Why Maryland Is A Great Job

5/7/2011 12:13:27 PM Lots to contemplate in the post-Gary world and we are less than 48 hours into it.

It looks like we have 10 hours or so before the next significant Sean Miller to Maryland update, so I'd thought I'd start a new thread.

I've been pleasantly surprised at how attractive MD is to the head coaching fraternity.  In my opinion, it's a combination of several factors.

1. Debbie Yow leaving.  I had no idea how poisonous her reign had become.
2. The huge talent base in MD/DC/VA.  Well documented.  No need to recount.
3. Most importantly, UMD is located in a great city.  Let's be honest, most big schools are in the middle of nowhere.  All things being equal, where would you want to live: Lexington, KY or DC metro? What about Bloomington IN?   Exactly.  DC/Balt is better than most big cities for college basketball because the Wizards are so atrocious that there is a massive void left behind.  The Wizards have been so bad for so long that MD has been the best show in town for a long time.  When MD creeps back in to the Top 20; the dormant fan base will explode.

By far, my favorite rumor about the Sean Miller hire is that his wife hates the desert because her allergies are making her life miserable.  She can't breathe.  So, the talk is that Miller wants out so his wife can get her quality of life back.  As an allergy sufferer myself, I know how bad it can get.  It's just funny to think that her sneezing and congestion could be affecting the future of Terps basketball.
