Terps Crush Hokies, 94-71

In the history of Maryland basketball, the Terps have had better ACC openers, but I don't remember them. Granted, Virginia Tech is not Duke, but good teams (dare I say great?) blow out average teams and that's what happened today at the Comcast Center.

What a dominant performance! Watching the game, you never got the sense that the Hokies ever had a chance.  At their best, VT could only hope to trade baskets with the Terps.  Those spurts were infrequent as Maryland killed them from the inside and from the outside.

Surprise starter, Jake Layman, came out of the tunnel like a bolt of lightning on the way to a career high 20 points.  He also rebounded, blocked shots and overall held his own on the defensive end.  He flashed the skill that had recruiters drooling last year.  Arguably, he has been the Terps most disappointing freshman but today he proved to whatever doubters there were that he too will be an impact player for this team.

While Layman came out strong, fellow freshman Seth Allen finished the game well.  Allen led all scorers with 21 points and most of that came after halftime.  His stroke is smooth and he is taking better care of the ball.

As Tim Brandt and Dan Bonner pointed out on several occasions, there were 20 or so NBA scouts in attendance. While our freshman are great, they were at Comcast to see Alex Len.  While he didn't dominate, Len dropped in an easy 16 points and 9 rebs.  He didn't show anything that scouts probably didn't already know but he certainly didn't disappoint.

Wells and Howard were efficient and Faust sat the second half out with an injury. He injured his shoulder in practice this week and he must have aggravated it in the first half.

Overall, we had two things confirmed for us today:

1. This is going to be a fun year. It's impossible to know from game to game which of our 10 rotational players will step up and stand out.
2.  This team is going to be really good.  We all hoped that the early season schedule indicated a good squad and that was confirmed on the court today.

I don't think Maryland will get ranked this week but if they beat Florida State on Wednesday and Miami next weekend, we will crack the top 25 (hopefully for good).

Terps Escape Duke 21-16; Suckiness Confirmed

"We're not the number of fingers I'm holding up!"      Image by Getty Images via @daylifeSo, who had the under tonight?  Thought so.  Jeez, am I glad I don't bet on sports anymore.  How the Terps offense only mustered 14 points against that defense (7 points came on a Punt Return) is a mystery.  Elon College scored more points against Duke than the [...] Read More »

Phew! Terps Escape Raliegh With A Win

The Terps had every reason to call it quits at halftime tonight. Down 10 points and playing their 3rd game in 5 days; lesser teams would have folded. Gary was able to rally the troops despite the adversity.  In particular, Greivis Vasquez, Jordan Williams, Adrian Bowie, and Dino Gregory all made key plays to lead the comeback.Dino had the block hea [...] Read More »

Terps Bounce Back, Crush Virginia

What Duke game?  Gary Williams said before the game that it was "gut check" time and his Terps came through.  Maryland blew Virginia out of the building.  It wasn't even close.  From the opening tip, the Terps took the game to the Cavaliers.  What's more, there was a workmanlike self-assurance that the starters displayed.  It was as if they knew th [...] Read More »

Terps Beat #18 FSU Handily 77-68

The Terps finally have a big win.  Granted, it was at home and against arguably the worst coach in the ACC; but the Terps are undefeated in the ACC.As a Ravens fan; I'm used to big Terp diasppointments when they share a weekend with a Ravens playoff game.  Not today.  I can't recall the last time my two favorite teams both won huge games on the sam [...] Read More »

Terps Beat Fairfield Convincingly, 72-41

Image via Wikipedia I feel like dancing hence the image. Not all 29 point wins are the same.  For example, 129 - 100 feels a lot closer than 72-41.  Maryland doubled up Fairfield in the second half by continuing to put pressure on the ball and throwing able body after able body at the Stags. As I mentioned in my preview, Fairfield is no Charleston [...] Read More »

10 Things We Learned From Cal v. Maryland

Image by Getty Images via Daylife1.  The O-line is going to struggle all year.Chris Turner had no time to pass. Plain and simple.2.  The Defense is disorganized. How many times did you see Cal receivers running ahead of our CBs?  If the safeties are blitzing and we don't have the CBs to play man-to-man; then the defensive strategy needs to change.  [...] Read More »

Some Post Georgia Tech Perspective

I am reposting my thoughts after the GT game because due to a miscommunication, Gregg posted over top of my comments. Besides, as many have pointed out, the Vasquez issue has been beat to death. This is a nice segue to Miami on Wednesday......At first glance the win against GT felt more like a stay of execution than a victory. A loss would have [...] Read More »

Some Post Georgia Tech Perspective

At first glance the win against GT felt more like a stay of execution than a victory. A loss would have effectively ended the season, and it was discouraging to see the Terps struggle against the worst team in the ACC.However, consider the following:1. MD matches up poorly against the Yellowjackets. GT has a massive frontcourt and MD is well, c [...] Read More »

Terps Cruise 86-58 Over Del. State

The game was over after 10 minutes. That's about all the time it took for Maryland's starters to build a 20 point lead. Unfortunately, the Terps played more or less even with Delaware State the rest of the way until they finally padded the lead in the final five minutes.Greivis Vasquez had a fantastic game. 50% from the floor, 16 points, 8 boards [...] Read More »
