Terps Crush Hokies, 94-71

In the history of Maryland basketball, the Terps have had better ACC openers, but I don't remember them. Granted, Virginia Tech is not Duke, but good teams (dare I say great?) blow out average teams and that's what happened today at the Comcast Center.

What a dominant performance! Watching the game, you never got the sense that the Hokies ever had a chance.  At their best, VT could only hope to trade baskets with the Terps.  Those spurts were infrequent as Maryland killed them from the inside and from the outside.

Surprise starter, Jake Layman, came out of the tunnel like a bolt of lightning on the way to a career high 20 points.  He also rebounded, blocked shots and overall held his own on the defensive end.  He flashed the skill that had recruiters drooling last year.  Arguably, he has been the Terps most disappointing freshman but today he proved to whatever doubters there were that he too will be an impact player for this team.

While Layman came out strong, fellow freshman Seth Allen finished the game well.  Allen led all scorers with 21 points and most of that came after halftime.  His stroke is smooth and he is taking better care of the ball.

As Tim Brandt and Dan Bonner pointed out on several occasions, there were 20 or so NBA scouts in attendance. While our freshman are great, they were at Comcast to see Alex Len.  While he didn't dominate, Len dropped in an easy 16 points and 9 rebs.  He didn't show anything that scouts probably didn't already know but he certainly didn't disappoint.

Wells and Howard were efficient and Faust sat the second half out with an injury. He injured his shoulder in practice this week and he must have aggravated it in the first half.

Overall, we had two things confirmed for us today:

1. This is going to be a fun year. It's impossible to know from game to game which of our 10 rotational players will step up and stand out.
2.  This team is going to be really good.  We all hoped that the early season schedule indicated a good squad and that was confirmed on the court today.

I don't think Maryland will get ranked this week but if they beat Florida State on Wednesday and Miami next weekend, we will crack the top 25 (hopefully for good).

Terps Host Virginia Tech

The Terps have just finished a brutal three-game stretch and came up empty handed.  Not a pelt to speak of.  There were some encouraging moments and some discouraging ones.  Terps hung in against FSU, Temple, and Duke.  In fact, most of those games were close to even with 10 minutes left to play. The Terps collapsed each time.  In my view, [...] Read More »

Terps Squander Stoglin's Mastery

For all intents and purposes, the season is now over.  NIT here we come.  Adrian Bowie, Cliff Tucker, and Sean Mosley have gotten worse as the season has progressed.  They have been terrible in this last stretch of games. Despite their dreadful performances; the Terps were in this game to the end thanks to the dazzling play of Terrell Stoglin.  [...] Read More »

Virginia Tech Thread

Sorry that I'm late getting the thread up; it's been a busy day at the office.  The Terps need to win their games.  That's the bottom line. Maybe tonight's the night they find some momentum.  Who knows?  It's an opportunity to get a little revenge.  Hopefully, the smell of Cliff Tucker's decomposing corpse won't interfere with their play.  We'll fi [...] Read More »

A Victory For The Ages. Terps Win In 2OT

What a game.  Vasquez turned in the best second half I can remember.  He was 11 for 23 in the second half.  He wilted down the stretch (finishing 4-14); but who can blame him?  The man played 48 minutes.Vasquez made some mistakes (that 3pt with 6 seconds left in the first OT being the biggest); but he also found an open Hayes for what should have b [...] Read More »

Virginia Tech Game Thread

After the Terps began the 09-10 season with some disappointing losses in Maui; we all re-calibrated our expectations downward. The Terps were a top 25 in November, but as that quickly faded, selection for the NCAA Tournament became the goal. Because of the lackluster non-conference performance; just about anyone with any authority agreed that 10 AC [...] Read More »

Virginia Tech Thread

Well fans, here we go.Today, the Terps begin in earnest their quest to earn that elusive NCAA bid.  This season has delivered mixed results but the Terps have a chance to right the ship today and set themselves up for a run that could turn the season around. We are seeing signs that the team has rallied around Gary Williams and that is probably just [...] Read More »

Terps vs. Hokies Game Thread

It's been a nice week of basketball talk here on the Soup, and I must say I've got some cautious optimism for the upcoming season.  Like most years, I expect the team to get better as the season goes on when roles are determined and we find out whether Vazquez has decided to be generous to our opponents once again. But with our first exhibition game [...] Read More »

Up Five with 1:20 To Go!

Can a season be defined in one minute and twenty seconds? I think the Terps answered that question on Saturday. Somehow, the Terps grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory by allowing Va Tech to claw back at the end of the game.A win and the Terps are surging. Five straight wins, (including two on the road) and likely a sixth coming against Wake. [...] Read More »
