ACC/B1G Challenge: #2 Maryland vs #9 UNC

While the incredible swirl around Maryland's search for a football coach continues, the basketball team heads down to Chapel Hill for a titanic match up with our old rivals, the Tarheels.

It should be a great night.  The Tarheels enter the game as 6-point favorites.  They will welcome back their star point guard, Marcus Paige as well.  He'll be making his first start of the season tonight as he returns from injury.  It's fair to expect some rust but the Terps shouldn't bank on it.  Paige is an exceptional player and UNC will be markedly better with him on the court.

Maryland enters the game with an offensive efficiency rating that is off the charts.  They are shooting a historically great FG% and they continue to be a match up nightmare for any team that chooses play man-to-man defense against them.  I think that is what we should expect from UNC tonight, but I'd expect good 'ol Roy to throw a zone at us if he has trouble guarding us straight up.

Defensively, the Terps have been terrible.  When teams like Cleveland State and Rider are shooting over 45% from the field, something's not right.  Diamond Stone is one of the problems.  He's been a terrible interior defender.  You can't hide a big man defensively so his playing time may get reduced tonight if he can't slow down Kennedy Meeks.  Melo Trimble has also struggled keeping opposing guards in front of him and that could be a problem tonight if Paige is allowed to get into the lane at will.

Maryland can still accomplish all of its season-long goals with a loss tonight but no one wants that.  Games like tonight are why you watch sports.  The environment should be electric and we'll know how things are going based on how many "ACC! ACC!" chants we hear.

Regardless, it will be fun to watch these teams go at it.

Go Terps!

#2 Maryland vs Cleveland State

Of course, the day I forget to put up a football thread is the day that Maryland finally wins a game. Congrats to the seniors for going out with a win. Now the coaching search can begin. I'm praying for Dan Mullen but I'm certainly not banking on it. Now, on to basketball. The Terps have a tune up tonight in preparation for the trip down to Chap [...] Read More »

Terps win Cancun Challenge; Happy Thanksgiving Soupers

Now that's the kind of performance we all knew our Terps are capable of. Is there anything better than going to sleep coming off a performance like that and waking up to the best day of the year (in my humble opinion)? There were a lot of takeaways from last night, and honestly, not all of them were good.  Diamond struggled. He struggled badly. [...] Read More »

#2 Maryland vs Rhode Island (Cancun Championship)

Maryland squeaked by Illinois State last night as the Terps struggled with a game Illinois State Redbirds squad. Maryland fans were not put at ease by the performance.  Outside of the first 5 minutes and the last 5 minutes, the Terps struggled and played even with a good mid major team.  That's not what we expect out of this team. At some point, [...] Read More »

#2 Maryland vs Illinois State (Cancun Day 1)

Coming off last week's less-than-stellar performance against Rider, Maryland should be wary of Illinois State.  Not only are ranked teams dropping like flies, but the Redbirds are in the MVC conference and those teams are giant killers.  Northern Iowa just beat UNC last week. Our Terps are still learning to play together as a team as evidenced b [...] Read More »

Football Gameday: Maryland vs Indiana (And Some Rider Analysis)

The Terps welcome a team of equal ability to College Park today. Let's see if they can get off the schnide and actually win a game.  Indiana has been competitive but there won't be a talent gap on the field like we've seen in every other Big Ten game this season.  This is a game that Maryland can actually win. Now, given the above, we all know t [...] Read More »

#3 Maryland vs Rider

After the heart stopping finish against Georgetwon, Terps fans can relax a little tonight as Rider cruises into town.  Rider is a minnow and the Terps should win by 30+ points. Of greater concern to me and perhaps other Terp fans is what we saw on Tuesday night.  I saw a team with 3 guys 6'11 or taller who got outrebounded and gave up a ton of o [...] Read More »

#3 Maryland vs Georgetown

The Battle for DC. Maryland should be playing Georgetown EVERY YEAR but since we don't, tonight's game is a rare treat on the schedule.  The reasons why this is not an annual game are varied and confusing, but hopefully the paralyzing ice that has frozen this rivalry will thaw with tonight's contest. Maryland is coming off a convincing but ha [...] Read More »

Football Gameday: Maryland vs Michigan State

Our football Terps continue to play out the string today when they travel to East Lansing to take on Michigan State. The Spartans have looked shaky of late but there is no way the Terps leave Spartan Stadium with anything but a loss. I don't care that Maryland has shown life recently. They may hang around for a bit, but they can't win. In other [...] Read More »

Season Opener: # 3Maryland vs Mt. St. Mary's

Tonight is the dawn of the Stone Age at the University of Maryland. Diamond Stone and his highly touted teammates start their journey tonight against minnow, Mt. St. Mary's. There is so much excitement surrounding this team it's hard to put it all in perspective.  The game itself will undoubtedly be a blowout so the real drama is going to be [...] Read More »
