Layman leads Terps past OSU

That was as complete a performance as I have seen from Jake as a Terp. He has played stout defense all year, but this game was the first where I have really seen him take over and get into a groove offensively. I didn't get to watch the Iowa game (I was in a place with no WiFi or TV, in the year 2016!), but from everything I read his defense made the difference. Jake has been labeled as the "scrapper" on this year's team, but today's game showed he is a lot more than that. I think that was the performance we were all waiting for from him. The double-double really doesn't even do his game justice. Let's hope he keeps it up. When he asserts himself offensively, not a lot of defenders have the capability of stopping him. When the Terps needed a big rebound, Jake came up with one. None bigger than when he saved the ball from going out of bounds, drove hard to his right and finished a tough layup through contact.

Overall, this was an ugly game. The Terps started slow, were hitting on all cylinders by the end of the first half, then forget what to do with the ball in the second half. It was a typical ugly Big Ten road game, and the Terps got through it. I wish Turgeon would draw more plays up for Sulaimon to shoot the ball from 3. He has the best percentage on the team (47%) and has unlimited range. Besides that minor gripe, I have nothing else. Turgeon managed a team that was cold from the floor extremely well. He pushed all the right buttons out of timeouts, got the ball in the hands of the right guys and guided the team through a contest that had all the implications of a trap game.

The Iowa win was huge, and the past two wins have the Terps trending in the right direction. The crowd-fueled victory over the Hawkeyes had all the feelings of last year's win over Wisconsin. I don't think recent results validate or invalidate my question about Turgeon. I suppose that question won't be answer until March, but watching Oklahoma have to scrap and fight to beat LSU on the road brought a realization that regular season games on the road when you are a top ranked teams are always uphill battles. I guess the argument is what matters more. The manner of the victory or the victory itself? My question is not if Turgeon can make the Terps a relevant team. My question is if Turgeon can make the Terps and elite team that competes every year for a spot in the Final Four. They've only gotten better under his stewardship, so there really isn't much to complain about.

Up next, a trip to Lincoln to face a Cornhuskers team that likes to push the tempo and force turnovers – a dangerous formula for a Terps team that can be lackadaisical with the ball. We saw that today with Sulaimon's turnover with under a minute to play. This will be another tough road game against a team that can score in bunches but also give up points in droves.

Go Terps.

#8 Maryland vs Ohio State

If you know anything about college basketball and are a fan of the Maryland Terrapins, today's game should terrify you. The Terps won a huge game against the number 3 team in the nation on Thursday night and now must travel to visit a team that they pasted by 35 points a few weeks ago. This is a trap game. Many teams would look past the B [...] Read More »

Can Mark Turgeon get the job done?

I want to start this off by saying I have faith in Mark Turgeon. Maybe less faith than I had two months ago, but faith nonetheless. He took over a once-really good program that had fallen by the wayside on a national scale and made it relevant again. It took three-plus years, but he got his guys, stuck to his guns, and created the culture he wanted [...] Read More »

#8 Maryland vs #3 Iowa

It's hard not to feel a little demoralized after Saturday night's loss. Yes it was a road game against a tough opponent and you can't win them all, but as far as I'm concerned, it's the way we lost that matters more than the final result. The Terps fell short in a predictable fashion. The defensive rebounding was atrocious for the second game [...] Read More »

#5 Maryland vs #11 Michigan State

Maryland travels to Michigan State this evening in what is a colossal tilt when it comes to determining the Terps fortunes this season. Coupled with the midweek game against Iowa, tonight's game with the Spartans will determine if Maryland is indeed a Top 5 team. Simply put, the next two games are the most important ones left on the sched [...] Read More »

#5 Maryland vs Northwestern

The Terps welcome Northwestern to College Park tonight and hope to build on the excellent performance against Ohio State over the weekend. Speaking of which, how about that game? The Terps pasted Ohio State by 35 points and it wasn't even that close.  Watching the game reminded me of watching someone pig-out at a buffet table.  Every option was ava [...] Read More »

Terps maul Ohio State

That headline feels good to write. It's been the opposite (and embarrassing) the past two years I had to give this one a little time to digest; that game showcased what we knew that Terps were capable of offensively the whole year. It was flat out a treat to watch. I think the loss at Michigan fired the guys up; that loss should have never happened [...] Read More »

#3 Maryland vs Ohio State

The Terps look to rebound from their disappointing loss at Michigan on Tuesday. Everyone knows that road games are tough and Michigan is no slouch of an opponent but the loss stung for a couple of reasons.  First, many top 10 teams lost so the Terps could have solidified their status among this year's elite. Perhaps, more disturbing [...] Read More »

#3 Maryland vs Michigan

Maryland continues its road trip tonight in Ann Arbor when the Terps take on a pretty good Wolverines squad.  As last Saturday proved yet again, any road game is going to be very tough.  Wisconsin provided Maryland with all it could handle and if not for Melo Trimble's heroics, would have surely taken us to the limit in overtime.  That said, th [...] Read More »
