Born Ready Will Not Suit Up For Terps

Reader, Mr. Cavendish (why the formality?) pointed out in the previous thread that the Baltimore Sun (fifth paragraph after the jump) is reporting that Maryland has ended its recruitment of Lance Stephenson aka Born Ready.

Terp Nation seemed to be divided 50/50 on whether or not we wanted Born Ready.  Personally, I was for it. It’s been so long since Gary landed a bona fide blue chipper out of high school that I was excited more about what BR represented than what he would actually mean for us on the court.

Perhaps that was foolish; but we will never know what would have happened.  As of now, next year’s Terps are currently one player short of a full roster.  It’s possible that Gary will hold the scholarship for 2010; but I think other options may be afoot.

As I’ve documented in the past; the Terps were holding all the cards for getting Lance’s services.  I’m guessing that the Terps must have had good reasons for abandoning the BR sweepstakes.   My sense is that we have not seen the last of the roster moves this summer.

Good story on the Gary/GV relationship.
    • NYMets- good find! This deserves a post of it's own. I'm throwing one together for the occasion.

No problem Jeremy, I do what I can to help the site haha. Wow, that new post really means alot man, thanks! Go Maryland!

DBR can speak to this better than I, but I don't think Gary can comment on his recruiting of BR. Positive or negative, I don't believe Gary is allowed to update any recruiting info at this time.
    • DiamondbackRuss
Today Gary was interviewed on WNST/Baltimore. He covered a variety of topics but he did say that he was “definitely done” recruiting for the class of 2009.

I don't believe he mentioned any particular recruit by name :)

I think if they are 100% out of it he can say they are 100% out of it, I could be wrong though...

I just found an update per the Washington Times that Jermoe Burney is out of his boot and will be X-Rayed on the 23rd of June. If those X-Rays come back favorable, it would be great news as we would have some more depth down low for '09. In the limited amount of time he has played, he has provided some nice dunks and putbacks on offense but has been a major contributor with defense, rebounds, and blocks. That's good stuff and he can definitely help Padgett, Williams, Dino, Goins, and LM.

Did Burney get an operation? I had that same injury and it rebroke on me and always has a tendenacy to do so afterwards. I got a screw in it and I could walk on it 3 days later. They should just put him under the knife and get those feet fixed once and for all.

I guess I just will never be convinced until the words "Lance Stephenson isn't comng" come out of Garys mouth or he actually pops somehwere else. Something about it just feels right to me...

I heard from a big-time booster/alum (that's pretty well connected) that unofficially BR won't be a Terp. Generally, he's pretty darn reliable. I suppose we can all believe or speculate what we want.

Nonetheless, after hearing from him I'd say it's pretty likely this issue is over. NO BR in CP.

Probably not fork ready, but Jeff Barker is normally very consistent with his reportings and his sources check out. Likely a AD source viewing the situation as; A- Court troubles, B- Potential amateur status troubles, C- Grades. Having said that I hope he is wrong this time, as I have said before I would love to have Mr. Stephenson come to Maryland and showcase his talents in the ACC for our beloved Terps.

      Harry,

      Good list!

A will be resolved soon, one way or the other. If it is resolved favorably, then it is removed as an issue, right?

B is a problem if it is determined to be one. Who does this determining? Seems like a process should be followed, and probably already is being followed.

C applies to LS just like anyone else, as it should be.

Bottom line is that LS can't commit until A,B and c are resolved. Is there a good reason to rush to judgment now?

Agree, the leaks mean nothing, unless engineered by the AD office.

I tend to agree with Lee. You still can't put a fork in the BR story cause it ain't done yet.

To be honest the Sun story really doesn't pass the smell test for me. His sources say MD has been out of it for weeks and BRs own father said they were in it ten days ago and that he was in constant contact with the staff. Then the conclusions he draws from Garys comments are him hearing what he wants to hear. If MD wasn't 'in it' Gary would say "we aren't in it. we are not recruiting anyone else, including Lance Stephenson" which he is careful not to say. I have always thought BR wanted to have an announcement that everyone went "_________!!!!! I thought they were out of it!!!!!", this could be the smoke screen before the giant POP!

Whatever happens in recruiting in the upcoming months likely will surprise us all. And I am sure that's the way the Maryland staff would like it. I am convinced that the feeling at Maryland (and elsewhere) is that the less all of us blogger know about who Maryland is recruiting the better off they will be in their efforts. That way, we can't say things or start debates that might in some way effect their efforts to land a particular recruit. Think about Ross and Stoglin, names that appeared out the the blue and were unexpected to say the least. It's funny, really, reading the debates about who we should go after first, etc. and they the knee jerk reaction when someone not being tracked is signed. I am expecting more surprised in the future. It gives me something to look forward to and shows the Maryland staff in working it for next year.

A reason to hold an extra ship for '10.

ESPNU 100 Mychal Parker has Terps at the top

According to ESPN affiliate website www.insideMDsports.com, ESPNU 100 shooting guard Mychal Parker attended Maryland's elite camp over the weekend and came away listing the Terps as his top choice.

"They really are at the top of my list, they're really number one really," Parker said. "I'll make my list in the middle of July but Maryland is in good position now.

The staff was really, really, really, really good. I really enjoyed myself there--coach [Chuck] Driesell, coach [Gary] Williams and coach [Keith] Booth did a really good job." Parker, who is also considering Miami, Clemson, Virginia and N.C. State, Wake Forest and Kentucky, is not expected to make his decision anytime soon.

The Terps are off to a great start in the 2010 class with commitments from two ESPNU 100 prospects, Terrence Ross (Portland, Ore./Montrose Christian) and Terrell Stoglin (Tucson, Ariz./Santa Rita).

GV's decision was probably a basketball/business decision, passing up some immediate bucks for a longer-term benefit after he refines his skills at MD. Nonetheless, it is great to read his perspective, which I'm sure he wholeheartedly believes:

Vasquez said: "It has always been a goal of mine to graduate from the University of Maryland and earn my degree. When I signed a scholarship to come to Maryland, I promised my family back home in Venezuela that I would graduate, and doing so in four years here at Maryland will be a great achievement."

Short-term money is often vastly over-rated.

On BR, I'm OK with this, as long as the decision was in control of the BB program, working jointly with the whole University. I just hope it wasn't another one of those decisions imposed on the BB program from the moral superiority of the AD, as engineered by Yow through the University administration.

We don't know BR, and I haven't read too much about him. Is it automatically assumed that he has the "wrong background" or "wrong upbringing" and is "bad" or has a "bad personality" and can't be helped by some guidance and education? Maybe so, but how is this determined outside court adjudication and normal admission processes?

Some of us may think the latest on GV/BR is a good news/bad news story. I think not - as I mentioned some time ago, BR does not pass the smell test and the program and the school's academic reputation are better off without --- think about it, it's down to basically no school in the country wants a McDonalds five star player -- somebody out there knows something we don't know.

Also, something of a backhanded accomplisment would be to finally get a five star only because no one else wanted him. We are better off.
