephenson would enter the picture.  Given the character and eligibility questions; I’d think that Duke would steer clear.  However, desperation often creates strange bedfellows; so you never know.

      About Hanbourough (sp?)

He has more skill than he's given credit for, but he also got just about every call in college and scored a lot of baskets off weird trajectory shots that will be swatted in the NBA. And he's 6-8 and doesn't appear capable of guarding power or small forwards. Other than that, he's great. - Dan Wetzel

I never knew that wetzel was this witty.

"Who knows about Bobcats fans. Henderson has a great mid-range game – plus, he's from Duke and we know those guys always pan out in the NBA." – Dan Wetzel

      Ha. Zing.

I am not going to profess to be a draft expert or college B-Ball expert, but gerald henderson at #12 seems high to me. Somebody please either agree with me or show me the error of my ways.

What a week...Ed (hey-oh), Farrah (angel), and now Michael Jackson (hee-hee)...all RIP. My childhood officially died this week:

      Where's the Captain and Coke?

MTV probably wouldn't even exist today without Michael Jackson's music and movies, HUGE loss to the world.

The Thriller video? Or even the Scream video. I think that video had a $7 million budget. Biggest music video budget ever I think.

I might be a bit scared to play against Born Ready (if he suits up for Duke). He might try to go off on a team that let him go. That being said I cannot imagine him suiting up for the Dukies.
    • Harry
I don't think they get paid, I agree what an opportunity for abuse. Calipari would pay his players $50,000 per appearance.

      Talaya,
Its mostly games, some drills and skills. They test and grade the kids on a bunch of skills including things like ability to shift on defense, positioning on rebounds, crossover dribbling. Most of the kids there are pretty good to great and most are in AAU and /or high school programs. But primarily you play games against your age groups with in a few years of each other. Gary was there both days I was there but my son said the main people running it were Keith Booth, Rob Eshan and Troy Wainright plus the counselors and players. He said Gary was there a bunch but would come in and out.
So I would say a good experience worth the money and bonus for my son due to the Maryland angle.

      Thanks.

Follow-up on the curiosity - is this a paying gig for the players? Do Milbourne & Co. make a few bucks or are they getting a class credit? Good for them if they make cash, but that would seem like an easy way for an unscrupulous program to bend rules.
    • If Born Ready is half as divisive as rumors are he might be, I'd love to see him disrupt Duke for a year. But I'd be shocked and fall over dead if Coach K is looking for a guy with his kind of baggage. Then again, I'm a card-carrying idiot.

      Good article:
      http://www.accsports.com/blogs/jim-young/200906...
It boggles the mind that Duke only has two guards and nine scholarship players.
Note how below the article a person writes in, comparing the exit of Johnny Dawkins as assistant coach to the coaching departures that Maryland experienced. I am looking forward to seeing our guys open up a big can of whoop-azz on the Dukies this season.

Am really enjoying this website. So many knowledgeable people here with great information who write intelligently and with humor. It is a big help in coping with Terps b-ball withdrawal. (And that yoga instructor is suh-weet! Her presence is definitely a recruiting bonus.)

Funny...Duke has no legit big men and no guards now...

This article talks about Duke and Lance.

I fully expect Sean Mosley to at least double his offensive output. Let's be honest, he could have been much worse of a shooter both long range and layups, so I think he's been working on that all summer and I hope/expect a much more aggressive and successful offensive player next season.

I have railed on about this before but here is a good example of how unfair the scholarship system in in college sports. These kids are stuck with these schools yet the schools can cut you loose after each year.

It also covers the LOI which is totally one sided. You do not need to sign them and no kid should. It binds you to that school but they can pull it when ever they choose. These presidents of the universities like to claim the high ground with the "student athlete" but the system they have in place is a disgrace.

I ran into Landon Milbourne today when I picked up my son at Gary's B-ball camp.
He said ankle is fine no problems. Also saw Dino, Cliff, Sean and Steve Goins. Cliff said they are running a lot of ball this summer and all is good.
Not much to report but I thought I would get us off the soccer thing.
    • talaya7
      Harryfish,
Kind of off topic, but I've always been curious about the camp. Is it all games or is there lots of teaching, too? Who actually runs activities and drills? Is there any insight that your son shares about the experience? I mean, is he learning about the mechanics of the bounce pass, is he learning the rules, is he learning about the the theory behind zone vs. man-to-man defense or is it a hodgepodge?
    • aholla3
From what Ive heard in the past the camp is kind of weak. Ive heard that Gary is hardly ever there and usually only gives one talk or two. But I could be totally wrong.
    • Eddie
Nice to hear about the boys. Don't you guys feel that out of Mosley and Tucker, one of them will have a real breakout year? My guess is Mosley but I really hope it's Tucker. He has special skills that bring a different dimension to the team.
    • Good move harryfish. Next thing you know we'll be hearing about the chess and shuffleboard tournaments.
    • Harry
      Jeremy,
Dukies into foul trouble is an oxymoron. We kind of have to depend on the refs and we all know that movie.
    • Wheels
I'm not normally a soccer fan, but I really dig the international tournaments. Not so much for the game but for the spectacle of it. If I could, I'd go to South Africa, risk being murdered or mugged, and have a blast just being surrounded by all of the nuts from other countries during the World Cup.

FIFA needs to crack down on sissies acting like they're hurt more than they need to crack down on rough tackles. I always find myself yelling "man up you pansy" whenever I watch those guys flail while trying to draw a card. Totally weak.

Eddie - did you see this regarding Altidore? "Scoring against Spain had special meaning for Altidore, acquired by Villarreal of Spain's La Liga from Major League Soccer and the New York Red Bulls for $10 million last summer. He made only two starts and four substitute appearances during the first half of the season for Villarreal, scoring one goal. Loaned to second division leader Xerez on Jan. 30, he didn't get into a single match.

On Sunday, Altidore had sent a warning to Capdevila.

"He sent me a message and told me that we had to be careful," Capdevila said. "But his Spanish is not so great, so I think he made a mistake."

That's great that he talked some trash in Spanish before the game. Altidore, not Donovan will be our best player by the time 2010 rolls around.
    • Eddie
Just to put the USA win in perspective. The best USA players is probably Landon Donovan. If Donovan was Spanish, he would probably be about the 10th to 15th best midfielder they have. He would never even get close to sniffing the Spanish national team. A monumental upset. How monumental? If you bet the USA to win you would been paid $14.50 for every $1 bet.

Sorry for the soccer posts. No more.
    • Gregg
One quick soccer question for you fanatics. I'm watching that game. One of our better players gets what looked like a bogus red card late in the game. What is the deal with those? 2 matches ago, another one of our guys got what looked like a bogus red card. Can't they go back and look at video later and rescind it when it's clear the defender was going for the ball and it wasn't a 'red card deserved' dangerous play? These refs are suspect to be sure. What's the deal?
    • Eddie
A red card can be appealed. Upon review the red card obviously can't be rescinded because it already happened. The suspension can be reversed if video evidence clearly shows the referee in the wrong. But it will never happen in this case because it's a discretion call. The 3 red cards the USA received in this tournament were all questionable. But players' inexperience also has something to do with it. FIFA is really cracking down on dangerous play and the Confederations Cup is a World Cup tune-up event. The players should know that if they tackle with studs showing they are at the referee's whim. In all 3 cases the players went in with studs up, a definite no-no. Sure the referee made a somewhat harsh call in all 3 cases. But the players shouldn't have put themselves in that position either.

How sweet it must've been for Jozy Altidore. He went to Spain with alot of hype and has rarely seen the field with Villareal. They loaned him out to a lower division team. Then he scores and winner against Spain. That's pretty sweet.
    • jonbruns
I think both the Clark (the first) and the Bradley cards were ridiculous. Fouls, absolutely, but straight reds are really, really harsh. In the case of the Italy game that red basically decided the game. We were playing really well, might even say controlling the game against an out of form Italy. And to play a man down most of the game is tough. This Ref (it is the same ref from the Italy game) seems to be very quick on the red card trigger. I declare shenanigans!

Eddie, yes, very sweet for Altidore. And he scored on his Villareal teamate Capdevila.
    • Seriously, DBR. Terps should be able to exploit that next year given our depth. Let's get those Dukies into foul trouble.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Nolan and Scheyer better be getting into marathon runner type shape because I don't think any of them will see less than 35 min per game. Could Singler and incoming freshman Ryan Kelly may be forced out to the perimeter?
    • ricksterps- I'll change it soon. haha.

by the way, how about the US Soccer team? They beat the #1 team in the world today! 2-0 over Spain. That is an outstanding accomplishment
    • jonbruns
Unbelievable game. That is a huge win. Our backline just hunkered down and we had opportunistic counter-attacks. Just a great game. Great flow. End-to-end. And the right team won!
    • Ricksterps
The word down here is they will leave that 'ship open next year. That also means Duke will have just two guards on the roster.

I hope some UMD news comes out soon. I don't like our lead story to be about Duke.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Williams seems like a good kid that could become a terrific player.
